To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

1000 replies

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

Someone should ask Gary Lineker how many migrants/refugees we should take. Surely we will be cruel/Nazis if we turn anyone away.

An equal amount to the rest of the world based on our GDP. Currently we are failing badly.

I queried your post as I was surprised that your one school has managed to find itself so many refugees who are both fully qualified to teach and speak such fluent English that they can immediately be deployed in UK schools.

It is truly remarkable.

It is not remarkable, or uncommon.

I suspect many people on this thread are interacting with professionals who are refugees, quite regularly and have absolutely no idea.

People have a strange picture in their head of what a "refugee" looks like

"FYI - there are no legal routes to the UK for many of those who are seeking asylum, so they have no choice other than to make perilous journeys. The reason men tend to make up the bulk of those travelling is because they are more likely to survive."
What do you mean "they have no choice"? They have to come here, to the UK specifically, and no other country? Why?

Every refugee and asylum seeker has their reasons for picking the UK. I cannot answer for them.

What I can say is that my father's family left Russia in the early 1800s to escape the Russian pogoms. Was that wrong, should they have picked somewhere else? I thank to god they did not and had the sense to flee mainland Europe.

I made this point earlier - either we have border controls and are therefore like“Nazis” (because people will invariably be held in detention and deported) or we don’t and let anyone in who wants to come here and are therefore lovely, kind people like Gary.

There are very few people advocating for open borders, or saying that every person presenting as an asylum seeker should be automatically granted asylum. That is a plain and obvious straw man.

Many people want a safe, legal route for asylum seekers, and a system that allows their applications to be processed in a fair and lawful manner, without demonizing them as part of some sort of invading army.

But have fun arguing with staw-men.

Stoic123 · 10/03/2023 23:16

StalkedByASpider · 10/03/2023 22:18

Arguing about whether Lineker’s comments are justified misses the entire point.

It doesn’t matter whether you agree with him. The point is that he’s been very vocal over the years on many different subjects which were political. Including since the new BBC head honcho arrived.

No consequences. No threats to remove him from air.

His status as a freelance sports presenter seemed to allow him to use his personal Twitter account to share his views.

Except now that he’s criticised the government on a highly contentious issue - and the government want him silenced and off air. And so off he goes.

This is the government choosing what he’s allowed to say. There’s no consistency. This so called rule about freelancers being impartial has only been applied when the government complained.

The BBC has demonstrated that it’s not impartial - they have been happy for Lineker to comment before. No one even suggested that he be reprimanded for his comments about Qatar, or gay rights.

So let’s be clear - it’s not that he isn’t allowed to comment, it’s just that he’s only allowed to comment things that the government approves of…..

Huge, huge problem here. And it’s not Lineker.

Thank you.

The Tory government's blackmailing of the BBC is a national disgrace.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/03/2023 23:17

Someone like Gary Lineker has to look the victim in the eye and say "I'm sorry, but you are collateral damage so that people can me can reap the benefits of living in a modern multicultural society".

Fucking hell.

Are you going to send me flowers because my immigrant relatives saved you from Naziism by flying bombing missions over Europe?

And thank my immigrant MW for delivering my excellent child.

And every single person who performs a service or adds to your life who isn't 100% purebred. Do they get hobnobs?

If it was up to me you'd be eating gruel and pease pudding. No dirty foreign food for the rest of your natural.

"If they were allowed to work while their applications are being processed, that would benefit us all too."
In what way would it "benefit us all"?
If they didn't have to risk their lives to get here, there'd be far more people coming here.

It's a ridiculous argument.

You're right. They need to be able to work and have safe passage. We have a big labour shortage.

Kennykenkencat · 10/03/2023 23:20

highfidelity · 10/03/2023 22:28

And I beg to disagree with you Kennykenkencat.

When the Nazi party came to power in the 1930s, they did not have a plan to kill all the Jews in Germany, let alone in Europe. However, the Nazis were antisemtic and saw Jews as a problem, and the cause of all problems in Germany, hence The Jewish Question. The aim was, at least initially, to make all the Jews emigrate. But, it was WWII that changed this and lead to The Final Solution which was the decision to systematically kill all Jews and lead to the building of extermination camps. This happened in 1941 and is the point the Holocaust began - holocaust means destruction or slaughter on a mass scale.

Read more here.

Well my family lived it or rather ran from it and that was prior to 1939.

They saw what was happening and left everything and escaped.

Be mindful that MOTD is also on Sunday morning so smart casual?
A footie strip could be seen as bias … wait maybe they’ll have to ask Rylan 🤷🏼‍♀️

You've gone too far, Evlis! Too far. I can't, simply cannot, see Rylan flaming Clark on one more effing programme. My TV can't take having anything else thrown at it! 😄

Rubbish. We are a small country, densely populated. We are also a democracy. Put it to a referendum if there's any confusion.

If Gary Lineker worked for a commercial broadcaster, he could say what he wanted and it'd be up to his employer to deal with. He works for the BBC. WE are his employers. So people absolutely have a right to disagree with him and make their feelings known.

The BBC needs to go away. People are always going to disagree with a broadcaster that they are forced to pay for.

Not to mention that the reason that many refugees head to the UK and not to France, is because they speak English!

My own English teacher back in the day, was a Ugandan Asian refugee.

Btjdkfnn · 10/03/2023 23:29

We are densely populated
Our schools are full to bursting
We can't get appointments with doctors
We've been brainwashed into thinking a 2 week wait for a cancer referral is "good" (in other countries, it's same/next day)
Our traffic is a nightmare
I tried to book my car in for a minor fix. Weeks wait.
I tried to get driving lessons for my ds. Months and months waiting.
Anyone trying to get their kid help from CAMHS - well good luck with that. Come back in 2 years.
There are too many of us here and if we want to help people who need asylum/refugees, people who can do so need to donate money.
We cannot just simply say oh yes we will help, please come here. Because we can't even help ourselves. Let alone more people.

I hate the BBC and MOTD anyway. Shut the lot of them down and do away with the licence fee.

None of that is down to refugees. It's down to a government committed to austerity in public services for 13 years.

We need more teachers.
We need more doctors & nurses.

I didn't say it was down to refugees. It is just factual a statement of what a shit show the UK is these days, regardless of the cause.

We have people desperate in food banks and people with no heating. We have thousands upon thousands of homeless people. We cannot even deal with ourselves - why bring more people into this mess? It makes no sense.

I didn't vote conservative anyway. I have no loyalty to them. I just think we are fucked.
