Tonight we had Carbonara from Gousto and they send ingredients for a side salad. Who the fuck has salad with carbonara? My DH wasn't as outraged as I am 😂

YABU - salad with Carbonara is normal
YANBU - it's weird!!

Mil serves salad with her roast dinners. Now that’s weird.

I've had a vinegar salad with a full roast in Yorkshire, it was delish .

Hotpotter · 28/02/2023 06:58

If you used the crème fraiche then you didn’t have carbonara

follyfoot37 · 28/02/2023 06:58

But was it proper carbonara rather than what the brits/americans think it is (bacon and cream etc)

DelphiniumBlue · 28/02/2023 07:01

I think a slightly sharp sort of side salad, like tomato and onion, or rocket, works quite well with carbonara. But definitely not on the same plate.

mondaytosunday · 28/02/2023 07:04

We always have salad with any kind of pasta! Cuts through the clagginess, so eaten at the same time. And as I don't like washing up, often on the same wide bowl.

Allthelego · 28/02/2023 07:21

If the pasta dish is cooked in the oven, like tuna pasta bake or lasagna, then a salad goes with it. If it’s cooked onthe hob then no salad. Don’t know why, that’s just the way it should be.

Girasoli · 28/02/2023 07:32

Everytime someone eats salad with carbonara a real Italian person dies.

I'm a real Italian person and I quite like a lemony salad with a creamy pasta dish, it's a nice contrast. I also don't mind pineapple on pizza.

I draw the line at chicken in pasta though, that's just wrong.

FangsForTheMemory · 28/02/2023 07:35

In Italy you don’t have side dishes with pasta. I’d eat it as a starter though.

NashvilleQueen · 28/02/2023 07:39

Hot veg needed. Tenderstem broccoli, spinach, kale, samphire etc. Not cold salad on the same plate.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 28/02/2023 07:41

Never had salad with pasta, the thought has never even crossed my mind. Never been given salad with pasta in a restaurant either

This is the way.

The real question is, did the carbonara have cream in it? If so, it wasn't carbonara.

AmandaClare · 28/02/2023 07:44

My Italian friends always have salad after pasta- as a different course rather than a side dish. Totally normal.

MegaManic · 28/02/2023 07:45

I love salad with carbonara - a nice rocket and tomato salad with balsamic vinegar.

That rather depends on which of the origin stories you believe.

Even if the original dish was a centuries old one I'm sure the Americans in Rome version has some truth.

My grandfather was in Italy in WWII, everything was in short supply so making a pasta dish with bacon, eggs and milk brought by the Americans is very likely to have happened.

massistar · 28/02/2023 07:52

I have been married to an Italian for 20 years and I can confirm that salad with carbonara (and every other pasta dish) is a thing. But it's eaten before the pasta, which is generally a smaller portion than Brits serve, not on the same plate.

BarrelOfOtters · 28/02/2023 07:54

Using pizza to scoop up coleslaw is my on my own eating treat. Pizza Hut used to a half pizza, jacket coleslaw option, I loved that and thought it was height of sophistication at 16.

salad with hob baked pasta is just my way of trying to balance out the fuckton of Parmesan….

chicken in pasta is Wrong.

ifonly4 · 28/02/2023 07:58

I made a creamy tomato pasta last night, and we had a side salad but in a separate bowl. DH didn't dare complain, as I managed to get peppers, cucumber and tomato on the one day Tescos have had a delivery in the last week.

CountZacular · 28/02/2023 08:14

Yes to salad if it’s just made properly with eggs and cheese. No to salad if it’s made with cream or milk.

I don’t know why, but any creamy sauce needs I would only eat with side veggies instead. I would eat pesto pasta or tomato based pasta dishes with salad though.

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 08:32

Normal.

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 08:35

I don't like chicken in pasta either.

We're people really eating carbonara in the 70s? I thk we were still on spag bol when we went to an Italian restaurant.

My husband cooked a student version of carbonate in the early 80's and it had definitely been around before that.

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 08:43

Carbonara, obviously.

Catspyjamas17 · 28/02/2023 08:47

I love pasta with a side salad, why not? I love the contrast of hot and cold. I actually love hot pasta on top of a salad personally though I would serve them separately.

endlesscraziness · 28/02/2023 08:48

I dislike salad with pasta. I prefer to Chuck extra veg in the pasta

Inastatus · 28/02/2023 08:53

Yes to salad with pasta
No to chicken in pasta
