Because he was speaking the truth and he is entitled to, without being censored.

I am delighted to see the number of other sports commentators supporting him.

Now lets see Davie resign

Just a few other BBC presenters who’ve aired political opinions (some horrendously offensive)

The 'offensive' tweets were deleted though - has Gary Lineker deleted his tweet?

2018 (example in your link)
Alan Sugar has deleted a tweet depicting Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in a car alongside Adolf Hitler, following calls for him to "disown" it.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell had appealed to the businessman to delete it and "bring people together".

John Mann [former Labour MP] chairman of the all-party group against anti-Semitism, said the use of Nazi comparators was "demeaning, unwarranted and dangerous".

Shadow cabinet minister Jon Trickett called the post "grossly misjudged and deeply offensive".

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43604058

John McDonnell and Jon Trickett are both defending Gary Lineker on Twitter and John Mann has tweeted; ...Gary Lineker is entitled to free speech ( just like say Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear). It’s not difficult.

Viviennemary · 12/03/2023 13:08

Sick to death hearing about him. His ego will be bigger than ever now. BBC being held to ransome by the likes of him. Its a joke.

TooBigForMyBoots · 12/03/2023 13:13

I'm loving it. Heads need to roll in the Tory top brass at the BBC. We do not pay our licence fee for the Tory party to use the BBC as a mouthpiece or to sanction those who disagree with them.

Time for lessons to be learnt.

User1638690 · 12/03/2023 13:24

I'm just loving the whole debacle, couldn't really care about Lineker and his tweets, I wonder how many licence payers they will lose.

Notonthestairs · 12/03/2023 13:28

Did the BBC reprimand Lord Sugar for his tweet featuring a mocked up picture of Corbyn in a car with Hitler? Did they take him off air?

What about this one?

I seriously back @BorisJohnson to be the new PM . The public like him and he will have a good chance of winning the general election in 2021 if not before. Any one who can stop @jeremycorbyn from becoming PM has my backing .

RNIB have pointed out a likely breach of the Equalities Act 2010 for having the shortened MOTD without commentary. Yet another reason why the lack of a plan B should mean the Director General should resign. Local radio commentary could have been used.

How is he holding the BBC to ransom? Do you know what the word means? It means to threaten to keep something unless you're given something. He's not doing that, is he? He's not saying he won't work. He's not threatening to leave. He's not saying 'if you don't let me say what I feel, then I shall do this or that'. In fact, the last thing he said was, 'I'll carry on saying what I feel'. That's it. No threat. No flounce. No refusal to work.

So - again - how's he holding the BBC to ransom?

LlynTegid · 12/03/2023 14:13

If anyone could be accused of holding someone to ransom, it is the government regarding the BBC. Appointing a man who is a mate of Boris Johnson (well even the Krays and Fred West had friends, and they caused less harm), and the threat of no more licence fee or decriminalisation of non-payment.

Eh?

Mortimercat · 12/03/2023 14:13

Eh?

The BBC have used local radio commentary in highlights programmes for the early rounds of the FA Cup. If it was a silent programme, how does anyone with limited sight know when a goal has been scored- cheers may not be an indicator for example.

inky1991 · 12/03/2023 14:23

The idea that the BBC is right-wing is laughable. Accusing the BBC of being right-wing is like accusing the Catholic Church of promoting atheism or The Sun newspaper of being too high brow. The BBC is basically and liberal-left/woke propaganda unit. It’s run by sneering Oxbridge liberals who hate their own country.

Completely agree. Im actually in shock from reading on MN, how deluded people are about this. Like utterly fucking baffled that people think the BBC is right wing. The pendulum for cancel culture has swung the other way for the first time, and people can't handle it. They don't see the irony either which is worrying.

pilates · 12/03/2023 14:24

Apparently I read viewing figures were up for MOTD. Do we really need the pundits? Maybe it’s time to bring in some new fresh ones that probably won’t command such extortionate salaries. He knew what he was signing up for.

inky1991 · 12/03/2023 14:26

BIWI · 11/03/2023 23:28

And I ask again: what is it that the right are prevented from saying?

Are you serious with this question? 🙄

inky1991 · 12/03/2023 14:27

Alan Sugar and Andrew Neil allowed to post the most vile tweets but Gary Lineker taken to task.

Please provide evidence of these "vile" tweets

Notonthestairs · 12/03/2023 14:28

"He knew what he was signing up for."

Find me the bit in his contract that stipulates he has to agree with Government policy.

Given that the left think the BBC is biased to the right and the right think the BBC is biased to the left, I tend to thnk the BBC's doing a fine job of being balanced, overall, assessing the thing as a whole, generally, more or less, having taken a step back, and so on and so forth and what-have-you.

However, what it certainly does tend to do is support the establishment, whoever the establishment happens to be at the time.

Perhaps they did in private. Lord Sugar deleted his tweet. Has Gary Lineker agreed to delete his?

inky1991 · 12/03/2023 14:35

*Or he’s using his position of wealth and influence to actually stand up for people who can’t stand up for themselves.

If you or I call the government out, maybe 10 people will listen. If someone with influence calls them out hundreds of thousands will listen. He’s rich enough already that if the BBC sack him over this he won’t be affected.

Well done Gary for calling out the atrocities our government is pushing through.*

Yeah, multi millionaire Saint Gary pretending he's a socialist and pro distribution of wealth...it's laughable 🙄. It's extremely easy to sit in your west London mansion, advocating popular political opinions when you know the outcome will have no chance in hell of ever affecting you and your elite gated community.

Ah so the BBC didn't comment on Sugar's tweet nor did they refuse to air the programme he leads.
Maybe it happened before Sharp, Gibb or Davie was stationed in the BBC?

Emotionalsupportviper · 12/03/2023 14:37

I can't stand Gary Lineker - but he has every right to voice his opinions, especially on his personal social media.

He isn't whipping people into a frenzy of violence or suggesting anything illegal - he's just saying what he thinks.

He's entitled to do so.

Whoa, hang on - do you think that insisting that you be permitted to 'speak for those without a voice' makes you, by definition, a socialist?

So, to be a tory you must, by definition, not speak for those without a voice.

Suddenly it all makes sense. Thank you.

Ah so the BBC didn't comment on Sugar's tweet

My BBC link is here;
Alan Sugar deletes Corbyn Hitler tweet after backlash
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43604058

So, you would be happy if the BBC ran this headline instead?
Gary Lineker deletes 1930s Germany tweet after backlash

Notonthestairs · 12/03/2023 14:48

So they reported the deletion - no actual request from the BBC to remove it? No taking Sugar off air?
