Because he was speaking the truth and he is entitled to, without being censored.

I am delighted to see the number of other sports commentators supporting him.

Now lets see Davie resign

He has taken in refugees sure. But you can bet your bottom dollar that they would have been carefully screened and selected. Hardly the same thing as selecting a random young man off one of the boats.

I'm sorry but this is risible.

How many people took any of the refugees? Are you really trying to find ways to say that what he did wasn't a good thing?!

Yes he's a multimillionaire. Good for him. Yes he lives very differently from the majority of us. How many of us, in the majority, took in a refugee? Did you?

the whole right wing top brass at the Beeb should go. People have asked on Twitter that GL had tweeted in support of the Bill would he be sanctioned like this? Absolutely not. So much for impartiality BS.

The idea that the BBC is right-wing is laughable. Accusing the BBC of being right-wing is like accusing the Catholic Church of promoting atheism or The Sun newspaper of being too high brow. The BBC is basically and liberal-left/woke propaganda unit. It’s run by sneering Oxbridge liberals who hate their own country.

But how can anyone take him seriously when he is so far removed from the reality. He has taken in refugees sure. But you can bet your bottom dollar that they would have been carefully screened and selected. Hardly the same thing as selecting a random young man off one of the boats.
That is what is getting peoples backs up. Being preached to by a multi millionaire who lives very differently to the vast majority of us.

Doesn’t matter.

For one, your views do not represent the public at large, the majority of whom support Lineker (per today’s polling).

But, more importantly, the BBC has consistently allowed its sports and entertainment presenters to express political opinions.

Now, with the organization stacked with Tory donors and supporters, they are sanctioning Lineker for expressing views critical of the government.

They would not have suspended him for praising the government.

They have, for years (including after the 2020 rule changes) permitted presenters to air political views.

We cannot have a state-funded Government mouthpiece - that is the antithesis of what the BBC ought to be.

Not long ago I was an ardent defender of the license fee (and paid it even though I didn’t strictly need to). I will not be paying it again absent a return to impartiality.

It’s really not.
Tim Davie and Richard Sharp are both prominent, long term supporters of the Conservative Party.

TheLostNights · 11/03/2023 23:18

Sorry but there are other polls which completely show the opposite view so I'm not buying that everyone bar a small minority is 'for' this.
It seems that only people on the left can be heard where as the people who show concerns are screamed at for being racist or 'far right.'
We do not have free speech in this country I agree. But it's in favour of the left. They are allowed to say what they want, others with a different opinion get shouted down.
The point about the refugee is that it isn't the same as just randomly selecting one young man who may for example be a criminal. It changes things a lot. Would I take one on? No. I don't pretend that opening up our borders to mostly young men is a positive thing. If I did agree then I would be taking them in. But I don't.

babybythesea · 11/03/2023 23:19

Icedlatteplease · 11/03/2023 22:03

Nope.

I'll defend GL right to say what he wants but not to say whatever he wants and work at the BBC.

Freedom of speech does not mean Freedom from responsibility

Why didn’t that also pertain to Lord Sugar who used an article in the Sun to tell people to vote Tory? Blatantly partial, but he kept his job at the BBC. Or is it only if the criticism is against the party in power that you are punished for it?

BIWI · 11/03/2023 23:20

What is it that the right is prevented from saying?

TheCrowFromBelow · 11/03/2023 23:20

Oh just seen your second post.
the criminals are the ones selling the places in the boats.
id have more respect for our government if they looked like they were seriously tackling them, but they aren’t.

Yeah because our multi-billionaire Prime Minister is so much more relatable.😆

TheLostNights · 11/03/2023 23:22

People are called 'far right ' for expressing concerns. It's a way of shutting down a healthy debate. You can't express any negative thoughts about this without being told how awful you are as a person. How heartless and cruel you are etc.

babybythesea · 11/03/2023 23:23

TheLostNights · 11/03/2023 22:39

He is certainly no saint. Is actually crazy how he is being made into one. Had no qualms about being paid for going to Qatar, is a tax dodger and does not live in the real world. He doesn't have to live amongst the problems that many are experiencing when living near migrant hotels for example.

Whether that is true or not isn’t the point though. Is he allowed to hold certain views or not? If not, why aren’t others also held to account for their political views? Alan Sugar bring the obvious one. Or is it only anti-Tory views that are not acceptable? Pro-Tory views -crack right on. Where does that end?
That famous quote is seriously relevant here. I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Whatever you think of Lineker isn’t the point.

Happens the other way too though. Lefty liberal, bleeding hearts, woolly thinking.
Or the tofu eating, guardian reading wokerati.
I’m not saying labels aren’t thrown by the left but they are thrown out by the right too, which means any debate is high on impossible.

theysaiditgetseasier · 11/03/2023 23:26

I hope he is sent off for good now, he is so far left it's embarrassing, he is a complete prat without a clue.

Do you ever watch MOTD? he does a very good job.

TheLostNights · 11/03/2023 23:30

That they have concerns and that not all migrants have the best intentions. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been shouted down for this or called 'far right'.

Nuts isn’t it. There are right wing newspapers and tv channels (which make up the bulk of the UK’s press) seemingly dedicated to telling us that right wing people are being silenced.

TheLostNights · 11/03/2023 23:33

I disagree. The media is heavily left focused.

Oh yeah, right, @JoonT, we believe you.🙄

Alan Sugar and Andrew Neil allowed to post the most vile tweets but Gary Lineker taken to task.

Twinstudy · 11/03/2023 23:38

All this 'ooh I don't like him, he's too rich/champagne socialist/said something I don't like/eats the wrong crisps' whatever is all completely irrelevant and totally undermines your argument. The point is he's allowed to air his views or he's not, and if he's not then how come others are? You can't have the likes of Alan Sugar or Andrew Neil promoting pro Tory views and not allow lineker his opposing view.

Can you seriously tell me that if he'd tweeted in support of 'Ban the boats' he'd have been in trouble? Can people really not see how scary it is that the BBC is being censored by the government ? And does state censoring of media really not ring any bells of certain times in history? We're supposed to learn from history FFS.

The Daily Mail.

The Express.

Our media is mostly right wing.

TheLostNights · 11/03/2023 23:33

I disagree. The media is heavily left focused.

That, objectively, isn’t true though.

Just under 75% of all national newspapers are controlled by Conservative-supporting billionaires.

And now Conservative supporters run the BBC too.

Shulk · 11/03/2023 23:47

The only reason some people believe the media has a left wing bias is because that’s what the majority of the media (all owned by right wing billionaires) tells them.
