To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

1000 replies

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

@lollipoprainbow @Suzi888

if a woman supports open borders and then is getting raped by a man who just so happens to be an immigrant then why should I or any western man protect her?

How disgusting that you say 'well said' to this and the other even clarified they agreed with 'all of it' so can't even pretend they didn't mean this bit.

Shameful.

You should be absolutely fucking ashamed of yourself for thinking, let alone saying, this.

It's one of the worst things I've read on here.

JFC.

That's the Right for you @monsteramunch. They despise women.

There's two of us anyway.

I wonder if Football Focus or Final Score will be broadcast?

Si much respect for them standing up for their beliefs. What has happened to the BBC ...nothing to do with the massive Tory chairman taking over?

Soapnutty · 11/03/2023 00:04

Agree OP, I applaud them.

Why not take a step into the unknown and do away with it all? A springtime rest, if you will. 🐣

And we are free to turn them back.

Which refugees does Gary Lineker agree we can turn away? No doubt he would say that the government are "cruel" for turning ANYONE away who wants to come here. And they should all be given free homes, generous benefits anyone who has a problem with this is basically a Nazi?

This is all egregious nonsense, as always. Firstly, we’re not “free to turn them back” for a couple of legal reasons. Non-refoulment being one, lack of agreement with EU countries being another.

Asylum seekers aren’t given “free homes” in the way that you’re insinuating. They’re housed in detention centres or mostly-inadequate hotels. The “generous benefits” you allude to are £8 a week if housed in a hotel, or £40 a week if housed elsewhere.

Pretty disgusting to lie to turn people against asylum seekers.

He has literally actually done this very thing.

Florenz · 10/03/2023 23:21

Rubbish. We are a small country, densely populated. We are also a democracy. Put it to a referendum if there's any confusion.

If Gary Lineker worked for a commercial broadcaster, he could say what he wanted and it'd be up to his employer to deal with. He works for the BBC. WE are his employers. So people absolutely have a right to disagree with him and make their feelings known.

The BBC needs to go away. People are always going to disagree with a broadcaster that they are forced to pay for.

You don't have to pay for a tv licence. In doing so you agree not to watch any bbc output.

If we accept the impartiality clause applies to a freelancer (dubious but let’s pretend it does) - where has been the reprimands before?

Gary Lineker and Twitter October 2022
Complaint
In response to the then-Foreign Secretary’s call for English football league teams to boycott the Champions League final in Russia in the event of qualifying, Mr Lineker tweeted: “And her party will hand back their donations from Russian donors?”.
A reader of the tweet questioned whether it was consistent with the BBC’s requirements in relation to impartiality.

The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of impartiality and the Guidance on the use of social media by people working for the BBC.

Outcome
Mr Lineker is one of the BBC’s highest profile stars and, although he does not work exclusively for the BBC, is perhaps best known for presenting Match of the Day on BBC One.

In the ECU’s judgement Mr Lineker, though not involved in BBC journalism, therefore falls into the category of those for whom there is an “additional responsibility” as set out in the Guidance....

at a time when relations between the UK and Russia were the subject of significant public debate...

we found the tweet was in breach of the relevant Guidance and did not meet the BBC’s editorial standards on impartiality.

Further action
The finding has been reported to the management of BBC Sport and discussed with Mr Lineker.

www.bbc.co.uk/contact/ecu/gary-lineker-and-twitter

But this is my point exactly. The BBC dealt with it quietly and without making a huge gesture. “Discussed” with Lineker in private…..that’s it.

Since this, Lineker has continued to make political tweets. No complaints. No action. BBC apparently unconcerned. Until now.

Heres a question - what do the two complaints have in common? They both criticise the Tory government.

Isn’t it a huge coincidence that Lineker commentating politically isn’t a problem unless he’s being critical of the government? And then all kinds of shit descend upon him.

If Lineker continuing to tweet politically was a problem after this complaint, action should have been taken - but silence. Until now when he’s ripped into government policy.

Tell me again how the BBC is impartial.

It doesn’t matter whether you agree with him or not - I’m feeling quite shocked that the BBC is so openly controlled by government policy.

Do they pay to stay in these detention centres or hotels? No? Then they're free. No lie. End of discussion.

Oh, come on. The hotels are not inadequate - that’s just a lie.

The fact is they go to the top of the council house list when they are granted leave to remain. They bring their families over and they often have three or more kids. They get moved from temporary accommodation into permanent houses. They are advised by charities who tell them to get a family support worker who will advocate for them and make it more likely that they get better housing, furniture, additional hours in nursery, paid for by the local authority.

It is what it is and I doubt whether there is any going back now. Too many people are getting rich off the back of all this and those people generally despise the working poor who are the most adversely affected. But let’s not pretend that the people granted leave to remain don’t immediately get passports, go home for holidays and start building luxury houses in their own countries in preparation for their retirement (taking their UK pensions with them, naturally).

MibsXX · 11/03/2023 00:20

and the way they are going, just how long before they convince the general public that it's fine to be sending feckless unemployed/long term sick etc over to join those poor refugees in the Rwandan Gov sponsored camps?....

Crikeyalmighty · 11/03/2023 00:21

If you think it's storm in a teacup- in private eye current edition, one of their readers had his copy of private eye taken off him from his bag at the House of Commons at the security desk , because apparently 'it contains stuff that is derogatory to the government ' Apparently free speech is fine , but not it seems if it's negative to the Tory's!! The Michael Risen quote is bang on the nail- Farage also used these tactics.

@BigRed98

Im just saying, if your a woman who supports uncontrolled immigration of military aged men and then one day you find yourself getting raped by a immigrant (BTW im not saying its only immigrants doing the raping) then its technically your fault because she wanted this.

"She wanted this"?

Your point of view is absolutely disgusting.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

I hope you never reveal them to women in your life, at least one of whom is likely statistically to have been a victim of sexual assault.

I don't want to speak further to someone who speaks this way, and thinks this way, about rape.
