To refuse to go to a hairdresser

I know everything has gone up significantly but £150 for a cut and colour? How do people even keep this up every 6 weeks? I think it’s extortionate. I realise you have to cover over heads but still feel like people ar evening massively exploited

@Suffolkmum81

Not sure how it's exploitation op

You generally pay more for the more experienced stylist as it is a skilled job remember

Overheads are

Rent
Rates
Water
Elec and gas
Stock
Insurances
Music licences
Nice drinks normally
And staff wages
Tax/vat/
Pension contributions
Holiday pay
Website costs
Payment machine and software costs

To name but a few

@wtfisgoingonhere21 although men's hair cuts are typically half the price of women's.

How are the overheads different? Hairdressers charge what they think they can get away with.

I used to have very short hair and I got really pissed off with trying to find somewhere that wouldn't charge me double based on what's in my pants.

Timeforchangeithink · 06/03/2023 08:25

I don't understand why people waste time complaining about things they can control. You don't want to pay it then find another option. Box dye, college cuts etc. Life's too short to waste time on things like this. The cost doesn't bother me it's the time spent in the salon that I don't like. So I use a box dye and get my hair cut at the barbers even though it's shoulder length.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 06/03/2023 08:30

Men’s hair takes significantly less time to do and is unlikely to include colouring. DH goes to a female barber, he’s in and out in 15 minutes. I’m at the hairdressers for two hours. I don’t want a quick spray with water and a pair of clippers, it used to take two minutes to clip my lovely dear dads few hairs at the back of his head and a polish on top!

midgemadgemodge · 06/03/2023 08:30

Men's hair cuts are often easier and quicker

Half the time half the price

Squamata · 06/03/2023 08:32

@midgemadgemodge @TerfIngOnTheBeach mens haircuts are often but not always simpler. Many salons, a man and a woman could turn up needing identical haircuts and the man pays much less.

I have a mobile hairdresser and they are generally much cheaper. I pay £8 for a haircut.

DaisyDays123 · 06/03/2023 08:39

I was charged £100 for a wash and trim last time I went to the hairdressers…I haven’t been for 6 months now because it’s just not worth it.

TheDanceOfTheTomato · 06/03/2023 08:39

Exploiting people 😂

It's expensive, but is also not a necessary, so pay it or don't. They set the price according to costs and what the market is willing to pay.

Murraydeservedit · 06/03/2023 08:41

Move to a dump like I did.

You have to dodge used needles in the park, but the hairdresser down the road from me does a dry cut (well, you know they spray your hair with water from a bottle and you leave with it still damp) for £5.25

If you bring in the box of dye, she will put the colour on for £7.

JunkinDonuts · 06/03/2023 08:41

My hair is very long ( hip length ) I love going to the hairdresser.
I go every 4 weeks for a deep conditioning treatment which costs £15, that includes wash and blow dry.
I have the ends and my fringe trimmed every 8 weeks, which also costs £15.
I don't colour it.

HoboSexualOnslow · 06/03/2023 08:43

It's not extortionate, it's just out of your budget.

borntobequiet · 06/03/2023 08:46

No one has to go to a hairdresser. Similarly no one has to buy expensive food, clothes or holidays. Less costly, but acceptable, things may be available.
Cut your coat according to your cloth, as used to be said.

Comedycook · 06/03/2023 08:47

No one's being exploited.... don't be daft.

It is very expensive though. I don't think getting your hair done should be a luxury that only well off people can afford. It's basic grooming. But this is the shitty country we now live in where the most basic of things are now unaffordable.

Branster · 06/03/2023 08:49

It is a lot.
I think OP is having a moan and phrased this wrongly.
I don't understand why so many negative comments.
Unfortunately prices have gone up a lot. 😔
I think overheads for salons are a real drain on the business and they probably just about keep afloat.
It's very annoying and going to the hairdresser shouldn't be viewed as a luxury, it should be part of regular maintenance.
Not everyone can use home colouring kits successfully and I don't think many people can cut and style their own hair at home as well as a hairdresser could.
I suspect supermarkets regularly inflate prices to maintain high profits.
Hair salons put their prices up to keep the business open, I doubt they maintain the same level of profit they had two - five years ago.

Donnashair · 06/03/2023 08:51

No one is being exploited. If you don’t want to pay it, find somewhere cheaper or don’t have it done. It’s not an essential service.

Surely wanting Hair dressers to work next to nothing, is exploitative.

i don’t even see the issue, anymore, with mens be women’s cuts as most places are changing to charging how long it takes rather than distinction between men and women.

Brefugee · 06/03/2023 08:52

It's very annoying and going to the hairdresser shouldn't be viewed as a luxury, it should be part of regular maintenance.

the maintenance is a cut now and again if you really want to keep a style/can't do your own split ends.

Everything over and above that: styling (after washing), colours, treatments - are all luxury and fripperies. We all have to cut our cloth.

And a business has to be realistic about a) their overheads and b) what they can charge.

Or should hairdressers, like so many other tradespeople seem to be expected to do, train for years and then be moaned at that they have learned how to correctly price their time.

(anyone who can sew who has had the "can you hem these" or "i'll give you 50 quid to make me a wedding dress" knows how this works)

Hankunamatata · 06/03/2023 08:52

I don't. I'm growing my hair, doing home colour.

viques · 06/03/2023 08:53

I hadn’t realised that attendance at a hairdresser was compulsory . I’ve been going because I am happy to pay someone to do my hair and enjoy the experience, not because I was being ticked off a list.

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/03/2023 08:53

I don't bother with colour and my cut and blow dry is £40.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 06/03/2023 08:55

My hair is grey and natural brown. I haven't dyed it for years because of cost.

I get it cut 2-3 times a year. The cheapest place near me is £40 and she does a good job. All I need are the ends cutting off. I'm growing out my blunt bob.

Everything is going up in price. I don't blame the hairdressers, they have increased costs to cover. These have to be passed onto the customer. They also had a shit time during the pandemic so give them a break.

Ragwort · 06/03/2023 09:00

There is a huge difference between 'basic grooming' and having an expensive cut and colour - which is clearly a luxury.

My hair is clean, neat and tidy. And it's natural colour. Every eight weeks I get a 'free' cut and blow dry at our local salon, very well supervised and at least one (more if I wanted) decent cup of coffee. Obviously I leave a tip.

whistlingkettles · 06/03/2023 09:02

£7.99 for a home due and £20 every 8-12 weeks for a trim. Easy! 😊

Gincan · 06/03/2023 09:02

I'd shop around for a cheaper place. I paid £65 for cut, colour and blowdry recently. We're in the South East so not a cheap area. There is a huge variation on what different salons charge and I don't think the expensive ones do it any better than the cheap ones in my experience

curlymom · 06/03/2023 09:03

Some hairdressers have a day with half price colour which might help.
I also think prices are too high but I used box dye before embracing my natural. There are many options

I wish a trim cost me £20. Last cut cost me £47. High street salon in untrendy part of suburban London.
