To ask what stops you voting for the tories ?

Icandothattoo · 06/03/2023 19:38

For me
The unending shite that is brexit
Corruption and dishonesty, especially during the pandemic but not uniquely. And not just Johnson.
Making already deprived areas compete against each other for levelling up money whilst perfectly affluent tory voting areas are handed it on a plate (looking at Richmond N yorks Rishi ! ). Funny that 80% of constituencies getting levelling up funds are tory...
Whole culture war. Singling out certain minorities to attack for purely political gain. In the 80s single mums, 90s benefit claimants, 2000s refugees, immigrants. FWIW I'm fairly gender critical but disliked the way they toadied round Trump and his abhorrent opinions/followers who pretty much wrote the culture war playbook.
So what stops you from voting for them ?

Austerity and Brexit are the two big ones.

BramleyAppleHotCrossBun · 06/03/2023 19:54

A moral compass.

Beeinmybonnets · 06/03/2023 19:55

Their lack of ethics, morals and heart, their corruption, and sleeze, disregard for the law, the way they prop up the privilege of the few, their misogyny, racism and cruelty to immigrants.

LilLilLi · 06/03/2023 19:57

I have a heart.

MotherofPearl · 06/03/2023 19:57

Cherrysherbet · 06/03/2023 19:46

Everything they do, say and stand for.

Quite.

The question should be posed the other way around. What single redeeming feature (if any) of the Tories could make you bring yourself to vote for them?

Icandothattoo · 06/03/2023 19:57

@Iam4eels absofuckinglutely. Mired in shite. Just reading about Robert Jenrick mp. Now that does make your hair curl....Not saying Labour or Lib dems are that better but the corruption isn't as ironed in.

The way they are handling everything really - nhs, schools, libraries, process of refugees so they can actually live and progress rather than simply exist, youth, the list goes on.

PermanentTemporary · 06/03/2023 20:00

I've never voted Tory so I guess I don't count, but the most recent outrage of introducing discriminatory Voter ID laws to make it harder for people who don't vote Tory to vote. I don't understand how anyone with a sense of the importance of democracy can bring themselves to vote for the party that introduced that.

What's odd is that they are so busy pandering to racists that vote for them that they can't actually promote the few decent things they have done. They should be campaigning on the Hong Kong decision, that was excellent. But they don't talk about it because so many of their voters and party members would be horrified.

LoobyDop · 06/03/2023 20:05

Johnson hounded the decent ones out. There are still a few of them I agree with and don’t despise, but there aren’t many of them, and to stay in power they’re prepared to turn a blind eye to the most horrendous, brazen corruption and dishonesty. And so many of them are just… I don’t know if they don’t even recognise the dishonesty, or if they think it’s fine, or they don’t care because it achieves what they want- but it’s not ok. It stinks, and they’re ruining our country. We have virtually no health service, no police service… our state is falling apart in front of us and it feels as though we’re powerless.

DonnatellaLyman · 06/03/2023 20:05

Fundamentally I disagree with practically everything they do, say and stand for.

However, even if you did hold right wing views how could you vote for them? They have absolutely fucked the country economically to ameliorate their internal squabbles and they’ve even failed at that.

Every single one of us will be worse off than if Cameron hadn’t won a majority in 2015, and the worst isn’t over yet.

GlassBunion · 06/03/2023 20:07

Their innate corruption and 'jobs for the boys.'

Their inability to understand how real people have to live their lives under Tory legislation and policies.

They allowed people to buy their council properties and sell them for profit thus reducing Council housing stock.
They allowed property speculators to cash in.
They've not halted 'buy to let.'

So we have poorer people paying more than mortgages on substandard/inadequate properties.

So they need food banks.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/03/2023 20:08

The current cabinet and the cabinets since Theresa May are the most self interested, immoral, corrupt bunch!

Brexit is a mess but I don’t just blame brexit on the tories, many didn’t want it. The brexit blame goes back to Blair!

scatterolight · 06/03/2023 20:08

That they don't "conserve" anything and are actually further to the left than New Labour were. I hope the party is utterly destroyed at the next election so another, actually conservative, party can come along.

Mum2jenny · 06/03/2023 20:11

Who would you vote for in preference and why??

