To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

This journalist sums up brilliantly the issue twitter.com/lallylangford/status/1634279868606173194?s=61&t=WHCVHBX9QTe3g6CufqQV6Q

It's a Twitter post of Sky news

What exactly do you lot mean when you say virtue signalling? Do you just mean when someone else has an opinion that makes you feel guilty about your own opinions?

She’s just brainlessly repeating the buzzwords she hears in right wing media.

Given Lineker’s actually hosted several refugees, he cannot reasonably be accused of virtue signalling, even if you don’t happen to agree with him on the issue.

I dont think so, match highlights are available on you tube, and my sons and their friends will be watching there, and not MOTD, which the said is pointless without the pundits. I expect many others will agree

That's nice that they're so politically aware that they're prepared to ignore copyright law.

And you claim the moral high ground?

Oh wow. So much bigotry in one post.

Also, why is it mostly women who are the ones that support mass immigration of mostly military aged men? if a woman supports open borders and then is getting raped by a man who just so happens to be an immigrant then why should I or any western man protect her?

I am speechless at this.

Oh yes.

A few things -

The NHS is at breaking point because the government has been deliberately underfunding it for 12 years.

There is a shortfall in social housing and housing as a whole is because consecutive governments have not been building council houses or making it attractive for investors to build low cost housing. Also, many Tory politians are landlords and own vast portfolios of property. They have no interest in creating affordable and plentiful homes for people to buy.

FYI - there are no legal routes to the UK for many of those who are seeking asylum, so they have no choice other than to make perilous journeys. The reason men tend to make up the bulk of those travelling is because they are more likely to survive.

I don't think anyone is calling for open boarders, and blaming 46,000 people for all the UKs problems merely detracts from the fact that the Government is responsible for so much of the current mess.

Someone should ask Gary Lineker how many migrants/refugees we should take. Surely we will be cruel/Nazis if we turn anyone away.

What do you mean "they have no choice"? They have to come here, to the UK specifically, and no other country? Why?

AmataSum · 10/03/2023 23:02

Neededanewuserhandle · 10/03/2023 20:48

"There is no huge influx" That's an opinion. 30K arrivals by boat might be described that way in some opinions, or not in his.

Look at the attached graph and see how many refugees the UK take in per capita compared to EU countries. If we had a proper system to process asylum seekers they would not be risking their lives coming here like they do. If they were allowed to work while their applications are being processed, that would benefit us all too.

What the heck is "the immigration industry"?

Dear me. The smell of desperation is as strong as standing downwind from a teenage lad dowsed in Lynx.

In what way would it "benefit us all"?
If they didn't have to risk their lives to get here, there'd be far more people coming here.

It's a ridiculous argument.

I wonder what she'd wear? Would she go evening because it's broadcast at night? Or casual. Or would she go full football strip?

I would comment that probably neither of them know anything about football but they hardly know anything about everything they talk about so no difference there.

Hmmm tough call 🤔
A smart trouser and a red lip *fucking hate things that are always pairs being made singular but that a whole other thread 😬😂
Be mindful that MOTD is also on Sunday morning so smart casual?
A footie strip could be seen as bias … wait maybe they’ll have to ask Rylan 🤷🏼‍♀️

Exactly.

As the disgusting Bernard Manning said, “just because a dog is born in a stable doesn’t make it a horse”.

Personally, I’m not so concerned with what GL but that he has a right to express a political opinion. I find it very disturbing that our government is trying to silence people from having an alternative political opinion.

I made this point earlier - either we have border controls and are therefore like“Nazis” (because people will invariably be held in detention and deported) or we don’t and let anyone in who wants to come here and are therefore lovely, kind people like Gary.

Same day as they are refusing to televise David Attenborough's damage to the planet episode, part of a series. They are afraid of rightwing backlash

Lineker has commented frequently since 2020 on political subjects.

Fir example he was very outspoken about Qatar and human rights, gay rights. His own Twitter has never been impartial - he’s an engaged social commentator.

If we accept the impartiality clause applies to a freelancer (dubious but let’s pretend it does) - where has been the reprimands before? Why hasn’t the BBC taken action over his impartial comments previously. There’s a very long list of politically loaded tweets from Gary.

Nothing.

Until the government complains because Lineker criticised their contentious policy. They demanded action from the BBC and whoosh! Just like magic, the BBC are pointing to his contract and booting him off air.

If Lineker was daft enough to sign a contract agreeing not to comment then I have no issue with them enforcing it. But I do have an issue with them ONLY enforcing it if the government tells them to. And that’s what has happened.

The issue isn’t that he’s made political comments, it’s that the government doesn’t like them. It’s making the BBC look like an government stooge - and not very impartial at all 😕

I don't disagree with what you're saying. It's a rule that should be applied equally. But I can't have sympathy for GL because he deliberately goads. He's been warned but carries on doing it. How long can you keep others under check if you let him get away with it?

Personally, I'd sack him. But then, I don't like him, I think he's paid too much, and I hate football. No skin off my nose if he goes! Surely, there are more people in the world than can talk about football than him for a lot less money. I'd heave ho the lot of them and get the next generation in, that have more contacts in the game. Didn't the BBC sack off all the Question of Sport team, and Tom Jones off The Voice because they liked freshening things up? Why not the same here?

MavisMcMinty · 10/03/2023 23:14

Gary Lineker has been fantastic since Brexit, and attracted an awful lot of vitriol for his very occasional “political” tweets.

I hate the way (e.g.) footballers are told to (e.g.) “concentrate on the football, love”, as though politics is only for politicians and political journalists.

Politics is for everyone, or should be, there are already far too many apathetic people who believe “all parties are the same” or that politics doesn’t affect their lives.

I stand with Gary Lineker, on this and on pretty much everything else as well.
