To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

I wonder if the people referring to 1930s Germany don’t know what it was like
using dehumanising language to describe immigrants - check

Who immigrated to Germany in the 1930s? Please tell me you're not referring to Jewish Germans as immigrants.

The Nazi Party certainly viewed them as not German - ditto Roma people - being born in a country doesn;t protect you from fascists

Lochroy · 10/03/2023 22:38

@Yulelogs I really think we must be watching different BBCs. And I'm saying that as someone who is naturally right of centre rather than left. I just don't see the BBC being at all critical of Brexit. If we look at the state of the economy, so much is caused by Brexit and yet the BBC just aren't giving it any publicity.

I don't disagree that the comments and coverage from both sides during the Brexit campaigning were negative and derogatory. I also agree we need to have a debate on immigration. But I think it needs to be fact based an unemotional.

I also agree that political reporters on the BBC should be impartial.

But I simply do not see the BBC as having left wing presenters. And what I do see is

  1. The top levels being populated by people with overtly right wing backgrounds
  2. A worrying silencing of someone
IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 10/03/2023 22:38

Very misjudged by the BBC in my opinion. They look like Tory shills and it all just looks dishonest. This will backfire on them for sure.

Suzi888 · 10/03/2023 22:38

Shame BBC didn’t tell Jimmy Saville, Stuart Hall and Rolf Harris to “step back.”

They used dehumanising language to describe other people who they saw as ‘the other’ or not like them-irrespective of where they lived. They blamed a section of society for society’s problems. So not unlike today.

I know the controversy, but I’m having trouble finding the original comments that Gary Lineker was referring too. Can someone signpost me to the comments that’s sound like 1930’s Germany?

Here

He is referring to the use of language with regards to refugees.

To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment
DowningStreetParty · 10/03/2023 22:40

Total solidarity with Lineker and Wright. And so pleased to see that they are standing together, doing exactly the right morally truthful thing. I think the BBC have been so attacked and undermined by this government that their top management have been cowed and ceased to be impartial about what impartiality actually is.

Every human rights group and religious group that’s commented finds this effective ending of legal asylum to the UK disgusting. I’m very happy to see that such high profile figures are speaking up about it. of course they should be able to. Otherwise it’s just government appeasement that BBC management are demanding, which is definitely not written into Lineker’s contract.

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 22:40

Lovemelovemydoggie · 10/03/2023 21:56

Do you mean migrants?

Also I don’t necessarily believe in the long-term that it is a good thing that well-educated immigrants are plugging employment gaps in so many sectors in the UK.

It masks the dire state of education in this country and how unemployable vast numbers of school leavers are. There would be more pressure on the government to value and increase spending on education and apprenticeships if there wasn’t an alternative work force available.

no, I didn't say migrants

I said refugees.

Refugees.

why would you quote me asking if I meant something different to what I said?

I think its wonderful so many mumsnetters are welcoming these poor people to live in their homes and support them like thats bloke who played football once and sells crisps

Ridiculous comment. Do you support our offer of help to people from Ukraine? If so, have you offered a place for them in your home?

TomeTome · 10/03/2023 22:41

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright
Well done all three.

Suzi888 · 10/03/2023 22:42

“asylum seekers have no recourse to public funds and don't get benefits”

Until they get an NI number …. 🤷🏼‍♀️ all comes out of different pots of money. They get housed, fed and looked after until then. There’s loads of support.

Hillary17 · 10/03/2023 22:42

Absolutely agree. Firstly because he’s right and it’s a disgusting policy but also, because his view has no impact on his abilities to fulfil his job!

Thanks for that, I’ve seen that bit but I’m trying to find the original comments he is talking about so I can see for myself what meaning I take from them.

Gary needs to go as does the bbc really. They have failed spectacularly in remaining impartial over so many issues recently.

I don’t want unqualified, unelected broadcasters spouting their own personal opinions on the BBC thanks.

Regarding immigration the government needs to do everything in their power to stop boats coming into this country. To stop people making that perilous journey, children dying and people trafficking.

They need to introduce a really robust points based system so we are the ones choosing which migrants to accept based in our current economic needs.

Unfortunately we can’t support the constant stream of asylum seekers heading for our shores. We’re in a cost of living crisis and the NHS is on its knees. People need to get real about this.

he didn't say anything on the BBC

It is really quite frightening how the far left are trying to shut down debate in this country and this has been driven by the BBC imo especially with their brexit coverage.

No, love, the people doing the silencing are those on the right.

Read the thread. Try and keep up.

MarshaMelrose · 10/03/2023 22:46

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 22:37

he hasn't broken his contract- he has no impartiality clause in his contract. Do you have one in yours? Most people don't. Nobody should be losing their job because of their political opinions

He has a contract that says he will bide by BBC rules. Tim Davie introduced new rules in 2020.

People don't lose their job for having political opinions. They lose their job for expressing them in a manner that the company they work for says they can't.

@Mirabai so you think it's acceptable that a child has to go miles to another school??

People don’t get their first school of choice across the country, it’s nothing to do with immigration. To blame immigrants for that is disgraceful.
