To refuse to go to a hairdresser

I know everything has gone up significantly but £150 for a cut and colour? How do people even keep this up every 6 weeks? I think it’s extortionate. I realise you have to cover over heads but still feel like people ar evening massively exploited

It's up to you if you pay it. You're paying for their skill. Mines about £110 every 6 weeks but it doesn't bother me. I'm happy to pay for her, she's very good. You could always do it yourself if you don't like the price.

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 18:13

No, YOU are not unworthy! It's nothing personal against you.

Your services are simply not worth the price to many of us currently.

But that is often the tone

The posters who cut their own hair (as they are entitled to do) who are sure they do it as well as a trained professional. Some may, but quite a few I've seen definitely don't. The box colours that do the same job as salon colours (no they don't)

Of course all of that is fine. But diy-ers don't sneer at painters & decorators or plumbers. They just want to do it themselves. Whereas there is often a 'tone' on here (and in RL) when it comes to hairdressers

headstone · 06/03/2023 18:32

I get my hair cut every 3 to 5 years and it’s fine.

Okunevo · 06/03/2023 18:49

Nanny0gg · 06/03/2023 18:23

Not if you look at their hourly rate after overheads.

It's very skilled (despite all the 'I cut it myself and it looks like Nicky Clarke did it' brigade) so why shouldn't they be paid a reasonable amount. Their pay for the first few years is shit so I don't begrudge it.

How do their overheads make a difference to whether or not it's too expensive for me to afford? The barber manages to do an excellent job for much less.

It doesn't.

It's the attitude towards it that bothers me. People can go or not. Free choice.

And barbering is a different skillset. And mostly (not always) they can turn over more clients in the same timeframe

That's what I originally posted, that I CHOOSE to go to the barber. It's my free choice. The barber has the skills etc required to cut my hair well, they cut short hair like mine all day.

Okunevo · 06/03/2023 19:13

The shorter time I am in the seat at the barber is a bonus!

RaininSummer · 06/03/2023 19:15

If my 20 pound cut takes 15 minutes aka 80 an hour then it sounds a lot more than what I get paid per hour to be honest so I won't feel too sorry. I realize tax and chair rent etc has to be paid out if this so the 80 pounds likely becomes more like 50 but my pay is only around 13 an hour I think so if it cost more than 20 I probably wouldn't go at all.

GoldenFarfalle · 06/03/2023 19:16

I just wait until I go my home country for holidays (Poland). Here is too expensive.

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 19:20

But nobody is claiming that cutting or colouring your own hair produces the same results as hairdressers' - (actually I regularly trim my own fringe and think it looks good) - people are simply saying that they can't justify the high costs that hairdressers charge.

Some people may be content with less than 'perfectly' styled or coloured hair.

MarchingBand · 06/03/2023 19:49

Each to their own. For me it's money well spent. Whilst I get a cut every 6 weeks, I only colour every 3 months.

Ponderoveryonder · 06/03/2023 20:20

I scrapped the colour and get a ridiculously expensive but awesome cut twice a year.
It really is so expensive to visit a salon these days but a good hairdresser should be able to give you something low maintenance, even if you visit as infrequently as I do!

ScarletWitchM · 06/03/2023 20:29

Soddingcat · 06/03/2023 17:00

Ponderingwindow I agree
women are regularly advised on here how to earn more money and to try and upskill , yet on here hairdressers are regularly slated for putting prices up and being to expensive

My costs running a salon have rocketed and yes , I do think I deserve to earn well as have years of experience

The posters above acting all pleased that they get a cut for £5/8 /10 pounds , have you actually thought about the ethics of the low cost ?

