To refuse to go to a hairdresser

I know everything has gone up significantly but £150 for a cut and colour? How do people even keep this up every 6 weeks? I think it’s extortionate. I realise you have to cover over heads but still feel like people ar evening massively exploited

I pay £50 for a hair cut, about once a year.

My hair is soo much healthier not being coloured or highlighted and I'm happy to embrace my greying hair. It looks healthy and shiny!

ElsieMc · 06/03/2023 15:01

Every time my dd goes, it has gone up. She was actually shocked this time as it was £160 for a colour and cut. She only goes every 6 months now. It is a shame because she does need an inbetween cut and she avoids this. I have tried to encourage her to go a little darker, nearer her own colour, but she prefers blonder. We are not in a major city, but a small NW market town.

I used to go there years ago but had an all over colour, came home and noticed I had ginger roots. I had to go back and have it redone. Never went again. Its hardly a luxury experience to have to sit around for hours whilst they correct their mistakes.

I have had a mobile hairdresser for years. They usually leave an upmarket salon locally and take most of their customers. I had one for twenty years but she called it a day. I have a new one and he is good as well and charges £20 for a cut and a brief dry. Not a salon experience I suppose but 9/10 I am happy.

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 15:02

I'm shocked as some of you are paying close to £1000 per year on your hair Shock

If I had that much money spare id rather go on holiday for a week or another memorable experience personally.

I do those things as well, it isn't either / or.

WorkOfTheDevil · 06/03/2023 15:27

I pay £68 for cut and roots every 4 weeks. It's a luxury I love though, I feel it's worth it for me.

In saying that, I used box dye during covid and it didn't look all that different! 😂

Ponderingwindow · 06/03/2023 15:35

hairdressing is a female dominated field and seeing women criticized for charging for their highly skilled labor always saddens me.

you don’t have to use their services.
there are plenty of cheap haircut places available who will give you a quick trim for a cheap price

You can also cut your own hair. That is what I do. I used to spend quite a bit on my hair, but I can’t use a salon anymore because of allergies. I invested in 2 kinds of decent quality scissors and now diy. I can’t do anything fancy, but I look presentable and my cuts are now essentially free (until my scissors need sharpening or replacement).

Wexone · 06/03/2023 16:22

@Reddahlias i go on holiday and spend that much on my hair too. That is my choice

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/03/2023 16:44

I've changed hairdresser to one who has planned the style into one that looks got as it grows out so I don't need to go back as frequently - she's working on 3-4 months.

Soddingcat · 06/03/2023 17:00

Ponderingwindow I agree
women are regularly advised on here how to earn more money and to try and upskill , yet on here hairdressers are regularly slated for putting prices up and being to expensive

My costs running a salon have rocketed and yes , I do think I deserve to earn well as have years of experience

The posters above acting all pleased that they get a cut for £5/8 /10 pounds , have you actually thought about the ethics of the low cost ?

I’ve put my prices up 4 times since lockdown as we were undercharging for years , as are lots of salons

VAT gets removed before I’ve even paid wages
the profit margins in a salon are very small unless you charge a lot
tubes of colour are around £10 each and I can use 3 on some clients with long hair

Last week I got a plumber out to the salon and he charged £160 for less than an hours work

Tradesmen seem to be able to charge high prices without people being outraged, it’s tolerated and expected because it’s men

Why do some of you see us unworthy of earning a good wage ?
Nobody is entitled to expensive hair colour / cut
Its a luxury , and we don’t have to be cheap so you can all afford it while we struggle to pay our bills

The lady I go to who cuts hair for £5.25, she’s a one woman band who owns the building her salon is in. Most of her money comes from renting out the two flats above it but there is also a constant stream of older ladies going in and out for hairdressing.

I’m sure she would put the prices up if it wasn’t viable, but this is an extremely deprived area so it probably wouldn’t be worth it to her as no one here has the money to pay high prices.

Soddingcat · 06/03/2023 17:18

But £5.25 is not even minimum wage .
shes practically giving it away ….

I can’t answer for her! I go in, she sprays my hair with water, she cuts the ends off and I am out the door ten mins later and I dry my hair off at home.

boboshmobo · 06/03/2023 17:34

Get a mobile one. Cheaper as less overheads

It depends on how many £5.25 haircuts she can do in an hour.

Also, if her costs are low she may still be making a little money, on top of her rental income.

Ludo19 · 06/03/2023 17:44

I now get my hair done at the local college. They're fully qualified, need the practice and there's always a tutor on hand if they need help. I was £40 for full head highlights cut and blow-dry. It's the best it's looked if I'm honest. I could easily be three times that in a salon for the same result.

Shes open three days a week and it’s always busy! She’s very popular and speedy.

Nobody is calling anyone unworthy or unworthy of doing well.

This discussion is about whether the very high costs of cutting & colouring your hair is worth it to posters, considering many are struggling with their costs of living.

Soddingcat · 06/03/2023 18:00

The general tone is that we are unworthy actually,
prices have to be high to earn an ok wage
Many posters as above talk about its way to high
priced .
Not being able to afford it is different, but the suggestions that it’s a rip off ect suggests tha You think we aren’t worth it

No, YOU are not unworthy! It's nothing personal against you.

Your services are simply not worth the price to many of us currently.

Go. Don't go.

Find one that's cheaper.

Do what you like - it's not obligatory

Personal choice.

I don't spend that much but my hair and appearance matters to me

Okunevo · 06/03/2023 07:37

I choose to keep my natural colour and go to the barber because I like short hair but hairdressers are expensive.

Not if you look at their hourly rate after overheads.

It's very skilled (despite all the 'I cut it myself and it looks like Nicky Clarke did it' brigade) so why shouldn't they be paid a reasonable amount. Their pay for the first few years is shit so I don't begrudge it.

LittleMrsPerfect · 06/03/2023 18:24

I pay £65 for cut and colour including tip!!

Which you still pay for! Your water and electricity and much more uncomfortable

Horses for courses. You want it, you pay. Nobody is forcing anyone to go anywhere.

cansu · 06/03/2023 18:28

You need to go elsewhere. Mobile hairdresser does mine beautifully for 70.00
