Roundabout with diagram , was I wrong?

I'm the red line, white van is blue line, he was behind me in my blind spot, yellow x is where I indicated to leave the roundabout. He blew me out of it.
This is the town I live in ( hopefully unrecognisable from the air 😀) But if I was wrong ( and I'm prepared to admit it if voting is unanimous ) Then I have been going around this roundabout incorrectly my whole adult life!

You were in the wrong lane

The big roundabouts like me allow for you to go straight over in the right hand lane. However, I make sure I'm right over the roundabout before signaling to move over to the left hand lane if that makes sense?

Yes. In practice if there are two exit lanes then you can obviously do this.

Swannning · 28/02/2023 19:52

What do the road signs say?

I'm old so was always taught left lane to go left, right hand lane to any exit past 12 o'clock, straight on in either lane unless road markings say otherwise.

@iloveyankeecandle can you confirm you are speaking on behalf of all big roundabouts? 😀
When in doubt, ask the roundabout.
WHICH LANE SHOULD I BE IN??

You can go straight over a roundabout from the right lane. I was taught this too. I do it when I'm feeling aggressive. But, to go directly from the right lane to the exit you would have to drive into the right lane of the exit, not cut into the left lane.

Usually a larger rbout exit has 2 lanes for a short distance to allow merging.

But ... this looks like a single lane exit, therefore you would have to move over into the left lane to exit, while giving way to whatever was in the left lane.

Fansandblankets · 28/02/2023 19:54

NevieSticks · 28/02/2023 19:48

For the second one you use the right hand lane and after you have passed the last exit before yours you indicate left and start to move over according to the HC.

This!

Whyisitsososohard · 28/02/2023 19:55

I think you were in the wrong lane. But some roundabouts do have signage to indicate the left lane is for left only. But if no sings or road markinga left lane if for left and straight on.

However there's a roundabout near where I used to live that has 5 exits. The same issue you seem to have encountered happens. With people using the right lane for straight on. I think this is wrong!

notthisagainforest · 28/02/2023 19:56

I think either lane is ok. We have one just like this and people use both lanes for straight over them merge into one I always go left lane though

EgyptianCat · 28/02/2023 19:56

On the second roundabout you should enter in the right lane; once you’ve passed the exit before the one you want to leave at, indicate and move to the left lane (yellow x) and exit the roundabout from there.

Merlott · 28/02/2023 19:57

OP to answer your question:

Get in the right lane

Do not indicate

Just after the exit before the one you want to take, indicate left, move left, exit the rbout.

All while remembering the order to act is MSM. Mirror, signal, maneuver!

EgyptianCat · 28/02/2023 19:58

If you were to stay in the right lane the whole way round, someone could think you were going on round and come into the left lane from the previous exit and then try to leave at the same exit as you. You should always be in the left lane just before you exit a roundabout, unless it is a two lane exit.

ArcticSkewer · 28/02/2023 20:00

Either lane is fine but unconfident drivers pick the left hand lane for straight on. It's not in the HC that you have to do that. It's just that you can end up cutting people up/getting in the way if you aren't any good at crossing lanes. Takes more balls to use the right hand lane. Some people use the left hand lane to go all the way round so they never have to cross a lane.

(obviously also depends on road markings)

Survey99 · 28/02/2023 20:01

Its a "van". Big vehicle. So even if he was in your blind spot you would have seen him when you glanced over your left shoulder to check your blind spot before changing lanes on the roundabout wouldn't you?...........

You do check your blind spot...? 🙈

Ridelikethewindypops · 28/02/2023 20:04

Re second diagram, I have been using the right lane. So not a complete liability on the road which is reassuring.

I wonder should you ( we all ) have to retake the test when renewing licences. Or maybe just me...

Catinabeanbag · 28/02/2023 20:04

Highway Code says this:
‘When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
you should not normally need to signal on approach
stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want’

so it could go either way really. When they say ‘intermediate’ they mean not right (or all the way round) or left, for which there are other instructions.

No, not true. You should always use the inside lane whenever you're on a roundabout unless your exit is past 12 o clock.

highfidelity · 28/02/2023 20:05

First roundabout picture - You were in the wrong - you should have moved into the outside lane as you passed the first exit.

Second roundabout picture - Inside lane until you pass the second exit then you move into the outside lane to take the third exit.

Roundabouts aren't difficult 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, are you my sister?! 😂

Unsure but I've of the conditions of your license is an obligation to stay up to date with changes to the highway code, and driving threads often show that many people don't do this

OneTC · 28/02/2023 20:06

*one of the conditions

I wouldn't worry, everyone is following different 'in their head' rules at the best of times and the best approach is to check that blind spot!!

I did check, I genuinely just didn't see him. He was quite a bit behind me, not sort of alongside me iykwim. I only became aware of him when he blew the horn and I craned my neck and saw him enter the lane behind me.

I'm just teasing really ...well about the taking more balls bit .... Almost everyone sticks to the left hand lane for everything where I am, I've noticed, even U turns!

I was taught, a long time ago, straight on could be either lane but as it's a nightmare to signal in time to move across, it's hardly worth the stress anyway.

ChrisPPancake · 28/02/2023 20:11

You were in the wrong lane in the first one.
With roundabout 2, I'd enter using the right lane, stay nearest the roundabout past exit one, then just after exit 2 indicate/begin moving left to leave at exit 3 (your B).

The people of Swindon can rest easy, I will never ever ( ever) attempt that roundabout 😱

Jesus.

Both pictures you should take the left lane. As you're leaving at the second exit. Unless its two lanes on the exit, and/or the left lane is FIRST exit only.

I'm the sort of person who would deliberately let you drive into me and take all your insurance money so this kind of dumb question annoys me. But I guess at least you asked, and hopefully now you know.