I’ve put my prices up 4 times since lockdown as we were undercharging for years , as are lots of salons

VAT gets removed before I’ve even paid wages
the profit margins in a salon are very small unless you charge a lot
tubes of colour are around £10 each and I can use 3 on some clients with long hair

Last week I got a plumber out to the salon and he charged £160 for less than an hours work

Tradesmen seem to be able to charge high prices without people being outraged, it’s tolerated and expected because it’s men

Why do some of you see us unworthy of earning a good wage ?
Nobody is entitled to expensive hair colour / cut
Its a luxury , and we don’t have to be cheap so you can all afford it while we struggle to pay our bills

I agree with you. I’m not in the industry but totally understand that the cost incorporates not just the overheads but also the training courses and specialist tools you need to pay for. I think many people don’t appreciate that but wouldn’t question it if it was a different trade.

BentleyRhythmAce · 06/03/2023 20:35

I don't think you know what exploiting people means.

Irridescantshimmmer · 06/03/2023 20:52

That is why I bought a good pair of Japanese hairdressers scissors ( the type you unscrew to sharpen) and cut my own hair.

We all need to live, to heat our homes, feed ourselves and family in the middle of a cost of livong crisis.

Personally, I can not justify spending too much on haircuts for myself right now and I am pretty pleased with my own cuts!

My scissors are great though, really pleased with them. There are loads of instruction vids online too, if anyone is interested.

Reddahlias · 07/03/2023 07:42

I wonder whether lockdowns encouraged more people to cut and/or colour their own or other family members' hair? Saves a lot of money!

Suffolkmum81 · 07/03/2023 07:53

Before you make a judgment , I have been colouring my hair at home for the last 4 years as being a single parent I cant afford to go to a hairdresser: my daughter offered to pay for a treat for my birthday , so no I don’t live in different world. How rude and judgemental

It is a lot.
I think OP is having a moan and phrased this wrongly.
I don't understand why so many negative comments.
Unfortunately prices have gone up a lot. 😔
I think overheads for salons are a real drain on the business and they probably just about keep afloat.
It's very annoying and going to the hairdresser shouldn't be viewed as a luxury, it should be part of regular maintenance.
Not everyone can use home colouring kits successfully and I don't think many people can cut and style their own hair at home as well as a hairdresser could.
I suspect supermarkets regularly inflate prices to maintain high profits.
Hair salons put their prices up to keep the business open, I doubt they maintain the same level of profit they had two - five years ago.

Thankyou, I could of worded it better to be fair I was just genuinely shocked as I haven’t been for a good 4 years

I know what you mean about not going for a few years, then being in shock at the rise in prices. I'm paying more for a dry cut than I used to pay for a cut and blow. I've gone over to a belle color box dye. It's been cheaper to buy a high powered hairdryer, good brushes and use the John Frieda Brazilian range. Have a look at mobile prices, most are still reasonable.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 07/03/2023 08:09

Any hairdresser round here is 40 quid plus easily for a cut and dry.
I have a really good hairdresser who cuts my hair really well. I have decides to ditch the dye and see how I go with the grey coming through.

Desperatetime · 07/03/2023 08:26

I can't justify prices of £40 for wash and blowdry without a cut madness mine wouldn't look any different to me doing it at home.

Desperatetime · 07/03/2023 08:28

I'm actually treating myself today to a wash cut and blowdry £25.

Reddahlias · 07/03/2023 08:30

I disagree - unlike going to the dentist or optician, getting your hair 'dressed' is not a necessity but a luxury.

Catspyjamas17 · 07/03/2023 08:31

I always box dyed mine, £7. Hairdresser only produce the same effect or worse it takes bloody hours.

I've stopped colouring mine now though. There aren't half the grey hairs I thought there were and my hair looks better for leaving it alone - I just get it trimmed and blow dried regularly for £40.

KimberleyClark · 07/03/2023 08:39

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 15:02

I'm shocked as some of you are paying close to £1000 per year on your hair Shock

If I had that much money spare id rather go on holiday for a week or another memorable experience personally.

I don’t spend much on clothes, shoes, handbags or makeup. I’d rather spend it on my hair.
