Salad with Carbonara

Tonight we had Carbonara from Gousto and they send ingredients for a side salad. Who the fuck has salad with carbonara? My DH wasn't as outraged as I am 😂

YABU - salad with Carbonara is normal
YANBU - it's weird!!

Eat leaves with every meal.

It's the law.

Cheguevarahamster · 27/02/2023 22:11

I had this tonight. It was lovely.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 27/02/2023 22:12

I wouldn't put it on the plate with the pasta but I can see how a fairly sharp tasting salad (e.g. with balsamic dressing) would work before or after as a bit of a palate cleanser.

gogohmm · 27/02/2023 22:13

I toss rocket through mine, controversial I know! Adds significant health value

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 27/02/2023 22:13

Yab odd. It's pasta why would having a salad with it be a bad thing? We always have salad with pasta.

EnglishMuffins · 27/02/2023 22:13

I’m with you OP. Salad has no place on a plate of hot creamy pasta. I wouldn’t care to eat it beforehand either 😂

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 27/02/2023 22:15

PS. Not on the same plate. Didn't read full thread. Dh trained that out of me ha hal

Fairislefandango · 27/02/2023 22:16

Yep with salad. Preferably but not necessarily on a side plate. If you want to just binge on carbs, fill your boots, but don't pretend it's weird to eat a side salad with pasta!

jannier · 27/02/2023 22:16

Always have a salad love it. How else do you get a balanced meal?

Sanch1 · 27/02/2023 22:17

We had that too. YABU, you can just leave it if it offends you!

Iwantmyoldnameback · 27/02/2023 22:17

We're people really eating carbonara in the 70s? I thk we were still on spag bol when we went to an Italian restaurant.

GrumpyPanda · 27/02/2023 22:17

dudsville · 27/02/2023 22:07

Whilst i do like salads with pasta dishes, i also thinks it's a very dated 70s British way of eating. What salad ingredients did gousto provide?

Well Swedes have something called a pizza salad so...

Not sure I'd personally eat a salad with carbonara, but I imagine they'd need to add something to make it a full meal box. Don't they make the most sense when it's a bunch of ingredients you'd have to buy separately and wouldn't necessarily have in your pantry? With pasta, bacon, egg, pecorino and black pepper that's a lot of very basic/pantry staples level stuff there. Unless of course they're actually providing proper guanciale.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 27/02/2023 22:17

*were not we're

TeddyTrucks · 27/02/2023 22:20

Hot food next to cold food is just wrong to me. If on separate plates then maybe, but even then I could only imagine eating them one at a time. I'd never put hot food and cold food in my mouth at the same time.

MikeLitoriss · 27/02/2023 22:21

I really dont know why it makes me feel so outraged, I love having a salad with lasagne or macaroni cheese so not sure why my gut reaction says it's so wrong with carbonara (and also spag bol, tuna pasta bake etc)

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 27/02/2023 22:21

I wouldn't have salad with carbonara. I would with lasagne.

But pasta is for triple carbing, chips and garlic bread please.

Beckywiththefrizzyhair · 27/02/2023 22:21

We have peas otherwise it's dinner with zero veg. And garlic bread. Savages.

AdoraBell · 27/02/2023 22:23

Salad on a separate plate. Same with lots of pasta dishes.

Utterlyexhausted · 27/02/2023 22:24

YABU
Side salad is perfect with pasta, what's the problem?

RampantIvy · 27/02/2023 22:25

I love the contrast of a crisp fresh salad against a warm, soft pasta dish. On separate plates of course.

Tinypetunia · 27/02/2023 22:25

The only thing with carbonara is garlic bread. Anything else is an insult to taste buds

HeddaGarbled · 27/02/2023 22:26

I always have salad with a pasta meal.

Redlorry1234 · 27/02/2023 22:27

I fry a load of spinach in the oil/garlic left over from making the carbonara and have it on the side!

WoolyMammoth55 · 27/02/2023 22:31

Decades ago on a school exchange I was staying with a french family who gave me carbonara for dinner (which I think was the first time I'd eaten it).

The salad was big and green and dressed in vinagrette and was served as a separate starter.

Then carbonara after that had been removed! Tres exotique, non?

I don't like salad on the side but I do like it as a starter, with a really nice freshly mixed vinagrette.

Justanotherlurker · 27/02/2023 22:34

Salad with Carbonara is a load of Garlic bread (it has green flecks) or a starter of fresh bread with aioli farlic essentially a veg.

Gousto are just making sure they 'deliver' x amount of your 5 a day, whilst even the lazy Italians in the UK who would order wouldn't touch the salad.

I was in Brescia last summer and alcohol had taken affect so we went on Uber looking for food, we laughed at all the Pizzas with fries on top as being purely a tourist attraction, it really isn't, it is quite popular trend that will make a lot of the double carb crowd on here into a tail spin!
