Are socks a rubbish present?

I love nice / new socks and so do my partner & kids!

I have bought my sons girlfriend earrings, a hair thing and some socks. Just thinking if others don’t share the love of socks this might be a dull present!

My 15yo puts socks on her Xmas lists. She likes ones like skull ones. I also got her ghost ones based on one of her favourite singers.

EffortlessDesmond · 03/03/2023 17:14

Socks are a great present, especially for men and people who have everything. BUT.... they must be nicer, and probably more expensive than you would buy for yourself. A pair of nice socks arrive every month, on subscription, as (part of) DH's Christmas present.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/03/2023 17:20

Yeah this is a loaded question… I’m a knitter so can appreciate the value of a pair of socks. But honestly I generally don’t gift them to people because, well, people are really weird about socks.

I have given handmade pedicure socks though and they went over well.

My funny sock story is a mixed work group were talking about knitting and gifts and whatnot someone suggested as a joke that I knit my coworker (whose wife was a knitter) a pair of socks. The instant visceral reaction from both of us shocked the suggestor until we explained that what he suggested was the knitting equivalent of suggesting we have sex.

You don’t knit socks for another’s knitters husband or accept them if you’re the husband. It’s just not done.

My suggestion @Starryskiesinthesky is to see where she falls on the socks as gifts spectrum

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/03/2023 17:21

Also… good choice on the Merino wool. Solid sock gift choice.

cassiatwenty · 03/03/2023 17:25

@OptimusPrime31 Where do you fall on socks as prezzies spectrum?

noodlesofoodles · 03/03/2023 17:28

I wish I got fancy socks as a present 😂 about once a year I treat myself to a beautiful pair of cashmere bed socks that cost £30 - DP accidentally threw my most recent pair in the wash with a dry cycle and felted them.. Safe to say he got sent a link to buy me a new pair!

I only wear diabetic socks and all my friends know this, so I do get annoyed with sock gifts unlesss they are the exact kind I buy.
In past times though I loved them.

I didn’t know I was supposed to be wearing special socks 🤔

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/03/2023 18:03

Lovely socks, I bloody love socks. Very few fit me as I have awful cankles and swollen feet due to heart and diabetes (and currently one foot is a normal size, normal ankle and the other is a giant meat-hoof... ) but I really appreciate a lovely pair of socks.

Give her the socks, if she doesn't like, well they're only part of the gift anyway!

I'll have them OP Grin

Me too🤝, there the kind I love with comfy Pj's around the house😍

TheChosenTwo · 03/03/2023 19:09

They look like the kind of cosy socks I would wear, I just wear dhs thick sports socks usually. Y I think you’ve chosen some really thoughtful presents and if I were opening them from my mil I would be touched. My Mil is so thoughtful too, always dropping in with something she thinks I would like, candles and cakes mainly, she knows I like consumable things 😂

Turtletotem · 03/03/2023 21:31

Don't ditch the socks they're great. I reckon she'll like them too.

Brefugee · 03/03/2023 21:46

we always have socks - Christmas and birthdays, and there is great disappointment if socks don't feature in the presents.
And this year when our adult DC brought their partner over for their first Christmas with us? Well they got socks too. And was bowled over by it.

Good socks are excellent things.

LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble · 03/03/2023 21:52

What is the present for op?

NeedToKnow101 · 03/03/2023 21:53

DS has always loved socks as a present, mainly happy socks from TK Maxx or slipper socks. I absolutely love my Norwegian socks which were a present.. 😍

My DP loves socks and has an embarrassingly large collection of novelty ones and is genuinely thrilled at the prospect of getting socks. He actually sends me sock gift lists in the run up to Christmas.

They are very Marmite though. I wouldn't get them if you're not sure.

What are diabetic socks??

Not tight on top to allow for circulation. Dad was t1 with heart issues and socks with rubber which were tight caused issues. Lots are also specially weaved to help circulation

Yes they are utterly crappy presents. I see them as basics so I don't think of them as gifts.

They are not basics if pair costs a tenner+ . That is not socks you just regularly buy yourself. Ours come from my native country and are top class. Lovely, warm, breathable, lasting.♥️

I love socks a gift

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 03/03/2023 22:10

If anyone doesn't want to go down sock route, wool leg warmers. I got them and oh my, my ankles are LOVING them

ThePoshUns · 03/03/2023 22:16

I love socks

thistimelastweek · 03/03/2023 22:20

My husband's dream would be to have new socks every day of the year.

He just loves new socks.

Choccyoclocky · 03/03/2023 22:24

I love getting socks. My friend got me dinosaur socks for my birthday and I love them.

I think the ones in your picture are too plain for a gift. If you're buying socks, novelty themed ones are good. I buy MIL dog themed socks.

OldTinHat · 03/03/2023 22:32

Socks are the best present!
