To ask what stops you voting for the tories ?

For me
The unending shite that is brexit
Corruption and dishonesty, especially during the pandemic but not uniquely. And not just Johnson.
Making already deprived areas compete against each other for levelling up money whilst perfectly affluent tory voting areas are handed it on a plate (looking at Richmond N yorks Rishi ! ). Funny that 80% of constituencies getting levelling up funds are tory...
Whole culture war. Singling out certain minorities to attack for purely political gain. In the 80s single mums, 90s benefit claimants, 2000s refugees, immigrants. FWIW I'm fairly gender critical but disliked the way they toadied round Trump and his abhorrent opinions/followers who pretty much wrote the culture war playbook.
So what stops you from voting for them ?

Seriously who would/ could vote for instead of the Conservatives and why? I

I think they are all as bad as each other.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/03/2023 21:06

I am technically a conservative with small c. I believe people should take responsibility, behave ethically, pay their workers properly etc. But people are absolute shits! I don't think it's acceptable to hold individuals responsible for stuff beyond their control. Children need food, clothes and education. We need a functioning justice system. We need free healthcare. So now I'm very much in the Tony Blair school of thought - what works is what's right, which isn't the conservative party.

Thedogscollar · 06/03/2023 21:07

Because in every political scenario you can think of they choose self interest over altruism.
After 12 years of wrecking, taking, lying, cheating and gaslighting the nation how anyone can vote for them is beyond comprehension.

ArcticSkewer · 06/03/2023 21:08

very little these days.

I thought I would never vote Tory but I can't vote Green/LibDem/Labour any more.

TheGoogleMum · 06/03/2023 21:09

They're incompetent liars. So corrupt. They look after their rich friends and arent bothered about the rest of us. Cutting public services too much.

I don't love labour's position on women but nothing can make me vote tory (maybe I'll spoil my ballot). Self ID has already been happening under the tories anyway even if it isn't law

BubziOwl · 06/03/2023 21:10

It's basic levels of care and respect for fellow human beings for me.

adrianmolesmole · 06/03/2023 21:12

LucyLeave · 06/03/2023 19:45

Everything about them and everything they stand for.

This.

UthredofBattenberg · 06/03/2023 21:12

Everyone else has put it far better than I can.

I believe even previous tory governments had a shred of decency.

This lot, they can't even seem to pretend they give a shit about anything other than making themselves and mates richer.

A blasé smash and grab of what little is left.

MotherOfRatios · 06/03/2023 21:13

The same reasons I can't vote Labour

-racism
-misogyny
-neither party cares about young people we are facing a housing crisis and no-one cares

PaulaPaola · 06/03/2023 21:13

Livelovebehappy · 06/03/2023 20:32

I vote Tory, because I want to and there’s no decent opposition. But I’m reading the thread with interest to see which party people vote for if not the Tories….because there really aren’t any other viable parties. It’s a shame because we need alternatives.

Oh come on! There won't be a country in five years time, if this lot get in again.

Literally, I could do a better job; I may not have skills or experience - but least I'm an honest, empathetic, compassionate decent human being.

Almost anyone would be better than the current government.

Figgygal · 06/03/2023 21:13

Literally everything
I used to vote for them when I was younger too to my shame

Amybelle88 · 06/03/2023 21:14

If I start listing I'll need a drink to calm me down.

Mainly the fact I have morals, though.

And they're cunts.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/03/2023 21:15

The are a bunch of immoral cunts who will always put party first, themselves and their mates second and the country and it’s people last. They are quite happy to stand by and let people die as long as they are making money out of it.

User135644 · 06/03/2023 21:18

Scienceandreason · 06/03/2023 19:43

Meh. The tories are terrible, yes, but they're the only available choice against Labour, Greens and lib dem.

Unless I spoil my ballot which I'm loath to do.

Mad how quickly people change. There was a huge Tory mania only a couple of years ago and now all of a sudden they're terrible. People are so fickle.

Imagine voting Labour.

ethelredonagoodday · 06/03/2023 21:19

LucyLeave · 06/03/2023 19:45

Everything about them and everything they stand for.

This.
Plus their total inability to actually govern in a positive, progressive way.

I've worked in the public sector under a variety of governments, and these are the absolute worst. Complete dearth of policy, regularly repeat announcing funding awards, totally unable to grasp how to actually get best use of scarce public resources...
they are useless.

RunTowardsTheLight · 06/03/2023 21:21

Brexit and all the lies.

User135644 · 06/03/2023 21:21

Mum2jenny · 06/03/2023 19:45

Agree, but I cannot vote for Labour or any of the others, so I either don’t vote, spoil the ballot paper or tick the Conservatives box…

I don't think anyone really likes the Tories that much in fairness, but there's a reason people always vote them in. There is no viable alternative and they're the natural party of government.

Starmer is channelling Blair by trying to appeal to Tory voters but i'm not sure it'll work. He's a snake.

PermanentTemporary · 06/03/2023 21:21

I'm just musing on Johnson saving money on his Christmas present list by sorting out a literal fucking peerage for his brother (the virtuous one, who wiped away a manly tear when stepping down from a job because of a conflict of interest that could have been seen from space BEFORE he took it), and a gong for his sister, and god help us a KNIGHTHOOD for his scumbag father. The rumour is that he was all set to hand out a shiny to Carrie too but was told it wouldn't be signed off.

I have a neighbour who was nominated for an MBE because of her lockdown work with deprived families. It delighted her to get it and I have no wish to spoil it for her, but how anyone with an ounce of self respect could touch one of these things after Johnson beats me.

boredwithfoodprob · 06/03/2023 21:23

I could write a book! So so soooooo many reasons and more why I never have and never will vote them.

MosquitoBuffet · 06/03/2023 21:23

They feather their own nests whilst systematically destroying the nests of normal people. They know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

They have been doing so, in varying degrees, since 1979.

Every decade they're in power I would always think 'surely they can't get any worse?' But they do.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/03/2023 21:24

My conscience.

I honestly can't understand anyone voting for them.

User135644 · 06/03/2023 21:24

scatterolight · 06/03/2023 20:08

That they don't "conserve" anything and are actually further to the left than New Labour were. I hope the party is utterly destroyed at the next election so another, actually conservative, party can come along.

"At last a True Tory budget"

Shulk · 06/03/2023 21:31

They are financially incompetent, entirely self-serving and corrupt, many do not have the best interests of the country at heart and I find most of the ‘culture war’ stuff extremely overblown and cynical.

Once upon a time, I thought that most Tory ministers were decent people who I disagreed with on political philosophy. Since Boris Johnson (and his purge of dissenters from the party), I believe that most of them are immoral, self-serving scumbags.

I don’t agree with any party on everything, but I will vote for whoever keeps the Tories out. The damage they have inflicted on this country in the last 10 years is unparalleled in peacetime. They are, by some distance, the worst of all available options.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/03/2023 21:34

Having a brain and a conscience.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/03/2023 21:35

I'm surprised no one has mentioned women losing rights to men following Theresa May's plan to allow people to change gender without medical checks.🤯
