To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

You’re wrong. Most people support him - check out the proportion voting yanbu here and the comments on twitter

To be fair, I don't think a handful of people on MN and the threads you personally read on twitter are necessarily representative of national opinion. 🤔

@Moonicorn Love that you can write a thousand words blaming the left for men being physically strong enough to do a journey that’s too dangerous for women and children to do, but can’t lift a finger to google what a safe route could be. 😁

Ukraine scheme sound familiar? Visas & biometrics were processed overseas in Ukraine or other European countries, so people eligible for the visa could then fly directly to the UK. Meaning women and children could safely make the journey.

Interestingly, no one criticises Ukrainian refugees for travelling through multiple safe countries to get to the UK. I don’t know a single Ukrainian refugee who flew directly from Ukraine (I’m guessing it would have been too dangerous with Russian troops approaching Kyiv). They went through Poland. Germany. Slovakia. Czechia. Hungary. France. As was their right.

No because weirdly a lot of people are okay with refugees, when they’re women and children, and not at all xenophobic. Strange isn’t it? Like we’re actually quite a caring country we just don’t want unchecked men from patriarchal cultures to enter the country as a ‘right’.

As for ‘safe routes’:

By ‘safe and legal’ route, we mean the formal sanction by the UK of journeys to the UK – e.g. where a visa is granted or available for the journey or the person is permitted to travel to the UK without a visa. A journey under any other circumstances is not by a safe and legal route. However, this does not mean the journey is either unlawful or unsafe, though its being made in circumstances that are not formally sanctioned gives rise to significant risks of exploitation, abuse and other harm. As regards lawfulness of journeys that are not by safe and legal routes, we note there is no requirement in international law that a claim for asylum be made in any particular country and a refugee may legitimately cross multiple borders in order to reach the place where she, he or they seek asylum

So - do explain if I’ve misunderstood - the proposed ‘safe route’ is giving a British visa to anyone who asks for one, for any reason, as long as they claim to be a refugee?

If they were would they Tories be in government? 😆

Vanderlayinfustries · 11/03/2023 01:20

You've right. He compared their language to that it 1930s Germany and he was correct.

Now he's been shut down for itm just as 1930s Germany would do.

The language and actions of 1930s Germany left to the rise of the Nazis and the atrocities commited in the second world war 1939-45.

Some lie Lineker likened the gov to WWII Nazis. He didn't. He said 1939s Germany. He's rigjt. The silencing proved him right.

@Moonicorn How do you propose women and child asylum seekers claim asylum in the UK?

Things have changed a lot in the last three years. Labour is steaming ahead in the polls and has been for months. This debacle will undoubtedly add a few more points to its lead.

In which case we’re not the ‘very right wing country’ that everyone keeps claiming we are?

BewareTheLibrarians · 11/03/2023 01:22

@Moonicorn No, it’s not “giving a British visa to anyone who asks for one, for any reason, as long as they claim to be a refugee”

Their claim is assessed and decided to be valid or not before they come to the UK. As I explained in my previous post.

MarshaMelrose · 11/03/2023 01:23

Can I just say, @BigRed98 , there might be somewhere in the heart of your many tweets an argument that could be addressed seriously. But you really aren't doing yourself any favours with your comments on rape and your LD relationship with a feminine woman and your talk of slags.
Why don't you go back to base and address your core reason of why this refugee policy isn't wrong? I'm up for listening to arguments that are different from mine, but I think yours are maybe going off topic and getting more extreme than you mean them.

@Moonicorn How do you propose women and child asylum seekers claim asylum in the UK?

My proposal are for collection points to be set up just outside of the countries of concern, primarily Afghanistan. That way women and children don’t have to make such long journeys across Europe. We would give proper information about what support they can expect here, and they could make an informed decision about whether they want to apply. If they do, their claims would be processed quickly and they would be brought here 🤷🏼‍♀️

I really do not think it will. It's stuff like this that loses elections for Labour.

They can do that now. So why don’t they?

Vanderlayinfustries · 11/03/2023 01:28

@moo
Safe routes mean genuine refugees fleeing a vulnerable situation, war or persecution can apply for permission to seek asylum here from abroad.

Safely. Without crossing the channel in a boat.

The gov removed this option so now refugees have to cross the channel in a boat to seek asylum.

They have no other other choice unless from Ukraine

The gov created the small boats situation by ending safe routes. To anger and divide people about small boats.

Now they're waging a war they know they can't wait. Because it breaks all international laws.

So they can face the next election on an argument of Tories Vs small.bosts and leftie lawyers and nasty foreigners

And small minded people fall for it

Bunnyfuller · 11/03/2023 01:28

This is what GL was talking about. It happened in Germany in the 1930s, leading up to the war. It’s the slow and sinister creep of the acceptance of treating other humans like animals, and worse.

Florenz · 11/03/2023 01:31

"They have no other other choice". What does this even mean? There aren't any number of countries they could seek asylum? They have no other choice than to risk their lives crossing the channel in a small boat to get to the UK, instead of seeking asylum in any country they pass through to get there?

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 11/03/2023 01:31
