To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

@saraclara it might not be down to refugees but how is bringing in thousands more people going to help the situation ??

We are densely populated
Our schools are full to bursting
We can't get appointments with doctors
We've been brainwashed into thinking a 2 week wait for a cancer referral is "good" (in other countries, it's same/next day)
Our traffic is a nightmare
I tried to book my car in for a minor fix. Weeks wait.
I tried to get driving lessons for my ds. Months and months waiting.
Anyone trying to get their kid help from CAMHS - well good luck with that. Come back in 2 years.
There are too many of us here and if we want to help people who need asylum/refugees, people who can do so need to donate money.
We cannot just simply say oh yes we will help, please come here. Because we can't even help ourselves. Let alone more people.

I hate the BBC and MOTD anyway. Shut the lot of them down and do away with the licence fee.

Well said

Huge overreaction by BBC.

If they'd ignored it then GL's tweet would been consigned to the dustbin of twitter.

Instead they've highlighted quite how mad the Government snowflakes are and how cowed the BBC are.

We need migrants. The government know this so we will continue to bring them in.

Our problems with housing, health and the asylum system are all down to 13 years of chaotic, corrupt, incompetent Conservative government. Not people who have just arrived in the country.

Nat6999 · 10/03/2023 23:44

The BBC are the least impartial group out there. It's a joke.

The BBC despite being publicly funded are still reliant on the government to allow them to exist. I think that in the circumstances they do a fair job of impartiality. Although FB presenting QT is a nightmare.

lollipoprainbow · 10/03/2023 23:48

@TooBigForMyBoots cracked record alert Jees ! Yes it might be the government over the last 13 years as has been mentioned on this thread and others many times doesn't answer the question of how can our overstretched services cope with more people ???

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 10/03/2023 23:48

Steve Wilson has tweeted this
As commentators on MOTD, we have decided to step down from tomorrow night’s broadcast.

RLScott · 10/03/2023 23:49

Completely endorse the stance by Lineker, Wright and co. Shipping people off to Rwanda, which although is doing quite well for itself, felt very wrong.

Just hearing no commentators for the games either which pretty much makes it impossible for Match if the Day to be shown.

refugees contribute as much as they cost.

Without refugees we would be even more short on medical and educational professionals.

And lots of refugees are net contributors, in terms of tax, etc

refugees are not the problem

they are just presented as the problem.

Sky upload highlights to YouTube so where's the copyright infringement?

Fair enough, but having a quick Google showed the West Ham Brighton match had 2 minutes 10 seconds of play.

I suspect anything more is not akin to MOTD, or is not legal.

murasaki · 10/03/2023 23:51

Apparently the bbc will use the world feed for commentary, they really aren't backing down on this.

Idiots.

If we accept the impartiality clause applies to a freelancer (dubious but let’s pretend it does) - where has been the reprimands before?

Gary Lineker and Twitter October 2022
Complaint
In response to the then-Foreign Secretary’s call for English football league teams to boycott the Champions League final in Russia in the event of qualifying, Mr Lineker tweeted: “And her party will hand back their donations from Russian donors?”.
A reader of the tweet questioned whether it was consistent with the BBC’s requirements in relation to impartiality.

The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of impartiality and the Guidance on the use of social media by people working for the BBC.

Outcome
Mr Lineker is one of the BBC’s highest profile stars and, although he does not work exclusively for the BBC, is perhaps best known for presenting Match of the Day on BBC One.

In the ECU’s judgement Mr Lineker, though not involved in BBC journalism, therefore falls into the category of those for whom there is an “additional responsibility” as set out in the Guidance....

at a time when relations between the UK and Russia were the subject of significant public debate...

we found the tweet was in breach of the relevant Guidance and did not meet the BBC’s editorial standards on impartiality.

Further action
The finding has been reported to the management of BBC Sport and discussed with Mr Lineker.

I mean the small boats needing to be stopped - just sent some people into the camps in Calais that have come from here and start telling the truth about how zenophobic the UK is, how few decent jobs there are, just how it is and surely that would help dissuade people from coming if they didn't think we were some sunny uplands of a place.
Maybe we suffer from PR that is too good and not an accurate reflection of the horrible island we actually are.
Also it's amazing that with so many striking for fair pay and conditions, the government have found cash on the good old magic money tree to pay France with. They could spend it on employing staff to process all those currently stuck in hotels to see if their claims are valid or not and then they would be able to work and contribute as they'd rather be doing.
Ken Follet's Century trilogy is brilliant and set just before the WW1 and goes through to the cold war. Lots of how the division was sown by communists which became fascism. Good ideas and how they can get corrupted. You can see how we are where we are today in terms of geopolitics. I highly recommend it.

longtompot · 10/03/2023 23:53

Bernadinetta · 10/03/2023 20:24

I’m always mindful of this Michael Rosen quote:

”I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.
Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you…

It doesn’t walk in saying,
“Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution.”

I read a tweet which said the holocaust didn't start at the gas chambers. Michael Rosens quote illustrates that to a tee

It's true.

We need more teachers.
We need more doctors & nurses.
We need more mechanics.
We need more driving instructors.
We need more mental health workers.

Where oh where are we going to get them from??

From our own population.

Our underfunded, run into the ground by the Tories services need to employ more people, including new arrivals, and be run by a competent government who understand how stuff works and the importance of things like housing, health, and people.

“None of that is down to refugees. It's down to a government committed to austerity in public services for 13 years.“

Absolutely this. The UK is not densely populated at all. Poor public services are a straightforward political decision.

@BigRed98

if a woman supports open borders and then is getting raped by a man who just so happens to be an immigrant then why should I or any western man protect her?

You should be absolutely fucking ashamed of yourself for thinking, let alone saying, this.

It's one of the worst things I've read on here.
