To refuse to go to a hairdresser

Suffolkmum81 · 06/03/2023 07:30

I know everything has gone up significantly but £150 for a cut and colour? How do people even keep this up every 6 weeks? I think it’s extortionate. I realise you have to cover over heads but still feel like people ar evening massively exploited

OP posts:
icelollycraving · 06/03/2023 07:33

I used to spend close to that 10 years ago. I earned more and my outgoings were less 🤷‍♀️
Now colour my hair myself and get it cut perhaps a few times a year.

Okunevo · 06/03/2023 07:34

A professional colour is a luxury, if you want a different hair colour there are home dye kits that are much cheaper.

Starlightstarbright1 · 06/03/2023 07:34

You can shop around dept where you are i pay ,£65 for cut and colour

Swiftswatch · 06/03/2023 07:35

It’s hardly exploiting people.
It’s a skilled job.
If you don’t want your hair cut or coloured by a hairdresser then don’t go.

daffodi · 06/03/2023 07:35

I pay £85 for a cut and colour and that seems eye watering. I just go less often, once every 4 months usually.

Nimbostratus100 · 06/03/2023 07:35

Don't go then, it is a luxury, it is your choice whether to go or not.

I don't think it is exploitation to charge high prices for luxuries!

No one needs to go to the hairdressers, and many people don't.

Sounds like you have been going every 6 weeks and now can't afford to

I have gone once a year for the past 30 years, and never had colour.

So you are living in a different world to one I have ever been in to even ask about this

Xrays · 06/03/2023 07:37

I spent £100 getting my hair coloured in a salon everyone locally recommended and to be honest I could have done it just as well myself at home with a box dye. So that’s what I’ll be doing from now on. (Admittedly this was just a one colour, all over permanent with a conditioning treatment afterwards so not anything fancy). I think people pay for the experience and luxury of it as much as anything else, which is fine if you can afford it.

Okunevo · 06/03/2023 07:37

I choose to keep my natural colour and go to the barber because I like short hair but hairdressers are expensive.

Motheranddaughter · 06/03/2023 07:38

I pay£95 for a cut and colour
I go every 6 weeks
I feel better if my hair is looking good

Magenta82 · 06/03/2023 07:38

I spend the money on the cut but do the colour myself at home. If you just want an all over colour it's really easy to do it yourself and I think it lasts longer. For highlights I got a cap and a friend did it.

The cut is worth paying for though

PictureConsequences · 06/03/2023 07:40

If it's well done, it's worth it. You wear your hair every day... My daughter went to a well known chain and came out looking like Garfield, I've found another hairdresser who charges around the same, and is excellent.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 06/03/2023 07:44

I switched from foils to balayage - the difference from your own hair colour is more subtle so you can go for ages in between and rock a stretched root.

Skyrimisveryrelaxing · 06/03/2023 07:56

Check to see if your local college has a hair and beauty department. The one near me has a full hair saloon. They also do beauty treatments, sports massage and have a steam room.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2023 08:00

Are you in London or a major city? That is a lot of money for a cut and colour. I pay £58.50 in a small market town in Yorkshire. DD pays less than £100 in Newcastle.

Brefugee · 06/03/2023 08:04

sorry, OP but my reaction is "lol, exploitation"

you use that word, i don't think it means what you think it means.

Howvery, hair is a very important part of our identity so i do have some (very limited) sympathy. You have choices here.

  1. Stop the colouring and embrace your natural colour? this is often easier with a new style
  2. use a box dye and still go for a nice salon wash/cut
  3. use a box dye and go for a dry cut (do they still do that) or one of those where they wash/cut, or wet it/cut and you dry yourself
  4. stop colouring and 2
  5. stop colouring and 3
  6. don't trainee hairdressers use models? that is usually cheaper but not without risk (I've only had good experience with that)
  7. different hairdresser and any combination of 1-5
  8. mobile hairdresser?
Calmdown14 · 06/03/2023 08:10

I bought a crea clip in lockdown (well an imitation version) and haven't been back. Watch the you tube videos and just take small bits so you can redo if it's not quite right!

I colour it myself but it's dark brown which is easier than blonde. It's also pretty wavy and a bit rubbish anyway so it doesn't make a particularly noticeable difference!

If I'd ever had great hair I'd probably feel differently but I hate the hairdresser and rarely like it when it's done until it's practically grown out.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 06/03/2023 08:16

@Suffolkmum81

Not sure how it's exploitation op

You generally pay more for the more experienced stylist as it is a skilled job remember

Overheads are

Rent
Rates
Water
Elec and gas
Stock
Insurances
Music licences
Nice drinks normally
And staff wages
Tax/vat/
Pension contributions
Holiday pay
Website costs
Payment machine and software costs

To name but a few

sanityisamyth · 06/03/2023 08:18

Don't colour it then? I've never put any colour in my hair and don't understand anyone spending vast amounts of money every few weeks but there are cheaper ways of doing things. A straightforward cut is adequate. If you must colour it, do it at home?

JaceLancs · 06/03/2023 08:20

I pay under £40 for root touch up and trim every 6 weeks

19lottie82 · 06/03/2023 08:21

I pay £125 for my hair but manage to get it down to once every three months.

Ohdearnotagain76 · 06/03/2023 08:21

I believe some colleges do cheaper days not sure how it works but guess their training but would be supervised, might be worth a call to college or training place. You might be able to get it cheaper if you have a junior do it at a salon.

Aprilx · 06/03/2023 08:21

I pay that, I might try and stretch to say 7 or 8 weeks. I am not being exploited as it is my choice.

Ragwort · 06/03/2023 08:23

I don't think you understand what the term 'exploiting people' means.

Colouring your hair is a luxury ... here's a suggestion-keep to your natural colour.

Minfilia · 06/03/2023 08:23

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 06/03/2023 07:44

I switched from foils to balayage - the difference from your own hair colour is more subtle so you can go for ages in between and rock a stretched root.

I did this too, and switched to a cheaper hairdresser!

Only problem is that I’m now so grey that it’s stopped making a difference 😁

KillingLoneliness · 06/03/2023 08:24

Last time I went to hairdresser was in 2021! They f*** up massively and had to refund me and I’ve not been able to afford to go back since so I’ve had to just try and grow it all out, I’m fed up with my hair looking like shit but I can’t afford to pay hundreds to fix it.
