Are socks a rubbish present?

I love nice / new socks and so do my partner & kids!

I have bought my sons girlfriend earrings, a hair thing and some socks. Just thinking if others don’t share the love of socks this might be a dull present!

Are socks a rubbish present?

My relatives keep buying me expensive beautiful socks that claim to be for my shoe size but are tight on day 1 and shrink after the first (cold) wash.

I love good socks but I don’t know how to stop these beautiful but useless socks from arriving in my life.

MargaretThursday · 03/03/2023 08:41

Socks are fine but they have to be personal or a really nice type like bamboo that are a bit expensive to buy for yourself.

Anotheanon · 03/03/2023 08:53

Those are Celtic & Co so I very much doubt they are cheap socks.
My 18 year old absolutely loves getting socks.

VintageThoughts · 03/03/2023 08:53

Give her the socks!!

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 03/03/2023 08:57

I love new socks. I've bought the doughnut gift pack of oddsocks for my daughters birthday this month! (She will be 14 and will love them).

Mrsjayy · 03/03/2023 08:57

My Dds love socks as presents, I mean those are nice socks there hardly a pack of 3 .she will like them I'm.sure😀

Babdoc · 03/03/2023 08:58

DD’s fiancé actually requested socks for his stocking filler at Christmas. They do a lot of hillwalking/Munro bagging, and good hiking socks are vital. I would have regarded socks as unimaginative, but was happy to oblige!

Mrsjayy · 03/03/2023 09:03

My dd works shifts and sometimes outside I buy her expensive thermal socks for Christmas she loves them.

UWhatNow · 03/03/2023 09:03

Socks are ok as a ‘stocking filler’ but they have to be special or pretty. Eg. Expensive ski socks for someone going skiing or some nice cashmere etc. I personally wouldn’t balk at random grey striped socks but I wouldn’t consider it a particularly great present either.

Fluffygreenslippers · 03/03/2023 09:04

I love socks. Dh just surprised me with some baby yoda socks.

GoodChat · 03/03/2023 09:07

I love socks but they're a bit of a random choice as they're pretty boring.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/03/2023 09:09

It's a risk because unless they're the right thickness, they can make a big difference to how your shoes fit. So while they look like very nice socks (and she might think that if someone is spending £28 on her, she'd want more than a single pair of socks) she might not be able to wear them, because they look quite thick and make her shoes too tight.

Mincedpies · 03/03/2023 09:10

Socks are up there amongst the greatest gifts that can be given.

Admittedly I’m very old, but amongst my Christmas presents were three pairs of socks to be worn with wellies and they were hands down my favourite gift 😄

SunsetStrip · 03/03/2023 09:14

My dd's love socks, they're 24 and 17.

pointythings · 03/03/2023 09:39

It depends. I don't wear socks (tights in winter, bare legs in summer), but my DC all do and they love them. Especially ones in weird patterns. Christmas socks are now a tradition in our household.

TheDogthatDug · 03/03/2023 09:39

I love a good pair of socks as a gift. I got an uber expensive pair of alpaca wool socks for Christmas and were my favourite present.

AlannaOfTrebond · 03/03/2023 09:46

For those saying grey socks are boring, surely that depends on the recipients taste?
I've always preferred dark or muted colours and would have much preferred those socks to something brighter or with a "fun" design at any age.

MasterBeth · 03/03/2023 09:48

WeCome1 · 03/03/2023 08:05

It looks like they were £28. They’d be a bit wasted on her I think, depending on her age I doubt she’d appreciate them £28 worth.

What? Whaat? Whaaaat?

If I was a young woman, I can think of so many things I’d rather have for £28 than a pair of socks.

SallyWD · 03/03/2023 11:08

Socks are one of my favourite presents. They're always on my birthday list! I liked them when I was younger too.

Did you Google them to come to that price?

OP probably got them from TK Maxx Grin

familyissues12345 · 03/03/2023 11:15

I love gifts of socks - the softer the better. However I'm 40+

Teenage sons? Not so much..

Lemuriformes · 03/03/2023 11:19

I would love socks as a present - but as I have size 9 feet any normal socks are far too small. I have to wear mens' socks. So sadly any socks I get given get passed on to my mum.

KimberleyClark · 03/03/2023 11:20

Not for me. I love socks, the more brightly coloured the better.

pizzaHeart · 03/03/2023 11:25

Depends. These socks look fairly boring unless you know she will like them.
this^
nice and colourful cashmere socks - yes!
Fancy socks with the favourite character/ hobby related picture/ funny slogan- yes !
these ones - no

teen DD wouldn’t even put them on, she would be offended. Even I would be surprised a bit, unless they are cashmere or wool.
