Roundabout with diagram , was I wrong?

I'm the red line, white van is blue line, he was behind me in my blind spot, yellow x is where I indicated to leave the roundabout. He blew me out of it.
This is the town I live in ( hopefully unrecognisable from the air 😀) But if I was wrong ( and I'm prepared to admit it if voting is unanimous ) Then I have been going around this roundabout incorrectly my whole adult life!

Jesus.

Both pictures you should take the left lane. As you're leaving at the second exit. Unless its two lanes on the exit, and/or the left lane is FIRST exit only.

I'm the sort of person who would deliberately let you drive into me and take all your insurance money so this kind of dumb question annoys me. But I guess at least you asked, and hopefully now you know.

Second picture shes taking the 3rd exit...

Also generally roundabout crashes go down as 50/50

It's the third exit on the second picture. Don't confuse things!

Yes ... this ....

Defensive driving at roundabouts is usually best policy - especially mini roundabouts - those are pretty much always put down as 50:50 even though some idiots drive straight at them

Should probably put my glasses on. Thanks 👏

First one though. Deffo left.

Shefliesonherownwings · 28/02/2023 20:20

Probably want to avoid Hemel Hempstead too OP. I’m in agreement with the consensus, wrong lane in the first picture but right hand land is correct for second picture.

GoodChat · 28/02/2023 20:21

I hope you wear them when driving @Blablablanamechangagain Wink

Either lane is fine but unconfident drivers pick the left hand lane for straight on. It's not in the HC that you have to do that. It's just that you can end up cutting people up/getting in the way if you aren't any good at crossing lanes. Takes more balls to use the right hand lane. Some people use the left hand lane to go all the way round so they never have to cross a lane.

(obviously also depends on road markings)

It has nothing to do with lack of confidence. It's about safety and defensive driving.

I'm worried about the handful of people of here taking about aggression and equating taking the more problematic/wrong lane with confidence.

Those people who were taught to use both lanes to go straight on at roundabouts as standard, when did you learn?

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 28/02/2023 20:24

So you were third exit?
2nd picture you were right.
anything past 12 is right Lane.
unless sign posted to the contrary, left Lane for 1 or 2. Right Lane for 2 +

Left hand lane to go right on a round about are wombling liabilities.

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 20:27

@knittingaddict I learned 35 years ago. The thing is, the road is full of people who have been taught- and believe categorically- different things.

The only real surety is to be aware of other vehicles, allow for other people to make mistakes, and ease/negotiate/merge your way through.

Set rules just don't work if they change over time.

It also seems to depend where you live. In my area, most of the roundabouts have lane control and spiral you into position. DSis came up here and thought she could use her local roundabout technique, which is to actively change lane as you see fit.

Same with using both lanes on the roundabout. People on here seem to think no one should get on the roundabout if someone is to the right, in case they want to get off. Well we'd be in permanent gridlock if you waited around up here.

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 20:31

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 28/02/2023 20:25

Thank you. As I thought. So not right lane for straight on.

Ridelikethewindypops · 28/02/2023 20:31

My mum definitely did this. Butshe hot her licence in a time before there was a test. Also possibly before any roundabouts or motorways near us

Maybe best I use the train from now on.

Beetlewings · 28/02/2023 20:35

I failed my test first time for doing that. Inner lane is for turning right

TeenLifeMum · 28/02/2023 20:35

My town has signs to tell you which lane to use but differs from Highway Code because locals clearly can’t follow standard rules. Utterly bonkers.

Logicoutofthewindow · 28/02/2023 20:37

You're wrong unless you were intending to turn right.

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 20:37

This clearly says
Left for left
Right for right
And whatever seems appropriate/best for any intermediate exit

So either lane. And you mirror signal manoeuvre and negotiate your way off.

Roundabouts can be very challenging. The Beckton roundabout that branches off to the A13 and A406 is a prime example of confusion. There’s 4 lanes and 4 exits. You think you’ve chose the correct lane for your exit but as with most roundabouts, you have to merge and so feel as though you are in the wrong lane. Now Charlie Browns roundabout (Woodford Green) on the other hand has the lanes marked out for each exit (of which there are 3). So you are in the correct lane from entering to exiting, never having to merge. I think all boroughs should adopt this concept.

BabyPapa · 28/02/2023 20:38

As a Driving instructor I can confirm you look to be in the wrong lane... unless local rules dictate otherwise further up the road.

JudgeJ · 28/02/2023 20:39

Lardolader · 28/02/2023 19:22

Oh... Sorry I think you're wrong! If I'm going straight over a roundabout usually be in the left lane? Right lane is for turning right... Altho totally depends on road markings of course

The right lane isn't necessarily for turning right, if I'm going straight on and use the right lane, depending on the road markings.
