To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

Which wording did he sign (ie what was part of his contract)

Doggydooda · 10/03/2023 22:24

HNRTFT but I have had my faith in human nature restored …am so glad that all the commentators have shown solidarity! Being shutdown by the Tory paymasters is really a horrible nightmare! My son who is a massive football fan has just got home from work and a few drinks in London and all his colleagues are 100% behind Gary and cohorts!
These are people who are earning a lot of money but they have a conscience!

This thread is shameful. So many narrow minded bigots, quite happy to accept the benefits of the accident of their birth nation, but unwilling to share with those born to awful, punishing regimes. I’m ashamed to say I’m English reading some of this entitled shite.

The same bigots who contribute fuck all to the nation.

Yulelogs · 10/03/2023 22:24

It is really quite frightening how the far left are trying to shut down debate in this country and this has been driven by the BBC imo especially with their brexit coverage.

I was appalled during the brexit debate about how my middle class fiends basically said any northern pro brexit people were essentially ignorant chavs who shouldn’t be allowed to vote because they’re so stupid etc….

I’m appalled about how anyone with concerns about immigration is very quickly shut down and labelled a racist in some circles.

Im shocked that an impartial broadcaster like the BBC has so many presenters and instances where they haven’t remained impartial.

Its up to the electorate who they vote for not up to the BBC / their left wing presenters to try and sway public opinion. People need to be presented with impartial facts and left to
make up their own minds.

IClaudine · 10/03/2023 22:25

This is not about legal immigration or a safe place for anyone from a war torn country

The boats are full of economic migrants, trafficked by criminal gangs

So how do you explain the fact that over 60% of people arriving by boat are awarded asylum?

MarnieSQ · 10/03/2023 22:26

StalkedByASpider · 10/03/2023 22:18

Arguing about whether Lineker’s comments are justified misses the entire point.

It doesn’t matter whether you agree with him. The point is that he’s been very vocal over the years on many different subjects which were political. Including since the new BBC head honcho arrived.

No consequences. No threats to remove him from air.

His status as a freelance sports presenter seemed to allow him to use his personal Twitter account to share his views.

Except now that he’s criticised the government on a highly contentious issue - and the government want him silenced and off air. And so off he goes.

This is the government choosing what he’s allowed to say. There’s no consistency. This so called rule about freelancers being impartial has only been applied when the government complained.

The BBC has demonstrated that it’s not impartial - they have been happy for Lineker to comment before. No one even suggested that he be reprimanded for his comments about Qatar, or gay rights.

So let’s be clear - it’s not that he isn’t allowed to comment, it’s just that he’s only allowed to comment things that the government approves of…..

Huge, huge problem here. And it’s not Lineker.

And on the back of Tory loans. Talk about control. A dangerous World, if we are allowed to be missed by BBC ‘ contollers’ www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/richard-sharp-bbc-boris-johnson-loan-b2280531.html

No wonder the BBC is shutting down dialogue which doesn't sit right with Suella.

Corrupt Tory’s and a dangerous MP.

I have dealt with an issue this week, where Braverman is involved. She has misrepresented to twist an incident, to support her rhetoric. In this case, factually incorrect, spouting untruths.

ITV can do what they want, people aren't being forced to pay to watch it. The BBC should just go away at this point, it's a joke and it has been for quite some time. Lineker is just embarassing. It seems like he wants to be some kind of martyr, but he still lives in a mansion. People like him are manna from heaven for the Tory party as they just show the left as overbearing, obnoxious and hypocritical, talking about things they know nothing about and have no experience of.

But Lineker has ample experience of hosting and supporting refugees, and he does know exactly what he is talking about

Agreed @Yulelogs
Look at the backlash people get on here alone for voicing concerns. As soon as you do, you are labelled a racist, bigot or worse.

I wonder if the people referring to 1930s Germany don’t know what it was like
using dehumanising language to describe immigrants - check

Who immigrated to Germany in the 1930s? Please tell me you're not referring to Jewish Germans as immigrants.

"If they want to do that, they shouldn't sign an agreement that they won't. "

Which wording did he sign (ie what was part of his contract)

Obviously I don't know the exact wording of his contract but it says they have to abide by certain rules of the BBC, no swearing, etc.

Tim Davie brought in new rules regarding social media. So to break those rules would be to break the contract.

I beg to disagree on the point of when the holocaust started. I think you will find it dates back to 1933 when the Nazis came to power and the intention was to kill all the Jews in Europe.

