This is abuse. What kind of parent takes their baby to a show like this?

I wouldn’t let them watch Drag Race either. It’s not appropriate. Just because something is on before 9pm, it doesn’t mean that that I suddenly have to think it’s fair game.

TheKeatingFive · 06/03/2023 11:01

What kind of parent sits their infant / toddler down to watch Ru Paul's drag race?

There is any amount of suitable content and entertainment produced for children. Why on earth would anyone prioritise this instead?

Because they are cool.

Some of my 8 year olds friends watch it with their mums and talk about it. Dd isn’t remotely interested, but I wouldn’t allow her to watch it anyway.

What's the difference to them watching RuPaul's drag race? Which is on before the watershed.

A drag show is not a sex show. It's acting, comedy, clowning, dancing, face painting, dressing up, music, bright colours.

I personally want to promote self expression and body confidence and tolerance of personal choices with my children. Not that my toddler would prob even notice it was a man dressed in feminine clothes. None of those kids seem phased or upset.

I don't personally enjoy drag shows but I don't see anything wrong with it either. I think there can be some misogyny with drag - eg taking the piss out of women. I would be wayyy more annoyed about that than a bare bum dancing. As long as it was clean.

Have you actually watched the videos in question?

You seem to be discussing 'drag'. There really isn't much about 'drag' in those videos. That a male has a pompadour like 'wig' and tiger pattern gloves doesn't symbolise 'drag' to me.

I am not talking about the person in blue with theatrical makeup. I am talking about the aerial acrobat in a BDSM harness and the person in a thong and the burlesque dancer. The links are all there at the start of the thread.

For all those saying it’s no different to a panto have you actually seen any videos of drag queen story times?

They aren’t just sitting down reading a book. They are gyrating all over the shop.
No child needs to see that.

If you think it’s the same as Christopher Biggins in a wig playing an ugly sister, then you are beyond help.

See, while I can see that some people can raise objections to aspects of pantomime dames, I'm not overly bothered by it. If the producers and/or actors of one of our local pantos, decided to do a funny story reading in panto dame costume, as a promotion for an upcoming pantomime, then that would be just fine. Wearing fancy dress of a character the opposite sex of your actual sex, isn't necessarily any sort of problem. If you are reading a funny but child friendly version of Cinderella from the point of view of the ugly sister, that you will be playing on stage in the coming weeks, then go for it.

If you are gyrating your thong exposed buttocks in front of children, while your front pouch flaps about. Then you should be on a register, regardless of whether or not you are dressed as an opposite sex character.

Does 'drag race' include stripping, twerking and sexualised nudity? Are there men in thongs gyrating in front of the children?

Because if so, it's not for kids.

Calm down. It's some people dancing in fancy dress. Everyone has an arse fgs. It's not much different to a panto.

I - like everyone else - do indeed have an arse. However, I don't saunter into Waitrose with it hanging out on display because that would be socially unacceptable.

In the same way, it is not acceptable for arses to be hanging out in front of small children, whether they are attached to someone who identifies as queer or not.

No pantomime dame has their arse out and the context is completely different. If you can't see that difference, maybe bother to read this entire thread.

ArabellaScott · 06/03/2023 11:19

Overheard in Waitrose:

'Cyril! Put your hairy arse away, please, we're only popping in for some pak choi and a bottle of bolly and you know what happened when you twerked in Lidl'

Murraydeservedit · 06/03/2023 11:25

I wouldn’t have a problem with that either.

My son was part of a local am dram group when he was young. He was in Christmas Pantomimes for years. There were of course pantomime dames.

Yes, some of the jokes sometimes contain mild sexual innuendos- but these generally go over most peoples heads if they are involved and and are pretty harmless.

The costumes I saw weren’t overtly sexualised. Just over exaggerated ball gowns. And there was no sexualised dancing or showing of flesh.

A man sitting dressed as an Ugly sister or the fairy god mother reading cinderella really wouldn’t have the same sexual connotations as a drag queen dancing in front of children.

Pantomime dames are not exclusively adult entertainment. They never have been, pantomime’s are historically for all ages. Drag shows have always been adult entertainment.

Anyone who is ok with their small kids watching RuPaul's drag race needs their head examined. It's utterly unsuitable for kids!!!

When was Christopher Biggins filmed upside down showing his arse to an audience of toddlers?

Never.

Have you actually been to a panto?

I agree.

Also, it’s broadcast AFTER the watershed, so the poster you are quoting is talking gubbins.

I've never seen Drag Race. Google seems to suggest it's 'rated 15'.

I've seen it (I really like drag, as it happens) and I'd say even 15 is pushing it. It should really be rated 18+.

MrsJamin · 06/03/2023 12:22

Every of the million episodes of Ru Paul's Drag seasons are rated 15. They are not for children FFS.

@winningeasy seriously you need your head read if you think people should be getting their bare behinds out around your child. I am shocked that you think this is ok - social workers would be concerned at this laissez faire attitude to parenting.

Definitely! Anyone showing this to kids needs mental help. It's extremely sexualised and inappropriate. All of it. It's definitely not just "fancy dress"!!!!!

In a properly functioning society social workers would be concerned, but not in this looking glass world that we are all now trapped in.

I was in a CP meeting a couple of weeks ago, and actually heard with my own ears a social worker utter the words, “We’ve recommended drugs rehab for Dad, but he doesn’t think it’s the right time.”

So, no. It’s not very likely that they would show the slightest concern.

I had a conversation about all this with someone yesterday. Someone who is waaaaay more open minded and cooler than me, the old bigot that I am.

I said that if my 8 year old dd was taken to a drag performance (spoiler - she wouldn’t be), I know she would actually be confused and probably quite frightened. She would on some level know it was sexual content beyond what she could comprehend. The confusion and fear would come because she wouldn’t be to understand those feelings. It’s not something I would ever consider putting her through. Putting her in that situation would be abuse in my eyes.

I was told that in that case, I’d raised her wrong and that I should look at my parenting.

Nah. I think I am doing just fine.

This genuinely made me laugh out loud. Fucking hell you're all mad.

Brokendaughter · 07/03/2023 05:36

If this is so okay, then where are the tv shows like it?

Where is the episode of Bing when Flop sits around with a pint in one hand as they all watch a group of adult men in fetish gear flap their bits about & call it dancing?

When did Paw Patrol put on thongs & swing from ribbons above babies heads?

Why didn't they ever have a Blue Peter episode with how to make your own fetish gear out of toilet rolls & a cut up washing up liquid bottle?

Even the BBC who happily employed Jimmy Saville drew the line before it got to this sort of blatant grooming.

nilsmousehammer · 07/03/2023 06:58

If safeguarding, basic common sense and boundaries are now 'mad', then sign me up. Call me absolutely fucking crazy. I'll gladly embrace being a total loon.

SpringIntoChaos · 07/03/2023 07:10

Grim 😳😨

And I dread to think where those coloured balls on the floor were popped out of 😵‍💫🤢 Looking at the shocked faces of the women...I'd guess from somewhere the sun doesn't shine 😲😮

For the love of God don't go giving them ideas.

Apparently these have been deep faked so they're not actually real.
