Yet another parking one (includes cone rage!)

We live in a road of terraced houses, barely anyone has a drive -maybe 1 in 25 if they are end terrace and have a slightly larger plot. It’s survival of the fittest and most people accept that. A few months ago some people moved in a few doors down with a very long wide truck. Initially l think they’re super super lucky and always get a parking spot. I then spot them ear mark a spot with a number of cones and don’t take their chances like everyone else. I’ve been giving the vehicle side eye for weeks.

I get back from somewhere late last night and it’s our turn now! It’s been parked outside our house all last night and today. Theyve gone out for the evening and left the cones to reserve “their spot”. Problem is it’s not. It’s a fairly busy road and other people want to park there. I think it’s highly entitled and rude -especially as they don’t do it outside their house.

Options as l see it see it:

  1. remove the cones

  2. remove the cones and put our car in their place

  3. suck it up. The man needs to put his big important man van somewhere, he can’t be expected to take his chances like everyone else on the road

  4. “assess” the situation for a period of time

Husband wants to do #4. Handy for him as he’s not heavily pregnant and didn’t have to walk 300 metres from the other end of the road like l did last night.

If they wants permanent parking for this large vehicle (it’s always partly in the pavement as well) he needs to live in a detached house, semi-detached house or hire a parking space / garage surely?

What are everyone’s thoughts?

Unless they've got a video doorbell

The cones are outside the OPs house not the truck owner house.

If cones were on my street I would tut quietly, but if someone reserved the spot outside my own house, even I would move those cones.

Flavabobble · 11/03/2023 13:11

The only appropriate thing to do is:
Lift the cones,
park there,
place cones on roof of car.

I'd take the cones and 'tidy' them up in a random layby miles away. Entitled prick.

I wouldn't encourage fly tipping. The problem is rife and cost hundreds of thousands of tax payers money every year to tackle

RattlewhenIwalk · 11/03/2023 13:23

2 for sure 😁

Geranium1984 · 11/03/2023 13:31

Do you know any others on the street.
I'd go for #2 but will work well if others in the street were also in on your side - which I imagine they would be.
Do you have a street whatsapp group?

Pseudonamed · 11/03/2023 13:39

Defo 2. Done it before. Hate cheeky fuckery.

SacreBlue · 11/03/2023 13:40

When I moved into present house my neighbours gifted me a handmade free-standing bollard/cone hybrid.

Everyone in our street has one 🤣

OP are you sure your neighbour hasn’t seen your struggles and is in fact gifting you the cones?

BadlydoneHelen · 11/03/2023 13:47

Write 'wanker' on every cone in permanent marker then tidy them up to the pavement outside their house.

2chocolateoranges · 11/03/2023 15:47

moonpixel · 10/03/2023 21:20

I would put the cones in the boot of my car then park my car in the space.

I’d do the same, then deposit the cones elsewhere.

cheeky bastard trying to reserve a space.

EL8888 · 11/03/2023 15:48

UPDATE: when l got up cones remained tucked round the corner by an alleyway where l left them last night. Small car still in original ear marked space outside my house. Important big man van no where to be seen

I popped out for a couple of hours to do some errands. While l was out Important big man van has re-appeared further up the road, over-hanging a garage by about a foot. Cones have vanished. So they don’t appear to have got the message. Watch this space, like l said last night it’s on. We need to keep a lower threshold for this bull shit

@Geranium1984 we know the immediate neighbours on each side and we are friendly but that’s it. There isn’t a street WhatsApp group we are aware of? But we’ve only been here about 18 months

Oh, this is even better.

Yes keep doing this. Just remove them and do what another poster said... drop them off at nearby Road works

I’m quite relentless and stubborn. It also doesn’t hurt the nearest roadworks are about half a mile away so l can drop them off there, when they next get wheeled out again (probably tonight or tomorrow lm guessing)

I can guarantee if you were a man and spoke to him about it, he wouldn't be taking the piss. I have a similar neighbour. Keep at him!

Geranium1984 · 11/03/2023 18:08

Looking forward to an update 🙏

I would print off the page from the council about cones not being legal (the link in a pp) several times and roll them up and stick one in the top hole of every cone.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 12/03/2023 20:35

@Tinysoxxx i like your thinking! I was wondering about planting up the cones as a community garden..

girlfriend44 · 12/03/2023 20:51

Get a few of you to speak to him and tell him you can't reserve a space.

MeridianB · 12/03/2023 20:57

Do you mean a truck like one of Ford Ranger type things or a massive thing that would restock the lock Waitrose?

Anyway, you did the right thing - keep moving the cones. They are being ridiculous.

Immychops · 12/03/2023 21:10

Can you imagine if everyone did that?
They have no right to use cones to reserve a spot. You were right to move them.

@MeridianB kind of in between, it’s like a rather long flat bed van? Takes up about 1.5 parking spots length ways and he has to park on the pavement so vehicles can get past

Exactly. Imagine if the whole road did it? Heavily pregnant me with very swollen legs, who is still working full time doesn’t do it so why should he?

ANOTHER UPDATE

I came back the other evening to find no parking, his spot marked with cones and the vehicle gone. I moved the cones and put my car in the space (too tired to haul them into the car). Next day l find a note under my windscreen wiper. Forbidding me from moving the cones from outside his house and informing me he doesn’t wish to look for parking when he gets home at 5am 😵‍💫 Not sure where to start with a reply to that!

-He doesn’t do it just outside his house! I woke up this morning to see it outside a totally different house again. Plus no one owns the space on the road outside their house on this road
-He doesn’t have a permit for the cones so shouldn’t be using them
-Until pregnancy l regularly did night shifts, got home after 8am (getting back at 5am is an early finish!). I put on my big girl pants by finding a parking spot, walking back to my house and then going to bed

@EL8888 contact your local councillor. A properly worded letter shoutout this bully
back on his hole. (Our councillor is extremely hot on parking problems and fly tipping hopefully your is too).