Don’t forget the Nazis annexed Austria in 1938. Do you think they didn’t do anything to the Jewish population. Do you think they all survived or were able to get trains out of the country’s and safe passage to another mainland European country.

The Final Solution, the gas chambers might not have been until the 40s but they were killing Jews and sending them to death camps prior to the gas chambers which were all about speeding up the process that had already been started.

And I beg to disagree with you Kennykenkencat.

When the Nazi party came to power in the 1930s, they did not have a plan to kill all the Jews in Germany, let alone in Europe. However, the Nazis were antisemtic and saw Jews as a problem, and the cause of all problems in Germany, hence The Jewish Question. The aim was, at least initially, to make all the Jews emigrate. But, it was WWII that changed this and lead to The Final Solution which was the decision to systematically kill all Jews and lead to the building of extermination camps. This happened in 1941 and is the point the Holocaust began - holocaust means destruction or slaughter on a mass scale.

@SunsetsInVenice asylum seekers have no recourse to public funds and don't get benefits

Where do they live?
What do they eat?
Who pays for that?
Gary Lineker?

MarshaMelrose · 10/03/2023 21:47

It doesn't make any difference. Broadcasters have been told that they can't make politically biased comments. It's not like he doesn't know that.
It's like your 7yos primary school teacher publishing topless photos of herself on an open FB page. It's not on school time, it's not on a school FB or WhatsApp. But it's not allowed. Same as if you tweeted publicly that the company you worked for sold poor quality goods and customers would be better going elsewhere. If it wasn't on a work account, would the company be OK with that?

Sue Gray is now going to be paid by the Labour Party. Does that mean you no longer believe her party gate report? I actually think both Richard Sharps and Sye Grays appointments are problematic but it doesn't mean to me that they have been biased in their work.

Broadcasters should not have been told they cant make political comments. Broadcaster have not agreed they cant make political comments.

Some broadcasters agree to these terms in their contract - broadcaster who are involved in news, politics and current affairs - not sports personalities.

it is not the same as a teacher appearing topless on facebook, or someone slagging of their company

It is the equivalent of that teacher, or company worker having political views. No school or company would be in their rights to try and prevent them

He could have expressed an entirely different viewpoint & it would still have garnered support, it would just be from a different audience. Personal interest in the unsolicited political views of BBC football commentators in general, nil.

BlueSeaWave · 10/03/2023 22:35

I know the controversy, but I’m having trouble finding the original comments that Gary Lineker was referring too. Can someone signpost me to the comments that’s sound like 1930’s Germany?

I would comment that probably neither of them know anything about football but they hardly know anything about everything they talk about so no difference there.

where should they live - on the streets?
What should they eat - would you have them starve?
Who pays - we do - happy to

Also people don't just claim asylum because of war - they flee countries where their politics, race, ethnicity, sexuality or religion would result in persecution, imprisonment or death

Any rape committed by a migrant is a rape that wouldn't have happened without immigration. Someone like Gary Lineker has to look the victim in the eye and say "I'm sorry, but you are collateral damage so that people can me can reap the benefits of living in a modern multicultural society". It's utter bullshit and more and more people are starting to realise this. We simply cannot take in every refugee that wants to come here. There's no reason for ANY refugee to come here as they pass through any number of safe countries to get here.

Any rape committed by a migrant is a rape that wouldn't have happened without immigration

My child was saved by immigrants working for the NHS. Our fucking joke ex PM was treated by a bunch of immigrants as he lay ill with Covid.

Will you look me in the eye and tell me my baby or your child has to die next time, as " collateral damage so that we can live in an immigrant free fucking ,monocultural society?" for fucks sake....

Can't have it both ways...

In 1930s Germany:
the nuremberg laws were passed which banned marriage between jews and non jews

kristallnacht - the destruction of Jewish homes and stores - was supported by the government

Jews were entered into forced manual labour

I wonder if the people referring to 1930s Germany don’t know what it was like.

Yes, this is all correct, but the big picture is that Jews were being made scapegoats in 1930s Germany for all that was 'wrong' with the country.

This is what the Tory government are doing this with those in small boats who are crossing the Channel. They are the reasons for all that is wrong with the UK.

And as a Jew, I very much know the difference between 1930s Germany and 1940s Germany thankyouveymuch.

Does being rich mean you can just break your contract? Why do you think poor people have to keep to their contract but you're happy for rich people not to.

he hasn't broken his contract- he has no impartiality clause in his contract. Do you have one in yours? Most people don't. Nobody should be losing their job because of their political opinions
