To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

1000 replies

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

We really do actually, hence why he has so much support.

No, his ego.has been inflated by too much adulation. He actually thinks that easy historical comparisons make him a political pundit of principle. But he showed no sign of principles in Qatar, did he, when he accepted an obscene amount of money to present the World Cup games on tv and ignored the exploitation of and cruelty towards immigrants there. They must have a lower class of immigrant.in Qatar.

I wonder if he has political ambitions and if these statements he has made are the opening shots of a campaign.

lollipoprainbow · 10/03/2023 22:07

@Nimbostratus100 so as well as doctors, nurses coming over on the boats we have teachers also?? Such naivety.

yes.

In my current school the head of maths is a refugee

In my last school several maths and science teachers were refugees

In a neighbouring school the ONLY qualified maths teacher is a refugee

In all these cases, the students of these teachers would Not have access to a qualified teacher if we hadn't luckily taken in these people and granted refugee status.

I have been involved in refugee support for decades, and have known many educational and health care professionals who have arrived here fully qualified, very experienced and have started work as soon as refugee status was confirmed

I have also known many others who either were professionally qualified when they arrived, or else did professional qualifications here, and went on to pay top rate tax

It is a complete nonsense to say refugees are a drain on society. some are, some are not, overall, it probably breaks pretty much even in financial terms, but we benefit in may other ways.

but, of course, in some areas, such as maths and science teachers, we would be in a very desperate situation indeed in many schools without refugees.

If Gary goes the BBC might be able to use the money they save to keep the BBC singers employed. He’s replaceable, get some new talent in.

“asylum seekers have no recourse to public funds and don't get benefits”

Until they get an NI number …. 🤷🏼‍♀️ all comes out of different pots of money. They get housed, fed and looked after until then. There’s loads of support.

And then they get a passport and go straight back home for a holiday.

I own a business and live in London - I know this for a fact.

It doesn’t matter whether you agree with him or not. The point is that he should be allowed to express his opinion on his own Twitter account. If he had come out in support of the government no one would be complaining. The whole thing stinks, and I am so heartened by his colleagues standing by him.

Well yes this is the point.

But apparently the Government is so fragile a mere football presenter needs putting in his place.

This journalist sums up brilliantly the issue twitter.com/lallylangford/status/1634279868606173194?s=61&t=WHCVHBX9QTe3g6CufqQV6Q

It's a Twitter post of Sky news.

Well done that man

Thank you for that

wurlycurly · 10/03/2023 22:52

His remarks were made about language used about people seeking asylum, not migrants in general. Don't confuse the two.

SweetcornFritter · 10/03/2023 22:52

Should the country simply abandon any attempt at border control and let anyone come to live here who wants to come even if they have left countries where their lives are not in danger? Because if not I’d love to hear a solution to the small boats issue which doesn’t involve so-called “Nazi” tactics / language.

wurlycurly · 10/03/2023 22:53

Oh wow. So much bigotry in one post.

Also, why is it mostly women who are the ones that support mass immigration of mostly military aged men? if a woman supports open borders and then is getting raped by a man who just so happens to be an immigrant then why should I or any western man protect her?

I am speechless at this.

Of course he doesn't live in the real world, have you seen his salary,? and if he's housed a couple of refugees, I would assume his property is so big that he would have nothing to do with them.

He has been personally involved in supporting and advocating for refugees he knows.

I honestly don’t know what I think. I’m caught between freedom of speech being respected and the highest paid BBC employee wildly virtue signalling. I really hate the second but think the first is important.

What exactly do you lot mean when you say virtue signalling? Do you just mean when someone else has an opinion that makes you feel guilty about your own opinions?

SchoolQuestionnaire · 10/03/2023 22:57

Graces7 · 10/03/2023 20:11

Because what we all need right now is a grossly overpaid, overexposed sports presenter with a sketchy grasp of history to virtue signal his unsolicited, personal, political opinion & bias.

Speak for yourself. Our politicians have clearly demonstrated that don’t have a moral compass or backbone between them so Lineker is a breath of fresh air. He has the courage of his convictions and is prepared to speak out.

This isn’t an issue of political opinion, the language and rhetoric being spoken by our government is morally wrong.

Shulk · 10/03/2023 22:57

The mask has certainly slipped, hasn’t it?

The BBC has become the ‘moderate’ voice of the Conservative Party, while its more overtly partisan sections of the right wing media pretend that the BBC is left wing propaganda.

No doubt they Daily Mail and co will all be back to moaning about ‘cancel culture’ within the week, pretending the right don’t also engage in it.

He has a contract that says he will bide by BBC rules. Tim Davie introduced new rules in 2020.

People don't lose their job for having political opinions. They lose their job for expressing them in a manner that the company they work for says they can't.

Lineker has commented frequently since 2020 on political subjects.

Fir example he was very outspoken about Qatar and human rights, gay rights. His own Twitter has never been impartial - he’s an engaged social commentator.

If we accept the impartiality clause applies to a freelancer (dubious but let’s pretend it does) - where has been the reprimands before? Why hasn’t the BBC taken action over his impartial comments previously. There’s a very long list of politically loaded tweets from Gary.

Nothing.

Until the government complains because Lineker criticised their contentious policy. They demanded action from the BBC and whoosh! Just like magic, the BBC are pointing to his contract and booting him off air.

If Lineker was daft enough to sign a contract agreeing not to comment then I have no issue with them enforcing it. But I do have an issue with them ONLY enforcing it if the government tells them to. And that’s what has happened.

The issue isn’t that he’s made political comments, it’s that the government doesn’t like them. It’s making the BBC look like an government stooge - and not very impartial at all 😕

Lovemelovemydoggie · 10/03/2023 22:58

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 22:40

no, I didn't say migrants

I said refugees.

Refugees.

why would you quote me asking if I meant something different to what I said?

I queried your post as I was surprised that your one school has managed to find itself so many refugees who are both fully qualified to teach and speak such fluent English that they can immediately be deployed in UK schools.

It is truly remarkable.
