Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

But are they coming here illegally in dinghys crossing the channel at a rate of several hundred per week and then expecting to be housed by the U.K. and pushing those U.K. residents who are in need of council accommodation further down the list.

What part of the legal status of asylum seekers don't you understand ( despite the government's efforts to override it)?

Why not apply to come to this country legally if they have links here. Even if this is from France or Germany or whatever the first safe country they get to.

Because there are no options for them to do so. You have to be on UK soil to be able to apply.
The UK removed the safe routes options.

Exactly. It's really hard work trying to convey this, isn't it?

Yes, but very important to continue to do so.

Europe is watching very very carefully and will probably follow suit, as and when the law is implemented successfully.

Depends what you mean by 'successfully'. It won't stop the boats, but they know that. It's not why they're doing it.

Most people 100% support the millions that have arrived from Ukraine, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. We need to care for these people first! Most are still living in B&Bs and we are beyond stretched in every area.

Immigration should be suspended until we are in a position to offer families a real chance of a new life and not one room where they rot for years. Criminal gangs from Eastern Europe are not ‘refugees’ but people traffickers and drug dealers. This country needs to stand up to the trafficking m, resettle the genuine refugees and pause ALL immigration until the situation is fully under control.

None of this will stop the boats.

Springchicken75 · 07/03/2023 13:25

This is why I can never vote for Labour. They have no idea how bad the situation is, and are way too weak.

Hopefully it will work.
All countries have the right to control their borders and know who resides within.

Australia managed it. Whether we have to go as far I guess we’ll see. Voters will keep pushing for results.

It most certainly will work. Who is going to risk a life time ban from applying for asylum and being sent to Rwanda? Seriously it will work.

Do you think at any point voters will notice that all this tough talk hasn't produced any reduction in the number of migrants?

Biker47 · 07/03/2023 13:29

Hopefully it does something, but I doubt it, the people traffickers will still stick them on the boats, hoping to get them in so that they can get them into the black economy and work off the debt they owe to the traffickers.

This scheme will fail and the tories will poll even worse. There's a reason Braverman's personal ratings are abysmal even though she talks directly to the base.

Are there other international laws you would rip up as well?

Is it also acceptable to not follow domestic laws I don't like?

Do you know how many we've sent to Rwanda so far?

You're not going to like the answer.

Springchicken75 · 07/03/2023 13:32

Anyway I hope it goes through. I hope it works, and perhaps the luvvies on here can bear this in mind when they are yelling next time about the lack of housing, GP apps, school places, hospital beds, traffic etc.

Every single person that is granted legal asylum here needs to be cared for properly. We don’t have limitless space and resources although for some strange reason they never address that small point.
