To ask what stops you voting for the tories ?

For me
The unending shite that is brexit
Corruption and dishonesty, especially during the pandemic but not uniquely. And not just Johnson.
Making already deprived areas compete against each other for levelling up money whilst perfectly affluent tory voting areas are handed it on a plate (looking at Richmond N yorks Rishi ! ). Funny that 80% of constituencies getting levelling up funds are tory...
Whole culture war. Singling out certain minorities to attack for purely political gain. In the 80s single mums, 90s benefit claimants, 2000s refugees, immigrants. FWIW I'm fairly gender critical but disliked the way they toadied round Trump and his abhorrent opinions/followers who pretty much wrote the culture war playbook.
So what stops you from voting for them ?

Everything.

Shoefleur · 06/03/2023 20:28

Moral integrity

Fimofriend · 06/03/2023 20:29

They're misogynistic, nepotistic kleptocrats.

Littlebluedinosaur · 06/03/2023 20:31

The fact they’re really only in it for themselves. Just look at Johnson nominating his father for a knighthood (and his brother for a peerage before that!).

Livelovebehappy · 06/03/2023 20:32

I vote Tory, because I want to and there’s no decent opposition. But I’m reading the thread with interest to see which party people vote for if not the Tories….because there really aren’t any other viable parties. It’s a shame because we need alternatives.

cardibach · 06/03/2023 20:32

The question suggests voting Tory is the default.
It’s never been a consideration for me. There is no way on this earth I would or could do it.

ScreamingBeans · 06/03/2023 20:33

Food banks.

cardibach · 06/03/2023 20:33

Jesus @Livelovebehappy
tories aren’t viable. Corrupt, lying, cheating, self serving.
nothing in the country even works as well as when they took over. Vote for anyone to their left. LD, Labour, Green, whatever. None of the, are less viable than the Tories even if you believe every right wing lie about opposition parties.
what is wrong with you?

SwedishEdith · 06/03/2023 20:34

Weird question. Surely it should "What would make you vote Tory?".

early30smum · 06/03/2023 20:35

Brexit

The cuts to education and the insistence of insane OFSTED inspections (obviously there should be inspections but the new framework is just too much, especially with the cuts and and often these inspections are really not a true reflection of a school).

The lying through the pandemic, the one rule for them one for us mentality

The state of the NHS

Their spending priorities

I actually used to vote conservative back in the day. Not a chance now.

Exasperatednow · 06/03/2023 20:36

Brexit.
Lack of talent - driven out by Johnson
I don't actually believe they give a shit about women (see child care and the terrible pay in sectors largely staffed by women)
Lack of integrity.
No decent strategies about pretty much everything.
What's happened since Grenfell and the poor people stuck in unsafe buildings.
Lack of a housing strategy.
Scapegoating immigrants as a way to divert attention (they don't want to solve this, because if they did they'd have a safe route option).
What they are doing and have done to the NHS.
Liz Truss - i mean how could they..
Austerity...and it's ongoing impact.
Complete Lack of stability...

I could go on...

JemimaTiggywinkles · 06/03/2023 20:37

Austerity. It targeted cutting support for poorer people rather than those with some wiggle room in their household budgets as a political choice (I find that morally unacceptable). It was also ineffective at sorting the economy in the wake of the banking crash (which is why it had to go on so long). And it left the country throughly unprepared for dealing with other economic shocks (eg brexit and pandemic).

The other stuff (corruption, lies, general cringe about terrible leaders) are why I really can’t stand this group of Tories. But austerity is why I can’t see myself ever voting Conservative.

Eh? of course there are alternatives. We don't quite live in a one party state despite the Tory party trying to rig the voting system in their favour.

TragicMuse · 06/03/2023 20:38

Absolutely everything! I'm not right wing and never have been, they don't espouse my ideals, morals, principles or beliefs.

DomesticShortHair · 06/03/2023 20:38

Because they’re basically Labour with a blue rosette.

ilovesooty · 06/03/2023 20:39

Mum2jenny · 06/03/2023 20:12

They are all lying bastards trying to feather their own nest imo. All politicians are as bad as each other.

Not again... 🙄

PinkFrogss · 06/03/2023 20:39

I’m not even sure where to begin…does MN have a character limit on posts?

I know. And this bollocks

Because they’re basically Labour with a blue rosette. 😳

Plimsongrey · 06/03/2023 20:44

All the above and they just have no integrity whatsoever. Morally vacant and they purged the party of the Tories who did have some integrity a few years back.

I voted for them once when I was younger and stupid (also from a very Tory family). After the past 7 years, I've vowed to never vote for them again. They truly make me sick to my stomach.

I voted Labour for first time ever last election. Something I'd never thought I'd do!

Fabled · 06/03/2023 20:46

Never have, never will.

So many awful, dim, nasty people in the party - proven time and time again to be quite without morals.

I hate what they’ve done to education, the NHS, housing… all public services.

Shameful.

Everydayimhuffling · 06/03/2023 20:46

@Livelovebehappy two pigs in a hat would be a more viable party. Certainly they would be less likely to steal or sell off everything that wasn't nailed down, and destroy everything else.

OMGitsnotgood · 06/03/2023 20:47

If you need to ask OP you can't have been following the news for the last few years

DashboardConfessional · 06/03/2023 20:48

I genuinely can't even express what I think of people who vote Conservative based on the absolute bollocks they're fed via the headlines. Or this idea they're the best of a bad bunch because they're supposedly more fiscally responsible. On what planet? I work in financial services as we are still mopping up after Liz Truss.

SerendipityJane · 06/03/2023 20:50

What is Toryism but organised spivvery? … No amount of cajolery can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party … So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.
