People stare at me … why ?

I noticed in the past but more so recently… when I’m out and about I’ll catch men looking directly at me and then they look away when we make eye contact.

on the train/ walking to or from work/ in the office

does this happen to others? I feel so uncomfortable:(

Are you a messy eater?

<SNORT>

😂😂😂

WisherWood · 02/03/2023 09:27

Used to happen to me in my 20s. Combination of tits and legs.

I mean they were normal tits and legs. It's not that one was growing out of the other or anything like that.

It might seem anatomically improbable, but men's eyes are more closely linked to their balls than their brains.

Polly291869 · 02/03/2023 09:29

If it was because you were ugly, you'd know because someone would have told you by now - strangers on the street, regularly, from puberty on. I had an odd-shaped nose and people would yell across the road that I was the ugliest person they had ever seen. Once someone made me wind the car window down so they could tell me I was ugly.

Christ, some people really are beyond horrible.
I feel incensed on your behalf, @80s

AIBUNoNo · 02/03/2023 09:33

You are clearly drop dead gorgeous.

I understand.

Happens to me all the time 😂

Starlia · 02/03/2023 09:37

As a supermodel, I can relate.

GabriellaMontez · 02/03/2023 09:42

Have you got multiple face tattoos?

prettyraindrops · 02/03/2023 09:44

When I'm in my massive coat, no make up and 2 kids hanging on to me in aldi no one looks at me.
When I'm in a leather skirt in a bar I feel lots of eyes on me when I walk in.

I wonder why does anyone know?

Actually I lie. A guy once did approach me in Lidl and told me how he'd seen me around and how amazing I look and would love to take me out. It was very odd. Then he saw my engagement ring and said by that on your finger I guess someone has got there already. Freaked me out a bit!

IncompleteSenten · 02/03/2023 09:46

I'm sure you're not a hideous monster. People glance at each other all the time.
They're probably wondering why some random woman is looking at them.
Don't overthink it. Just go about your day.

spelunky · 02/03/2023 09:46

Might be that there is something striking about your appearance or the way you dress.

Or it might just be a normal level of people looking at one another and you are taking it quite personally for some reason. People do look at each other, it's normal. They will look away when you look because eye contact with a stranger is intense.

Do you also get approached/ do people flirt with you or comment etc?

Wishimaywishimight · 02/03/2023 09:53

Are you in your World Book Day costume?

MadSad · 02/03/2023 09:55

In my 20’s, all the time. Now in my late 30’s with a whinging kid hanging off my arm, not so much. And I’m really really ok with that. I did not enjoy the attention from pervy men in my youth at all.

Wishimaywishimight · 02/03/2023 09:56

Do they all position their bodies towards you too OP? If so, they're definitely attracted to you but won't approach as they know you are out of their league, they're afraid of the strength of their feelings etc. etc.

Shodan · 02/03/2023 09:58

If you're the woman who was standing at the top of the travelator in Mozzas the other day -I was staring because I was convinced you were my sister. I even did a little wave and smile and thought 'lol my own sister doesn't recognise me' when I got no response. Unsurprisingly, as it turned out, as it wasn't my sister 😳

Maybe everyone thinks you're their sister?

booboo82 · 02/03/2023 10:00

Do they really though ? Lol

Miabella89 · 02/03/2023 10:02

Many people just stare, that's normal. Or as written above, either you're too pretty or you're too ugly, but I'm sure the first is correct. But if I were you, I'd stare too.

ArabellaScott · 02/03/2023 10:03

Are you holding a sign that says 'Golf Sale'?

EyesForU · 02/03/2023 10:06

I've been young and attractive, young and unattractive, older and attractive, older and unattractive, had a temporary massive allergic reaction where I looked disfigured.
The only times people walked past me as if I was an invisible ghost was when they were indifferent about me because I blended in. When there is something attractive or shockingly unattractive to the point where strangers have commented and laughed at me, that's when people looked: either something really good or really bad. They held the gaze and repeatedly made eye contact when they were sexually interested or thought I was attractive. When I looked bad, I had a one off glance that looked horrified, wide eyed and then they would avoid me, give me their back or move away and seem flustered.
People who think the op is full of herself or made this up probably blend in with the crowds which is a very relaxing and good thing actually. Getting stared at a lot does happen absolutely. You don't need to be a supermodel either, men can and do find a wide type of looks attractive.

LilylilyDaisy · 02/03/2023 10:08

I had a day last week where I was in the supermarket and quite a few people were looking at me as I went around, more so than usual, to the extent that I worried I had something odd going on, like a rogue loop of hair sticking up, or a black streak of mascara across my nose or something.

Checking in the mirror at home, there was nothing amiss but I did have coral lipstick on that day (not overly bright, just coral toned) so perhaps that caught people's eye.

Sometimes there might be a detail that just catches most peoples' eye, doesn't mean there's anything wrong. I don't stare but my eye does occasionally notice something about someone, could be a scarf or an earring or whatever, and if I notice it, chances are other people will notice it too.

Cats246 · 02/03/2023 10:08
  • You live in an area where EVERY man has autism and is incapable of eye contact.
  • You have something tattooed across your face they're trying to read.
-You were cursed and are now visible only to men, not women.
PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/03/2023 10:09

@Underminer love a bit of Micky

Climbles · 02/03/2023 10:13

This happened to me on holiday recently. I’m a very average middle aged (invisible) women but both men and women in this country seemed to stare at me. I went through a few theories, non of which seemed to explain it. DH didn’t get stared at all. I never got to the bottom of it.

NastyNiff · 02/03/2023 10:14

When I've slept well (very rare) this happens to me too. I look better those days.

Wishimaywishimight · 02/03/2023 10:16

NellietheElephantpackedhertrunks · 02/03/2023 06:31

I’m stunning beautiful and get this a lot too. But I just turn my red, veiny eyes away from them, smooth down my beard and waddle away as quickly as I can.

This made me laugh properly! Love the username too - I'm singing the song now 😀

GloomyDarkness · 02/03/2023 10:31

I doubt anyone can tell you especially if it's suddenly worse.

Since around 11 I've found similar unwanted staring due to the gravitational pull of large breasts.

I've had other women insist I'm imagining - but then blame you if they do notice their man doing it. I've even had pitying comment on here about it being "sad" I don't have the confidence to dress without considering this - I can and sometime did wear what I wanted when young but it does come with downside of unwanted attention which often I felt was so unpleasant it wasn't worth it IMO.

Anyway I seem to last decade to have mumsified myself to such an extent to counter the gradational forces but it has made me hugely approachable and somehow random people's substitute mum.

ALittleBitAhAh · 02/03/2023 10:38

I felt like people were looking at me when I went shopping one day. It was summer and I was wearing a dress which I wouldn't normally feel confident to do. Thought maybe I must look quite nice. Got home and realised I had a bit of magnum ice cream chocolate smeared on my nose 🤣
