Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

So have Labour come up with a better plan?

(Apart from "let's-throw-open-the-floodgates-and let-all-the-human-trash- that-no-other-country-wants-come-here-because-Tony-Blair-did-it" )

I'm all ears.🙄

Do you have some sort of issue with being able to process and understand information?

The Tories have been in power for over 12 years. In that time they have constantly proclaimed they will "get tough on illegal immigration", they even took us out of the EU to "take back control" and yet the numbers have more than doubled under their governance.

Why do you (and others) fall for the same lie over and over and over and over and over????

The tories could begin sorting out "illegal immigration" tomorrow if they wanted to. All they have to do is open up safe routes to claim asylum and properly fund the asylum process so that it operates quickly and efficiently. Just doing that would reduce "illegal immigration" by 70+%, straight off the vat.

But he tories do not want to sort out illegal immigration, why the fuck would they?? It's their go to topic to sow division and distract the public from their ineptitude and corruption, and as an added bonus it makes their friends millions every year.

Of course if they did sort out the "illegal immigration crisis" then many people would have to admit that it's not so much "illegal immigrants" that they have an issue with but with people they consider undesirable (aka dark skinned people) moving here. And please don't pretend that that doesn't play a part in people's objections. When talking about immigration I've never once heard someone moaning about people coming here from Australia, America, Canada, Norway, etc.

Notonthestairs · 07/03/2023 12:12

So the same Government that for the last 13 years has been unable to either swiftly process arrivals or remove those who have their application denied will suddenly become super efficient at detaining, processing (some processing will still be required) and removing?

And this will all cost less than it does now?

Sure.

My American husband has. And I have too before people realised my husband is an immigrant. Along with other xenophobic comments like “why are Americans so stupid and rude?” And “Hate how this country is being Americanised.” Or “Bloody yanks, more money than sense” And “Aren’t all Americans gun mad wife beaters?”

Well that’s a bit blinkered - as someone from one of those countries listed you’re mistaken. I’ve been here a couple of decades so not much of an issue now, but no you’re incorrect based on experience.

Kennykenkencat · 07/03/2023 12:23

But are they coming here illegally in dinghys crossing the channel at a rate of several hundred per week and then expecting to be housed by the U.K. and pushing those U.K. residents who are in need of council accommodation further down the list.

Spot on.

The problems in the UK are much more to do with ultra-rich people flying across continents in private jets, than asylum seekers crossing the channel in small boats.

The new legislation is an admission of failure - there's no legal way we can stop these people arriving, so let's create a loophole by putting a legal responsibility on the SoS that trumps the HRA and various international treatise...

They might as well have added a paragraph at the end that says 'if all else fails, its fine to machine gun the boats as they're crossing....'

Is that why Truss went to look at migrants from a helicopter?

No body needs council accommodation they want it because it's cheaper. Plenty of private landlords around now.

Twitter link is interesting but claiming that Albanians or Syrians etc have links with this country is not true - they have not been with U.K. military or have familial links or have fluent English.

Wow, that's impressive. You've assessed over 24,000,000 people and evidenced that none of them have family ties to the UK, none have ever served or worked for out military in any capacity and none speak fluent English.

You should really put a tender into the home office because whatever system you are using to assess individuals linguistic skills and work / family history is far superior to anything they're using.

"There is no scarcity of resources"

"There is no shortage of housing"

Yes lie, lie, lie, nothing to see here get, you don't get a say, back in your corner and be distracted by envy of the 1% while this continues to get done

^ we've actually all seen enough of this to last a lifetime, quite often from people in authority or opposition.

As people skip meals, can't get medical treatment, can't turn the heating on, and the effects around them because the country is on its knees, it isn't very interesting to see the same old story trotted out - what is a lot more interesting is why it is happening.

Hey, you'll get no argument from me that the UK is filled with xenophobic arseholes but please do share a recent example of where the government or anti-immigration group have specifically stated they want to limit migration from Western/Developed world counties.

Everything I've seen over the last 10 years or so has focused on stopping people from Africa, the Middle Eastern, Eatern Europe (for a while) and sometimes India (although that has died down since the government signed a partnership with India to make it easier for migrants from there to move here).

Because immigration from developed countries is of high quality and benefits us, most of it work related to do and sponsored. Not rocket science is it?

DuncinToffee · 07/03/2023 12:53

And refugees aren't educated and/or skilled?

HamBone · 07/03/2023 12:54

@Thebestwaytoscareatory Legal immigration to the UK for people not seeking asylum a highly complex process, it takes time and involves alot of checks. I’ve done it the other way migrating to the US and have looked into moving back to the UK with my American DH. He has a needed skill set, but it’s still a complex process and would take months.

Same with me coming to the US-background checks, interviews, months of waiting, etc. Borders don’t magically open.

'France is a safe country'

Have a listen to this video clip for an explanation

twitter.com/ZoeJardiniere/status/1628304145118625792?t=S4TgcxBrql7NW0m1dQeseg&s=19

If they really are refugees, why don’t they have to stay in the first safe country they reach?”

“Why don’t they just claim asylum in France?”

Here is my answer, once & for all. To Jonathan Gullis, and to everyone else who ever wondered.

But if they have links to this country why are they “fleeing for their lives” whilst leaving their female relatives behind in such a dangerous country

If the country is so dangerous then why leave female relatives behind

Why not apply to come to this country legally if they have links here. Even if this is from France or Germany or whatever the first safe country they get to.

.

HamBone · 07/03/2023 12:56

@DuncinToffee I’m sure many are, there needs to be a better immigration process in place.

I'm sure those risking their lives crossing the channel in boots would rather wait 12 hours in A&E vs hope MSF comes to them. They would rather be comfortable under a blanket in a temped Britain, than warm in a Syrian tent city.

The problem in Britain is we have come to see 1st world problems as the worst life can be.

We are in the top 5-10% it's my off day and I am sat in the house with a blanket as I don't want to turn the heating on. It's not that we can't afford it, it's the fact I don't want to give money to Russia to continue bombing Ukraine. In 2022 as a country we spent 2.2billion on Russian oil/gas I would rather freeze than contribute to that. When DS gets in from school I will light the fire as it's got to snow.

Yes they could stay in France, however what about those who already have friends and family settled in Britain. All this will do is cause bigger divisions between born Britain's and the immigrant communities.

Suella Braverman: "There are 100 million people around the world who could qualify for protection under our current laws. Let's be clear. They are coming here."

Straight from the Vote Leave playbook about Turkey joining the EU and then the entire population coming to Britain.

Because there are no options for them to do so. You have to be on UK soil to be able to apply.

So an American or Australian or Italian etc person who is coming here to live as they have family here has to enter the country illegally then apply to stay?

What is the safe and legal route for a 16-year-old orphan escaping an African warzone to join their sibling who is legally in the UK?

NewPatioPlease · 07/03/2023 13:07

For the all posters saying they would be okay with women and children, but have issues with men being allowed asylum, why?

Are you only happy for women to come if they are with children, or are single ones allowed? Don’t men have the right to safety or a good life ? Do they have to stay and fight in wars that they don’t want to take part in, because they are men and it’s “cowardly”
to say they don’t want to kill others or be killed themslevs?

Equality is really important. Yet, for some reason men are looked down upon and judged for seeking asylum.
