Roundabout with diagram , was I wrong?

Ridelikethewindypops · 28/02/2023 19:20

I'm the red line, white van is blue line, he was behind me in my blind spot, yellow x is where I indicated to leave the roundabout. He blew me out of it.
This is the town I live in ( hopefully unrecognisable from the air 😀) But if I was wrong ( and I'm prepared to admit it if voting is unanimous ) Then I have been going around this roundabout incorrectly my whole adult life!

What does 'he blew me out of it' mean, OP?

daffodilday · 28/02/2023 20:40

If there are 2 lanes in the road you’re driving onto , from the Roundabout, then you’re not in the wrong .

Leftbutcameback · 28/02/2023 20:42

Worth noting that if there’s no right exit, and straight ahead is the final exit, you should be in the right lane for that exit. Appreciate this is unusual but it catches a lot of people out at one I use most days.

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 20:43

@BabyPapa as a driving instructor do you teach techniques or rules?

As in, you teach them the best way but it's not the law or Highway Code but just good practice?

Every generation is taught differently, from stopping at give ways to driving through them and merging. (Which gives me the heebie jeebies!).

BabyPapa · 28/02/2023 20:43

On reflection you could have been in the correct lane IF there are two lanes on entry and exit. usually a sign near the entry to the roundabout will let you know. If you post a pin on google maps we can have a real indepth dig .... if you care than much.

YouOKHun · 28/02/2023 20:43

My DS recently failed his driving test metres from the test centre at the end of what had been a perfect test for exactly what you did there @Ridelikethewindypops which was a major fault and failed him instantly. His examiner called it “flatlining a roundabout”.

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 20:46

Salutary lesson to everyone here would be that everyone thinks they are right, and indeed may well be driving as they were taught to drive.

Don't assume you know what the other driver is doing.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 28/02/2023 20:46

The first roundabout I think you were fine. It's two lanes onto the roundabout and two lanes to exit.

That reminds me of my late father saying to me when I was learning to drive, “Always drive assuming everyone else is a homicidal maniac and you should be OK”!

You can see two lanes on the photo she posted.

Honestly, the amount of people falsely claiming she was wrong on this this worrying.

daffodilday · 28/02/2023 20:51

What was the van driver even annoyed about ? You being in that lane did not affect him unless he was driving badly and trying to go right while being in the left lane.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 28/02/2023 20:52

I suggest anyone who thinks the OP is wrong on the first roundabout to have a think about what that second lane is for coming off the roundabout and who would use it. Because by your logic there would never be a need for it.

🤦

Mine used to say something very similar and it really has helped me!

This . Who is that second lane for , if not for cars in the lane OP was in ? The Highway Code does not account for all Roundabouts. Drivers also have to apply common sense .

I wasn't. Definitely left lane for left and straight on. Right lane for anything past that.

I learnt about 18 years ago.

I passed years ago and was taught left lane for left and straight over always. Going in the right hand lane would count as a major fault.

If there are arrows indicating that the right lane can go straight over you should obviously still be hyper aware of anyone to the left of you.

My youngest has just passed her test recently and she says it’s the same now. Sorry OP 😬

Inastatus · 28/02/2023 20:55

@Ridelikethewindypops - this roundabout has exactly the same layout as the one in my town and if you were in my town you would 100% be in the right lane. Although there are usual rules of the road, many places have exceptions which should be clearly marked if that is the case. My DH is a driving instructor and backs me up on this.

I don't know why you're sorry. The op was correct

whynotwhatknot · 28/02/2023 20:56

was there a secind lane the exit youre going to

This.

I was taught you could use either lane, but I learned 35 years ago so maybe things have changed. I’m was really surprised that so many posters think OP was wrong.

If there are two lanes coming off then the lines are too faded to be seen clearly, certainly from the satellite photo.

The op's red line goes over what might be the centre line. Reminds me of the thread the other day where the op deliberately drew her coloured lines over the lines on the road to mislead. Makes you wonder.

Op, we're they two lanes coming off or not? After all you drove that route, not us.

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 20:59

The red line also goes to the middle of the exit road, not into the right lane exit.

allthegearandnoideaatall · 28/02/2023 20:59

Fantastic diagram. Top notch.
Awful driving though….

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 21:00

Those saying OP is wrong- the Highway Code doesn't agree. It doesn't specify which lane for straight on.

FurAndFeathers · 28/02/2023 21:01

WetBandits · 28/02/2023 19:22

Why were you going straight over in the inside lane? That lane is for people turning right Confused

No it isn’t. The road OP enters and exits the roundabout on has two lanes. She stays in her lane the whole time. She’s perfectly correct
