Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

Yes, no-one ever proposed safe routes before. They came up with it all by themselves 🤡🤡🤡

Ah that clown emoji. How is the level of debate from Labour supporters always so shite.

People from Hong Kong are much more likely to be productive and law-abiding than people from Syria are.

jgw1 · 07/03/2023 18:00

Why did the government decide in 2021 that they could all move here, and not in any of the previous 24 years since British rule ended in HK?

Surely if they had always had that right it would not have needed a new visa scheme in 2021?

You need to go and actually read about this. Schemes are regularly amended with updated ones. For example, we have always had work visas. The recent law changes in 2016 and process for them doesn’t meant they did not exist before 2016.

Florenz · 07/03/2023 18:03

Do you have any evidence to support that assertion?

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 07/03/2023 18:05

jgw1 · 07/03/2023 17:50

Does anyone know why the government wants a cap of 20,000 asylum seekers a year, but 2 years ago introduced a scheme that would allow 2.9million people from HK to move to the UK?

Because the tories need to be able to say they've "been tough on immigration" to disperse the froth they've whipped up and keep their voters happy. But they also know they need migrants to achieve their growth targets and plug the gaping holes in the workforce and know that the vast majority of voters who won't look any further into things than what they see in the Mail/Express/Facebook.

Feel free to skim scroll past certain posters like you previously said you did. Or was that not true? 😃

IClaudine · 07/03/2023 18:06

I totally welcome safe routes. However, I want to see the detail first, because that is where the devil 😈 usually lurks. Like a pp set out when describing the hurdles a relative faced to get a visa, things are not always what they seem.

Springchicken75 · 07/03/2023 18:09

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2023 17:58

Even with safe routes I suspected posters wouldn’t be happy.

I don’t know how anyone can prefer trafficking option.

I always wonder who the posters even are. Maybe they don’t even live here, but if they do where are these hallowed places with plentiful houses and infrastructure to cope with the Labour free for all immigration policy?

Are they so welded to their virtual signalling that they can’t work out things like ‘impact’ not just on the country but on the disillusioned migrants themselves?

It is absurd that their only answer is to increase the flow of people, even though we can’t cope with the numbers we have now?!

Maybe they are millionaires living rurally whom have no idea what the hard reality is like in places like Dover, Ramsgate etc.

There seems to be no reasoned debate. It’s like zealotry. Brain washed hard left making the case for the U.K to let anyone live here it’s alarming.

Labour have no chance of actually winning the election on this coming backdrop of thousands of arrivals and I assume drownings.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 07/03/2023 18:11

Springchicken75 · 07/03/2023 17:54

This law is going through, and so will the plan for safe routes. It’s a balanced plan backed by most of the country.

Out of interest, why are you so keen to support the traffickers? Have you considered the ethics of your stance?

A balanced plan with no timeline or detail of how they're going to enact at least half of it...really??

Tell you what, if you transfer me £1k tonight, I'll transfer you back £5k but only once my bills have reduced significantly. Sounds like a good plan? When can I expect your cash??

I usually do it is true. But I admit trying to wade through some of them just got to me at that point.

I get it’s the way posters go on on the Brexit board. Not that I go on there. But it’s actually more interesting debate without all that.

Anyway one of my first posts was about voters accepting a reasonable amount of people processed in safe routes at same time as stopping boats, so I don’t feel far off.

Apparently Sweden and Italy are going to copy us and have far right governments.

What do you mean "going to"
We've already got one in Italy.

I live in a mansion in the US. I have no ties to the uk but I think it should take far more migrants. It doesn’t actually affect me, it’s just the principle.

"Labour have no chance of actually winning the election on this coming backdrop of thousands of arrivals and I assume drownings."

Tory election policy in a nutshell.

Waste 13 years not fixing a problem. Waste Parliamentary time on 10 individual unworkable and impractical Acts.
Solve nothing.
Ramp up the crisis and empty rhetoric and then use crisis to try to win an election.
Governing at its finest.

Can you explain Labour's policy to me? I haven't seen much beyond a few hints of minor changes to the points-based system, and a little on illegal immigration deterrence from Yvette Cooper.

Because I might buy some houses there at some point, I haven’t decided.

caringcarer · 07/03/2023 18:17

It won't matter if they come as bill states they can immediately be sent away to third country or returned to home country.

Hey! Hold on a second, I started on this thread by proposing a one in, one out or a reducing the elderly population system and the anti-immigration portion of this thread went into meltdown. Apparently it's only acceptable to dehumanise people if they're asylum seekers.

Blastosis · 07/03/2023 18:18

Nimbostratus100 · 06/03/2023 07:41

we need an entirely new system

WE need people worldwide to apply to the UN for refugee status, and the UN to allocate them to a country

We would then get a fairer allocation of refugees

( mabe about 50x what we currently have)

and everyone around the world who can reach a UN official has a fair chance of getting refugee status

Genius. Was this your idea, @Nimbostratus100 and if so why aren’t you in the Cabinet?

Yes it will be very quick, Labour has no plan whatsoever published or unpublished. The fact is what they intend to do is so unpalatable to the electorate they have decided to go silent on the issue.

inky1991 · 07/03/2023 18:18

These migrants are already coming to the UK from a safe country though. Why do so few people get this?

Agreed. You guys need to make Britain even more unattractive so no-one bothers. No-one can say the government isn’t trying on that front.

ilovesooty · 07/03/2023 18:20

@Springchicken75 i look forward to seeing your link to Labour's free for all immigration policy
