To refuse to go to a hairdresser

I know everything has gone up significantly but £150 for a cut and colour? How do people even keep this up every 6 weeks? I think it’s extortionate. I realise you have to cover over heads but still feel like people ar evening massively exploited

OP I am going to agree with you. It does seem expensive.
When you consider that if you have a colour much of the time is spent letting the colour take . You aren't in the chair ie; they can fit in other customers around you.I am not anywhere fancy but the cost of colouring alone 'from £75 or £110 etc. It used to take my hairdresser about 15 minutes to apply once mixed up.

I think a lot of hairdressers lost money in lockdown as did most people. But they might want to revisit their prices. If they were a bit lower I suspect more people would go.

I have really long hair which I haven't been to the hairdresser for over a year- pregnancy and such. It's grey, colour has run out, needed a huge trim and then a good colour. This cost me 315. I have gone cheaper before and regretted it. I'm in London central though and that's pretty much the price around here.

Mythicalcreatures · 06/03/2023 09:09

Can you colour closer to your natural colour? I get mine done every 4 months and that's enough ( I went more often but due to covid and then salon hols) I discovered 4 monthly is absolutely fine for my shoulder length, fairish hair

I disagree about them needing clients. I waited almost 2.5 weeks for my appointment that cost 315. No shortage of clients here.

How much were you paying for a cut and colour before?

Sunriseinwonderland · 06/03/2023 09:15

I have a balyage with my own colour at the roots with light blond over the greys at the front so it really only needs doing once every three months. It's £140 so I can spread the cost and it still looks really nice.

Trainstrike · 06/03/2023 09:17

I pay £15 for a dry cut every few months, there are other options available!

Dixiechickonhols · 06/03/2023 09:18

I pay £45 at a hairdresser for a cut and colour. I go back to town I used to live in - I time it when I need to go there anyway (deprived northern) if I had it done where I live now would be double or more.
I did box dye in Covid and it didn’t cover it. Took ages to sort at hairdressers after.
I hate being grey. I went really grey due to serious illness and it reminds me of that. I know some people my age late 40s who have embraced the grey and personally I think it really ages them.

ActDottie · 06/03/2023 09:21

dont go so often then, I used to go four times a year: twice full head and twice half head. Now I’m a darker shade I just do it at home.

I think £150 is about the going rate

CharodNeDu · 06/03/2023 09:22

Get a mobile hairdresser, less overheads.

Go for a hair colour that needs less maintenance. I have done this as my hair has changed in the 8 years I have had the same hairdresser. In that time my hair has been at least 3 different colours. I have had ombre from my natural colour to lighter, now with very grey roots I have a root touch up then every other appointment I have a halo of foils done to break it up. Root touch up with cut is £55.

Yikes...jump on the train to zone 3/4 and save about £200! I've been to expensive and cheaper salons. Expensive isn't necessarily always better. Although a very cheap one I went to was dire.

Zaliea · 06/03/2023 09:24

Yes, it's too expe dive for me to keep up the bleached hair (and no I can't do this at home, I've tried and end up either orange or with fried hair that snaps off... Or spots I haven't covered with bleach, it's very very hard just to bleach your dark roots yourself at home, especially with thick hair!), Or traditional highlights.

I've found it more cost effective to get a good balayage or sombre style colour, you can just go 2-3 times a year maybe then for some touch-up if you felt it was neeeded.

mondaytosunday · 06/03/2023 09:24

I've coloured my hair since late teens (started going grey then). I pay £5-8 every 8-10 weeks. L'Oréal.
Most people going every six weeks are only getting roots done and so cheaper that £150 I would have thought.

A really sensible business looks at the money it isn't making as well as the money it is. Even more footfall is better than less.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 06/03/2023 09:31

£150 for 3/4(?) hours of someone's time isn't a lot. About 50% of that will be cost and overhead.

KimberleyClark · 06/03/2023 09:36

I spend that on my cut and colour and think it’s worth every penny. Salon colours are way more conditioning than box ones. And my stylist is brilliant at cutting and colouring. He’s the best one I’ve ever had

SunsetBlue · 06/03/2023 09:37

Headmasters are a chain and do a 'me day makeover' offer - I think it's £105 for a cut and colour. They often have half price colour sales too. If you need a trim, get a £25 standby appointment.

I'm not a massive fan of HM because you can't choose your stylist this way, but if you go with very specific pictures of what you're after it'll be fine.

BourbonBon · 06/03/2023 09:38

I agree, a cut and colour has gone from £65 to £95 and I can’t justify that every 6 weeks. I cut myself a fringe and bought a box dye for £5 - I’ll maybe go for a trim in a few months but other than that I’m staying DIY

Parker231 · 06/03/2023 09:41

Try using eSalon - I used their products during lockdown - very impressed.

It is.

I pay £12 every 8 weeks for a dry cut.

CherryHouse · 06/03/2023 09:52

Thanks for the college suggestion @Skyrimisveryrelaxing!! I’ve just looked up my local college and they’ve got a beauty salon with absolute bargain prices for mani/pedi/facial/blow dry etc 😊

And that’s another reason, who wants to sit staring into a mirror for 3 hours, not me. I don’t have time for that shit

Cosyblankets · 06/03/2023 09:53

No one is forcing you to go
No one is forcing you to go to that particular salon
Shop around.
Or do your own

Capturetotalelotion · 06/03/2023 09:53

YABU. My lovely hairdresser has just had to close her shop because she can afford to run it anymore. It’s tough out there for small businesses.
