Yet another parking one (includes cone rage!)

We live in a road of terraced houses, barely anyone has a drive -maybe 1 in 25 if they are end terrace and have a slightly larger plot. It’s survival of the fittest and most people accept that. A few months ago some people moved in a few doors down with a very long wide truck. Initially l think they’re super super lucky and always get a parking spot. I then spot them ear mark a spot with a number of cones and don’t take their chances like everyone else. I’ve been giving the vehicle side eye for weeks.

I get back from somewhere late last night and it’s our turn now! It’s been parked outside our house all last night and today. Theyve gone out for the evening and left the cones to reserve “their spot”. Problem is it’s not. It’s a fairly busy road and other people want to park there. I think it’s highly entitled and rude -especially as they don’t do it outside their house.

Options as l see it see it:

  1. remove the cones

  2. remove the cones and put our car in their place

  3. suck it up. The man needs to put his big important man van somewhere, he can’t be expected to take his chances like everyone else on the road

  4. “assess” the situation for a period of time

Husband wants to do #4. Handy for him as he’s not heavily pregnant and didn’t have to walk 300 metres from the other end of the road like l did last night.

If they wants permanent parking for this large vehicle (it’s always partly in the pavement as well) he needs to live in a detached house, semi-detached house or hire a parking space / garage surely?

What are everyone’s thoughts?

#2. DO IT! You all pay road tax, and are entitled to park in any spot on the road.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/03/2023 21:10

I'd be in favour of moving the cones.

The only hesitation I'd have is how much interaction you are likely to have / how friendly do you want to be?

Pipersouth · 10/03/2023 21:10

Option 2 definitely just put them outside their door- they have no right to do that!

SleepingisanArt · 10/03/2023 21:12

Don't you have to have a oermit to put cones on a public highway?

SleepingisanArt · 10/03/2023 21:12

Permit!!

Okunevo · 10/03/2023 21:12
  1. If no other parking, otherwise I'd leave it for the person who needs the parking to move the cones

Someone tried this on our road, which was strange as there’s nearly always loads of room. About 8 different car moved the cones and parked there over a few days, the cones then spent a few days forlorn on the curb and then disappeared.

I didn’t know that. But l googled it and you are correct: www.staffordshire.gov.uk/Highways/Parking-and-enforcement/FAQs/003.aspx

I'd take the cones and 'tidy' them up in a random layby miles away. Entitled prick.

BowiesJumper · 10/03/2023 21:17

I’d deffo move the cones! And if he’s always half up on the pavement and blocking it, report him to the council parking dept and he might get a ticket.

Happened on our road! (I wasn’t the reporter or the driver!)

Unananana · 10/03/2023 21:18

Its a no brainer. Move the cones. He has no right to put them there without a permit.

My neighbour over the road tried this shite. His cones went....missing. I used to move them and park there just to make a point. But I am a dick.

That’s what’s putting me off. I don’t want neighbour aggro but l feel they are taking the piss big time and they are clearly rather entitled with the way they go about things!

Ahh this reminds me of the TV series Bread.
🤣

Sorry OP, that wasn’t helpful was it? 😳

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 10/03/2023 21:18

Go for number 1 or 2. Number 2 is what our plumber did, when next door attempted to cone a space outside our house. Neighbour attempted to complain and I told them it was a road available for anyone taxed, insured and mot’ed to park on and I wasn’t about to start play kindergarten games. No more cones have been deployed in the entire street.
(Since discovered that neighbours car is neither insured or mot’ed)

Foundryside · 10/03/2023 21:18

I think they’d need a permit to legally put the cones on the road.

So I wouldn’t see a problem with moving the cones off the road.

This! Leaving them on their doorstep makes more of a point than throwing them away

Violetcrush · 10/03/2023 21:19

#2 cheeky feckers!!

StClare101 · 10/03/2023 21:19

I’d remove the cones and let someone else park there. I would keep removing the cones every single time.

Disagree - you are not a dick. But your neighbour is!

@Notparticularlyslappable l was moaning to my husband about his game the other day. I did threaten to flame thrower them if he tried it outside our house 😉. So moving then if quite mild versus what l would really like to do…

I would put the cones in the boot of my car then park my car in the space.

Efficient combination of 2 options. I like!
