Does anyone remember coloured toilet paper? Any other random disappearances?

Just this really.

I have recollections of toilet paper being available in lilac, mint, peach, baby blue. My husband thinks in lying.

its now white. I’m not sure when the colours disappeared.

I'd love some lilac loo roll to brighten up the day. I realise that this is a non-problem but I’m bored and have had a glass of wine (or two).

Has anyone got any other random disappearances that cannot be explained?

Old spice
Soap on a rope
Eau de Carbolique
Oil of Ulay
Mint coloured toilet paper
Tooth powder instead of tooth paste

All of these in my grandparent’s bathrooms

Meanwhile I craved soaps moulded in the shape of fruits, shells, animals… bath oil pearls, oval or heart shaped soaps with the muppets, or Holly Hobby sticker stuck on them… muppet shaped soaps! Oh the 80’s😀

Yes I remember coloured toilet paper well. We'd buy the colour that matched our bathroom, pink if I recall. However I eventually read that using coloured paper was bad as the dye could be harmful. After that we only bought white.

OldFan · 26/02/2023 02:11

VO5 hot oil. They were little tubes you’d put in warm water to heat them up and then squeeze them on your hair. I wanted them so bad as a kid because the adverts made them seem so glam.

@lapasion Apparently they rereleased it, but it has different oils like coconut in now. And you don't have to warm it up like you used to. I didn't feel the need to try it.

For those who mentioned Lightbuoy soap- it was before my time, but I get 'Redbuoy' which is a knock off of it, from Amazon.

Tooth powder instead of tooth paste

@user1496262496 I got some at one point last year. But it doesn't have fluoride in it so I wouldn't use it instead of toothpaste. It is fun to use though.

sashh · 26/02/2023 02:15

People used to buy it to match their bathroom. You used to get multi coloured tissues too.

I think

a) coloured bathrooms went out of fashion and b) do you really want the enviromental impact of colouring paper you are wiping your bum on?

ThinWomansBrain · 26/02/2023 02:16

something I miss is singly wrapped sachets with handwipes

user1496262496 · 26/02/2023 02:16

I think tooth powder was probably made by the same people who made Vim (where did that go?). I accidentally inhaled some tooth powder as a small child. Vile stuff

Bring back Body Shop strawberry and sea salt body wash. I adored it and used to buy it in huge bottles.

I remember peach, pink and light green. Not lilac though.

They used to sell lilac in Wilko ( was wilkinson's back then) I only remember because my sister caused an argument (her) bathroom.

Scented bath cubes, I remember them in the 80s, often in Christmas gift sets. They were in silver backed paper with a paper strip label around, then you'd crumble them under the running bath water, always left hard bits in the bottom of the bath that hurt to sit on

Wavescrashingonthebeach

cross posted - great minds think alike!

I also remember a funky body butter type cream too, it looked like whipped cream with a red gel (that looked like jam) running through it

The body cream was from Boots. I can’t remember what the range was called but it had a mint choc chip body scrub too.

Backtorealitynow · 26/02/2023 03:25

Anyone remember Cussons Imperial Leather which not only came in the original creamy colour but pink and blue?

My mother used to buy it to match the pink bathroom.

Almostparadise · 26/02/2023 03:51

I loved bath cubes and pearls! Does anyone remember Japanese washing grains from
Body Shop?

Eminybob · 26/02/2023 03:55

Not sure when coloured paper was phased out but it must have been fairly recently. In desperate times when I've had to get a 2 pack from the corner shop I'm sure it was often blue.
Trying to remember if I had that problem as recently as toiletpapergate of 2020?

My mil always has patterned loo roll, often themed to match season including festive christmas paper. Not sure where she gets it from, I suspect m&s.

I also remember the medicated loo roll my granda had that came in a wee box, it was like tracing paper.

We had it at school 70s

aaahh what memories😳

benten54 · 26/02/2023 04:12

It definitely existed. I had a friend in the 80's who's parents had a bathroom that was entirely Eternal Beau. The bowl even had the pattern on it.
They had Eternal Beau toilet paper!

Yes. And Passionfruit Cleansing Gel. I can smell it now!

LilyPAnderson · 26/02/2023 04:21

That's why the As da paper is called Shades, as it used to come in different colours. They should change the name to something else if they're not going to make it in different shades any more.

LilyPAnderson · 26/02/2023 04:26

I used to like the instant coffee and chicory jars. It seems to have been replaced by all the instant frothy coffee sachets, trying to look like they were made by a coffee machine. You can buy chicory as coffee replacement in health food shops, but I liked chicory with real instant coffee.

LilyPAnderson · 26/02/2023 04:33

Wonder why they had tracing paper in public toilets? Maybe it was so people wouldn't steal it? I didn't think the recent cost of living crisis had affected me much, until I noticed the increases of essentials like toilet and kitchen rolls.

Lodgeornot · 26/02/2023 04:47

I remember, it was horrific. I would get a rash from coloured toilet paper, so would ask to borrow a friend's loo only to discover I couldn't go. Thank heavens were almost entirely white now.

daisychain01 · 26/02/2023 04:54

The reason coloured toilet paper is no longer a thing is that it will have involved dyes, which all end up in the water course. I bet the dye wasn't vegetable pigment back then either, it was probably some ghastly chemical.

They never made avocado coloured toilet paper to go with those beautiful avocado matching bathroom suites that everyone was ripping out in the 00's Grin

When Olay was Oil of Ulay.
Same as a PP square bath bombs wrapped in paper, usually lavender or rose.

Coal tar soap and vosene were the bath scents of my childhood

'Bath cubes'. A favourite present to buy for aunts and grannies from the local Spar or post office. Wrapped in foil with paper outer and cost just a few pence. Bought Aquamanda talc and bath pearls for friends.

Allthingsstrange · 26/02/2023 05:06

Anyone remember the beer shampoo which in beer barrel shaped plastic bottle and those sachets of shampoo for single use.

It was called Linco beer or something like that. MyGran had Shield soap, it contained deoderant and was marbled green/white (like her tiles). Her clothes were scented with rose shaped soap which she put in her drawers.
Christmas stockings always contained bath pearls, they all had a simliar smell, also remember the bath salts in wrapped cubes.
And yes, coloured loo roll and Izal at junior school, I was often sore and had cystitis type issues as a child, wish I'd made the connection sooner. I've seen peach coloured paper recently in a corner shop and we had M&S with printed reindeer once for a laugh.
My Gran (again!) Used to buy a coffee and Chicory extract called Camp, she only used it to make coffee cake though.

Your can still get V05 hot oil. I bought some a week ago in Superdrug. Tesco also sell it.
