Quran School Incident

The reaction to this non-incident is shameful. We're effectively charging this poor autistic boy with blasphemy and his mother is begging for his life.

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 28/02/2023 14:35

The head teacher is quoted as saying “no malicious intent” and the mother of the boy speaking with the Islamic community leaders says her child is autistic. It does not seem like an act of religious hate, just kids being kids. But as predicted, mumsnet is up for special punishments for those who offend religious minorities. Can’t imagine anyone getting upset about a bible being smudged with no malicious intent.

Mynewname2023 · 28/02/2023 14:36

Chickenly · 28/02/2023 14:35

That's not true. Someone on this exact thread has already said their DD was disciplined for binning a Bible at school.

Yeah disciplined at school! They didn’t involve police and local churches, it’s bloody barmy 😂

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 28/02/2023 14:38

@Chickenly we’re the police called? Did her mum have to apologise to a council of Christian community leaders to de-escalate the situation? Hardly comparable.

Sqqueeeeeeee · 28/02/2023 14:41

I don't buy the faux-ignorance of people on these threads. Everyone with a brain cell knows why it's unacceptable.

  • I have no interest in art. If I damaged a Picasso painting on purpose then people would be offended and, despite no interest in art, I understand why.
  • I have no interest in the Beatles. If someone damaged a Beatles master record on purpose then people would be offended and, despite no interest in the Beatles, I would understand why.
  • I have no interest in football. If someone damaged the 1966 World Cup Final ball on purpose, people would be offended and, despite no interest in football, I would understand why.
  • I have no interest in Jane Austen. If someone damaged a Jane Austen manuscript on purpose then people would be offended and, despite no interest in Jane Austen, I would understand why.
It's not difficult to understand that sometimes things matter to other people even if they don't matter to you. Five year olds understand that concept. It's unacceptable to damage things that are significant to other people just because you don't care about them and, frankly, more often because they matter to other people but not to you. I don't believe anyone here genuinely doesn't understand that concept - you're not fooling anyone.

The only time I ever hear of anger over anything religious is always the same religion.

Don’t see Buddhists or Sikhs or Christians tending to be up in arms about most things.

I'm part-Jewish. You need to pay more attention to the news.

Exactly. We all know it’s the same religion again and again. But nobody really wants to acknowledge it.

You don't see many deliberately trying to offend the others either

I am not questioning whether it could potentially offend or why it was offensive. I am well aware of muslim teachings in this regards and it is not a behaviour I would take part in.

My issue is the overreaction to stupid school child stuff, and how that overreaction is not based on sensitivity, but fear.

Yeah, because the mother doesn't want to press charges.

Appearing to apologise isn't "begging for her son's life".

It would be difficult, seeing as you don't 'press charges' in the UK.

Zippidydoda · 28/02/2023 14:49

I don’t understand why this is national news. Of course they shouldn’t treat a holy book from any religion with a lack of
respect but the school could have dealt with this without outside (media /community groups) involvement.

If there was no malicious intent then surely it’s a case of education and working with the children to ensure it doesn’t happen again (whatever even happened as it’s not that clear- but certainly nothing that sounds significant).

Fifi0102 · 28/02/2023 14:51

Oh for god's sake we don't have blasphemy laws in the UK. Anyone sending death threats to a child over a book needs to be thrown in jail. The Qur'an pictured is in English not Arabic.

UdoU · 28/02/2023 14:51

Even if you exclude the fact they were behaving like little shits (no one dares someone else to bring in a Qaran unless they're being a little shit) and ignore any religious factor, the punishment isn't unreasonable. No child innocently dares someone else to bring a religious text into school. When I was in Y9, a guy in Y11 brought in a bible and made a video of him eating it.

I agree with this. Death threats are deplorable, but I can see why you would bring in the police to talk to the little shits.

My husband was a Pakistani kid in a West Yorkshire school. He was so inured to being called a 'P*' that he even hung out with the white kids who called him this.

potniatheron · 28/02/2023 14:52

Islamophobia is a huge problem in this country and this kind of hysterical reporting just fans the flames. The media has been in faux outrage about it for a few days. If everyone involved had responded like adults and the media had not incited outrage, we would probably not be at the point of death threats.

FlumpyLump · 28/02/2023 14:52

Way back in 2002 when I was 16 and at college, another young girl had her crucifix ripped from her neck and thrown on the floor where it was then spat on by a boy of another religion and she was called “Christian scum”.
Do you know what was done?
Absolutely nothing.
No investigations, no suspensions, no uproar.

I know this was over 20 years ago, but I can’t see the outcome being any different today.

UdoU · 28/02/2023 14:54

Mynewname2023 · 28/02/2023 14:44

So 4 white kids kick around the Quran to upset Muslim boys and the fault lies with. Muslims. Can you say gaslighting?

In all of those examples the person is damaging something that does not belong to them.

If I owned a rare Beatles Master record and damaged it on purpose then it would be no-one else's business.

The book belonged to the boy. He was free to do to it as he wished.

I see the point you're trying to make, however, all colours can be Muslim.

No I think some of the Islamic community need to look at themselves. They live in a secular country we have all religions living here yet the only ones sending death threats and trying to impose blasphemy laws are from this religion. Why are other religions fine ? Why are some Muslims so insecure about their religion they feel the need to send death threats etc?

Islamophobia is also racism.

OhmygodDont · 28/02/2023 15:01

So deaths threats are ok to a child? Because they caused some damage to a religious book…

QuitsAmidCrisis · 28/02/2023 15:02

Only the boys really know what the intent was. Kicking any book around makes me uncomfortable for some reason. It feels disrespectful. I can’t see an innocent reason for this act.

However, a talking-to and detention would have sufficed. No need for police, threats or news coverage. Nobody wins here.
