Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

My country takes everyone who applies who meet the criteria for refugee status, has safe routes, provides free transport into the country from neighbouring countries, and allows family reunification. But then we haven't sold our souls ro right wing extremists.

Where do you live?

Would you be willing to say which country this is?

Fladdermus · 07/03/2023 11:18

Unless you willing to take everyone who applies? If it reaches millions is that ok?

If it's saving their lives then yes, take in millions if needed. How many of those millions would you choose to leave to die?

Mamamia7962 · 07/03/2023 11:20

Fladdermus - Which country do you live in?

Onnabugeisha · 07/03/2023 11:20

Country @Fladdermus so we can look up your asylum stats. How do we know what to advocate for here if you won’t share a model system that works?

DuncinToffee · 07/03/2023 11:21

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2023 11:08

These kind of posts don’t really solve the issue though. I’m sure they feel good but that won’t address the practical reality wrt people displaced in large numbers.

Unless you willing to take everyone who applies? If it reaches millions is that ok?

Not all asylum applications are successful so no we don't just take everyone who applies.

The government has only managed to return 21 individuals, who came from France, out of 20,000 in the last 2 years... & that's because they don't have return agreements with other countries.

That is the government's failure but it is easier to make aylum seekers the problem.

Catspyjamas17 · 07/03/2023 11:23

Funny that we seem to lack any control of our borders after leaving the EU so that we could control our borders. Will Brexiteers ever admit how they have buggered up this country?

Moonicorn · 07/03/2023 09:47

Ok me personally:

I would have a cap of around 20,000 women and children a year. Teen boys would need bio checks to confirm age first if there’s any doubt they’re over 18. I would set up collection points around Italy/Turkey with information printed in the language of their countries of origin, about what they can expect from the U.K. in terms of welfare support, counselling and accommodation, and what would be expected from them in terms of a view to working and sending their children to school after a 3-6 month ‘settling in’ period. It would then be their choice whether to apply. No men accepted while women and children are still homeless and unsafe, and nobody accepted from countries without active conflict.

I would be happy for taxpayer’s money to fund this scheme, as if we can integrate children and educate them early enough I see them as a long term asset to the country. Women have suffered enough frankly.

@Moonicorn in the 18 months after the scheme for HK BNO passport holders and their dependents to move to the UK opened over 120,000 people took advantage of it. That is a far larger number than your suggested cap, or the number of migrants taking small boats across the Channel. Are you has appauled by these migrants as those crossing the Channel in small boats?

There are potentially 2.9million more Hong Kongers who now have an absolute right to move to the UK.

Fladdermus - But this is about boat crossings. France is a safe country. Are you for people coming across in boats?

'France is a safe country'

Have a listen to this video clip for an explanation

If they really are refugees, why don’t they have to stay in the first safe country they reach?”

“Why don’t they just claim asylum in France?”

Here is my answer, once & for all. To Jonathan Gullis, and to everyone else who ever wondered.

Yes. Absolutely I'm for people coming across in boats. Excellent suggestion for stopping the traffiking. P&O have boats crossing every hour.

The only people who are in favour of boat crossings are those who refuse to provide safe routes.

Do you share your house with refugees already? Out of interest

Also which country did you mean? It would be useful to look at stats

TrinnySmith · 07/03/2023 11:37

Twitter link is interesting but claiming that Albanians or Syrians etc have links with this country is not true - they have not been with U.K. military or have familial links or have fluent English.

Yes I do. Plus I work with them, supporting them with language and with accessing the services and support they need. How about you?

Well if you were getting a cut of the profits from people smugglers then you too would do all you could to ensure it lasted.

Much as anyone who backs the "war on drugs" can only be making money from illegal drugs.

Prove me wrong.

Interesting;
Sweden launches global campaign against migration

As part of its intention to reduce immigration to Sweden, the government, supported by the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD), stated that the country needed to invest more in information efforts abroad.
The campaign will include targeted communication to foreign editorial offices and news agencies as well as to foreign embassies in Sweden.
“This government was elected, among other things, on a mandate to create a paradigm shift in migration policy. This requires many major changes”, said [migration minister] Stenergard at the press conference.

I'm afraid I do not understand the point you are trying to make.

Where is your country though? Was it a too bold claim, that’s fine easily done.

Go to the 'When compared against EU+ countries' section If you want to compare UK and Sweden.

Except that report is outdated as it is only comparing first decisions on 2021 applications, not final decisions and the data was accessed in Aug 22. You need to go to EU stat current figures which were updated last month and look at the # of final decisions to get the true picture.
