Yet another parking one (includes cone rage!)

We live in a road of terraced houses, barely anyone has a drive -maybe 1 in 25 if they are end terrace and have a slightly larger plot. It’s survival of the fittest and most people accept that. A few months ago some people moved in a few doors down with a very long wide truck. Initially l think they’re super super lucky and always get a parking spot. I then spot them ear mark a spot with a number of cones and don’t take their chances like everyone else. I’ve been giving the vehicle side eye for weeks.

I get back from somewhere late last night and it’s our turn now! It’s been parked outside our house all last night and today. Theyve gone out for the evening and left the cones to reserve “their spot”. Problem is it’s not. It’s a fairly busy road and other people want to park there. I think it’s highly entitled and rude -especially as they don’t do it outside their house.

Options as l see it see it:

  1. remove the cones

  2. remove the cones and put our car in their place

  3. suck it up. The man needs to put his big important man van somewhere, he can’t be expected to take his chances like everyone else on the road

  4. “assess” the situation for a period of time

Husband wants to do #4. Handy for him as he’s not heavily pregnant and didn’t have to walk 300 metres from the other end of the road like l did last night.

If they wants permanent parking for this large vehicle (it’s always partly in the pavement as well) he needs to live in a detached house, semi-detached house or hire a parking space / garage surely?

What are everyone’s thoughts?

I've moved neighbours cones before. They were one of 2 houses on our old street who had parking on a driveway. They were having building work done, put cones out, moved their cars to just outside the cone zone and then the builders van went behind. So basically blocked most of the street.

It was a nice understanding street generally and everyone respected people parking outside their houses. The cones were blocking the parking outside my house and I had lots of shopping to bring in. I got out and moved them. Builder came out and awkwardly asked me to move my car. Neighbours head was bobbing about in the window.

I politely told him that she could come and move her car and I'd park in that spot, otherwise I'm staying put as I've got shopping to bring in and I'm not driving around to hunt for a space on another street, which she clearly didn't want to do either.

My car stayed where it was and I never heard a peep from her. People are weird.

Definitely move the cones. They probably knew when they started doing it they were being cheeky and might not get away with it. You can’t reserve public on street parking

donquixotedelamancha · 10/03/2023 22:09
  1. Obviously. Why on earth would you let someone reserve the spot outside your house with cones? You'd have to be a complete mug.
Keeween · 10/03/2023 22:12

Fuck the fucking cones! I’d be stacking them and chucking them into his front garden. Take the space back, UP THE REVOLUTION

HoobleDooble · 10/03/2023 22:24

Start as you mean to go on and nip this behaviour in the bud before they think it's ok, move the cones and mirror the amount of consideration they're showing you.

igor · 10/03/2023 22:36

I'd park in the space then put one of the cones back in position on top of my car

pictoosh · 10/03/2023 22:46

We had a neighbour (he’s gone now thank god) who did something similar. I just moved the cones to the pavement outside his house and parked. Twice. The cones never made a reappearance.

iolaus · 10/03/2023 22:48

The only time I've seen one of my neighbours put cones out is on the day of a funeral when the hearse is coming to the house - and even then they knocked and told everyone

Sure it's annoying when you can't park near your house but thats part of living in terraced housing (it really bugs me when people park in a way where there are lots of not quite a car space between them so you loose several spaces.

I'd move the cones if this is a regular thing

Wait2see2 · 10/03/2023 22:49

Don't worry about what these CF neighbours think all your other neighbours will think you are a hero. Move them, park there and leave a note telling them they cannot reserve a parking spot. They won't do it again and if they do get your own cones.
What massive prices.

Wait2see2 · 10/03/2023 22:49

*pricks not prices

EsmeSusanOgg · 10/03/2023 22:51

I don't mind people marking a space on occasion (for example you have a slip coming) but constantly coning off spaces so no one else can park is not on.

That said, I wish someone would mark bays on our road. Parking is tight, but it would be better if people knew how to park. Marked bays would at least shame the worst culprits (hopefully) into not taking up two spaces!

OP, YANBU.

XanaduKira · 10/03/2023 22:54

So what have you done Op?

Inkblue · 10/03/2023 23:02

Move the cones and put your car there.

gazpachosoupday · 10/03/2023 23:03

Take them sell them on ebay as stag and hen do toys, save them nicking them

MrsCarson · 10/03/2023 23:05

number 2 and stack the cone neatly on a different street.

Custardbanana · 10/03/2023 23:09

Move the cones. I used to have a neighbour that tried to pull this stunt with his wheelie bin and I moved it every single time and parked my car.

Teatime55 · 10/03/2023 23:13

Move and park. I’d also dump them one street away, every time.

MajorCarolDanvers · 10/03/2023 23:23

@EL8888

What was the outcome?

notnowdennis · 10/03/2023 23:28

I was a very civic minded individual on one occasion. And returned the Water company’s “lost” cones to them. I thought it was terrible they had been left behind getting in people’s way! 😉

80sMum · 10/03/2023 23:44

RausageSoul · 10/03/2023 21:25

I'd attach them to my roof Grin

🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for making me chuckle!

Monstermoomoo · 10/03/2023 23:47

Ugh, our neighbour also does this. Pisses me off so much! They used to have two cars though and that was worse as they'd park one across two spaces until the other driver was home at which point they'd move the first car and park the second right behind it. Every. Single. Day. If anyone dares park in "his" space he shouts at them. So I guess I should be grateful we're just dealing with cones now... I'm always so tempted to report them but I'm pretty sure one of them now has cancer, so don't really want to upset them 🙈 To be clear though, this BS started way before either one of them got sick.

They're not even my most annoying neighbours though - another neighbour has six vehicles parked on the street (another two on their drive) and yet another neighbour owns a car dealership of some sort run from his house... Always find his cars parked all over the place too, usually right across dropped kerbs, half on the pavement.

Sorry, this turned into quite a venting session. It's been building to a while.

EL8888 · 10/03/2023 23:50

I moved the cones out of way. Loved the suggestions especially Madonna and Dinosaur but heavily pregnant me is quite waddly and swollen. My ankles are especially bad

Husband is peeved but hey ho. He said if they come knocking, he’s going to direct them in the direction of “his heavily pregnant, angry, hormonal wife”. I think the cones outside meant it was on?! I don’t want to war with the neighbours but lm not tolerating their entitled obnoxiousness. I nearly moved the cones the other week when l got back from somewhere

EL8888 · 10/03/2023 23:52

@Monstermoomoo do you live on our old road?! Our next door but 3 neighbour had 6 cars but no driveway. How can anyone need that many cars?!

Running a car dealership from the house?! What fresh hell is that?

EL8888 · 11/03/2023 00:08

PS just noticed small car has parked in the spot at 1 end. Sadly too tired and in pyjamas to moved cones back around it!

Report the cones as fly tipping