RufustheSpeculatingreindeer · 06/03/2023 20:12

The lies and corruption mainly

brexit was just an utter fuckup

the cuts to education, teaching and changes to the exam system would be the main thing for me

Mum2jenny · 06/03/2023 20:12

They are all lying bastards trying to feather their own nest imo. All politicians are as bad as each other.

RufustheSpeculatingreindeer · 06/03/2023 20:13

The current cabinet and the cabinets since Theresa May are the most self interested, immoral, corrupt bunch!

yes…

Cantseethewoodforthetree · 06/03/2023 20:17

I have regularly voted Tory in the past but I would rather cut my legs off with a rusty blunt saw with no anaesthesia. This current bunch aren’t what I would call
tories. They are BNP with posh accents and smart suits.

thry are so unbelievably thick, and tell the most obvious untruth and patronisingly think that we would believe them rather than see the glaringly obvious truth. But if you want a list:

the way they treat refugees. Appalling. We take so few people compared to other EU countries, and yet they make such a big song and dance about wanting to take even fewer people fleeing from actual
war zones who were living with no food and in fear of being bombed. Have some humanity!

Brexit

The knobs such as the Wetherspoons guy, and James Dyson, and Stanley Johnson. Typical sort of Tory. Truly odious individuals.

while we are on the subject of odious, Boris Johnson, Nadine Dorries, Micheal Fabricant, Jacob RM, Dominic Raab, Pritti patel, Stella Braverman, Lee Anderson, Matt Hancock, Gavin Williamson. Just so screamingly awful. All of them. So poorly qualified to represent our nation.

The lock down parties and the lies about it and the current sue grey treatment. Vile.

PPE corruption.

johnson Honours corruption.

i could be here all night so I’ll stop now.

lemmein · 06/03/2023 20:17

LucyLeave · 06/03/2023 19:45

Everything about them and everything they stand for.

This!

And how they lie continuously...but more annoyingly they tell stupid fucking lies - really blatant, silly lies- and expect everyone to just shush and accept their bullshit. They have zero respect for the public.

If you're gonna lie at least have enough respect for your audience to make them a little bit believable. I despise them, they treat everyone with contempt.

GoChasingWaterfalls · 06/03/2023 20:21

I mean at this point it would just be mortifying to actually vote for them, wouldn't it? They are so utterly corrupt and incompetent it's quite embarrassing to be a Tory.

I can't imagine anyone looks at the current situation and thinks "yep, let's have more of this please, it's all going marvellously", unless they're on some serious hardcore drugs.

user764329056 · 06/03/2023 20:21

All the corruption, they’re rotten to the core

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/03/2023 20:22

Pretty much everything above.
That they gave systematically gone about asset stripping the country in order to make themselves and their mates wealthier, baroness Mone being an example.

That they think they are cleverer than the people they are supposed to represent despite being pig shit thick, meaning they put out shit information updates like Sunaks efforts today, tell us to do one thing whilst they do another, break the law while in government, patronise us with their infantile language.

That they destroyed the economy overnight, failed to tax the fuel companies and refused inflation proof pay rises to our nurses, teachers, junior doctors. That bills have doubled so people can't afford to live.

That we need food banks in this country is a disgrace.

That my local Conservative MP doesn't bother replying to letters, is unable to say what she stands for, has done nothing for the constituency, voted for Sunak and refused to object to Johnson and the parties in Downing Street.

I could go on.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 06/03/2023 20:22

Literally nothing about them is for the good of the country or populace, it's entirely for the good of themselves and their cronies who can buy more affluence through bribes lobbying.

I'm waiting to hear which rich person linked to a front-bencher is going to make money out of either deporting or 'legally' transporting all the small boat asylum seekers. Probably both, at the same time.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 06/03/2023 20:23

Corruption and determination to downgrade and sell off public services to their buddies
Chronic underfunding of the NHS etc to achieve the above
Self-interest and nest-feathering ( see Boris Johnson nominating his father for a peerage)
Trumpian lies and re-writing of history ( such as the alleged 'protective ring' around care homes)
That's before I even get to Brexit and cruel immigration policies

Hell will freeze over before I vote Tory

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 06/03/2023 20:25

Also have an MP who doesn't seem to actually exist. I wrote to him when the food and farming bill re chlorinated chicken was going through parliament. Got a letter back from 'his office' (basically saying so sad, too bad) a fortnight ago.
