Because he was speaking the truth and he is entitled to, without being censored.

I am delighted to see the number of other sports commentators supporting him.

Now lets see Davie resign

He is vurtue signalling at its worst. Completely insulated from the problems. Tweeting only views that will be popular. Not standing up for difficult issues . Happy to take money wherever he can get it.

Saint Gary of Lineker has been warned before about his social media use. In the real world people get sacked for what they post on personal SM accounts

Gary Lineker earns £1.35m for hosting a once a week show

Gary Lineker is embroiled in a case with the HMRC over £4.9m tax they say he owes

Just thought it was worth reminding people that he would normally be castigated on MN

The comments on social media make you realise how irrational and, frankly, insane some left-wing people are. I have seen several posts calling for total freedom of movement (in other words, open borders)!!

Just think about that for a moment. Imagine what that would really mean. This is a small, crowded island. I live on a new build estate in a sea of ghastly houses, where the traffic so bad I hardly go out. Our population is about 65 million (probably closer to 70 million when you add illegal immigrants). Do left-wing people feel there ought to be a limit? I’m curious. Would 100 million be too many people? How about 200 million? Should we just concrete over the entire green belt and cut down every tree? Would they be happy then?

Africa has the highest birth rate in the world. In fact, its birth rate is so high the population is going to double by 2050. Imagine a billion poor Africans free to move to the U.K. Imagine the utter chaos. I genuinely believe some left wing people (the Corbyn brothers for example) are insane - as mad as religious fundamentalists.

And these people who want open borders...do they never consider that maybe, just maybe, not everyone who comes is a good person. What about someone who has fled his home country after raping or murdering someone? Would you want him living next door? What about a pimp or a drug dealer? What about a violent, rootless drifter? People are so keen to appear liberal and cool that they stop thinking.

Notonthestairs · 12/03/2023 09:22

BBC impartiality

I seriously back @BorisJohnson to be the new PM . The public like him and he will have a good chance of winning the general election in 2021 if not before. Any one who can stop @jeremycorbyn from becoming PM has my backing .

You wont get many people commenting on this, its too inconvenient.

devildeepbluesea · 12/03/2023 09:23

So, so far we have had:

”He’s rich and doesn’t live the same life as us, therefore he shouldn’t voice his opinion.”

”The press are all left-wing anyway, us poor rigt-wingers aren’t allowed to say anything (good lord, where to even start with this)

”He was bound by their editorial guidelines” (no, he would have been on what the BBC call a Talent contract, completely separate from news contracts and without the requirement to conform with editorial policy)

So far none of the Tory apologists have been able to explain why it’s ok for Sugar to voice his pro-Tory opinion, but Lineker can’t voice the opposite.

Tells you everything you need to know.

Isitsixoclockalready · 12/03/2023 09:24

For anyone who understands exactly what was written (rather than the faux outrage over what he Lineker didn't actually write) and can see straight through all this Tory driven 'impartiality' bollocks - this video is bang on:

Twinstudy · 12/03/2023 09:25

you think there are 5 million illegal immigrants in the UK?!

toomuchlaundry · 12/03/2023 09:26

And whilst we are arguing whether GL could tweet what he did and are the BBC right, the Government carry on doing what they do

Africa also has the lowest life expectancy. Go figure……….

This thread shows peoples differing views. It's frightening. How some bring in irrelevant arguments into the equation. I don't like xxx flavoured crisps. So that means he's wrong. Errr..... Hmm

@JoonT have you actually looked to see who is on the board of the bbc now? Or are you just trotting out lazy outdated clichés?

The BBC needs to clear house.

Its upper echelons are stacked with Tory donors and supporters and they have now demonstrated a complete inability to be impartial.

Their actions towards Lineker, given their inactions towards others, are entirely indefensible by any honest-minded person.

As has been pointed out (even by a BBC journalist), zero action would have been taken if he expressed agreement with Braverman.

This, I agree. The whole thing stinks.

Clavinova · 12/03/2023 09:46

Notonthestairs
BBC interviewer: "If Gary Lineker had said to Suella Braverman, 'I support your migrant policy. I back it. It is brilliant.' Would you have removed him from air for that?"
BBC Director General Tim Davie: "I'm not going to get into hypotheticals..."

But surely, a more equivalent hypothetical would be along the lines of;

"If Gary Lineker had said to Suella Braverman, 'I support your migrant policy. We need to take our cue from 1930s Germany.' Would you have removed him from air for that?"

I can guarantee that Gary Lineker would have been removed from air for a tweet like that.

@Nimbostratus100

*Ordinary plebs like the rest of us a require by our contracts to not use social media to slander your employer.

So why is GL any different?*

Whoa, hang on. He didn't slander his employer. His employer is the BBC. Well, actually - no. Because he's freelance. But he invoices the BBC from time to time.

Oh, no! Wait! I see! You think the government is his employer. That could only be the caaw if the BBC is run by the government. Well, yes, we all suspect that might be the case. That's the problem then, isn't it?

Or is that you think that you - as license payer - are his employer? In which case, how did he slander you?

I dont know why you tagged me, I said exactly what you said

If he wants to be a politician, be one. If he wants to be a sports presenter, then present sports.

so are sports presenters not allowed to have political views?

OP posts:
EngTech · 12/03/2023 09:48

@JoonT I agree with that

We are spending £4 to 6M a day on housing illegal immigrants, I.e. UK Tax Payer

The GL story has now expanded somewhat but what is the actual root cause of the story?

Illegal immigration and it is out of control so needs sorting out

GL has a right to say what he says, he is paid for by the BBC who get the money from the TV licence payers

The people who pay their TV license have a right to their say as well

Must get more popcorn in as it might turn into an upcoming discussion in May this year 😳

Nimbostratus100 · 12/03/2023 09:50

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 12/03/2023 09:16

GL has gotten too big for his boots. As a BBC presenter he has to remain impartial- but chose to open his mouth. Therefore must take the consequences.

no he doesn't have to remain impartial, he is a sports presenter - it is only political /news/current affairs presenters that have to remain impartial

How is it "virtue signalling" to host refugees and care for them in his own home, support them and advocate for them?

What have you done for refugees?

You could be a refugee in a few years time. Do you think no body should care about you in case they are labelled "virtue signallers"?

@EngTech maybe the Government should sort out the processing system so we don’t need to house so many people in hotels
