Does anyone remember coloured toilet paper? Any other random disappearances?

Just this really.

I have recollections of toilet paper being available in lilac, mint, peach, baby blue. My husband thinks in lying.

its now white. I’m not sure when the colours disappeared.

I'd love some lilac loo roll to brighten up the day. I realise that this is a non-problem but I’m bored and have had a glass of wine (or two).

Has anyone got any other random disappearances that cannot be explained?

I'm sure DM and DMIL still buy peach loo roll in Waitrose

mrsfollowill · 26/02/2023 00:36

Yes- remember the blue/pink/green loo roll- you used to buy the colour that matched your bathroom suite- I lived in 2 places with 'Avocado' bathrooms in the late 80's. My Grandma had an entirely pink bathroom with the loo roll to match. Coloured boxes of tissues were also a thing.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that any toilet paper that wasn't white was awfully non-U, darling. I don't know why that disturbed me so much, as I must have realised that we were very non-U indeed. I daresay that at the time many of the upper classes still had nice healthy Izal in their lavatories.

When Olay was Oil of Ulay.
Same as a PP square bath bombs wrapped in paper, usually lavender or rose.

Coal tar soap and vosene were the bath scents of my childhood

Hoardasurass · 26/02/2023 00:38

@WhiteFire ours was gray shiny stuff on 1 side and sandpaper ruff on the other. I used to bring in andrex and sell it by the sheet I made a fortune 🤣

@VonHorne

Great minds indeed :) . I remember that body butter too. And very fruity scented soaps - a really strong tangerine scent.

itsacarveup · 26/02/2023 00:39

@DahliaMacNamara Izal wasn't an 'upper class' loo roll!

ilovesooty · 26/02/2023 00:40

We had pink Lifebuoy soap in the toilets at my primary school.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 26/02/2023 00:41

Remember when people used to have carpet in their bathroom. Vom. Hahaha.

I remember going to a trendy club in the 2000s and there being black loo roll! D friend and I wanted to steal some for our flat but we bottled it.

Ugh why isn't this available?! Would match my goth house perfectly! Grin

BruceAndNosh · 26/02/2023 00:42

I remember being in hospital in the early 1990s after an ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage 6 months later, and they had light pink toilet paper in the patient loos.
It unfortunately went a lot darker pink when wet, and I remember thinking "what idiot chose this for a gynae ward?" when the nurses regularly wanted to know if you were bleeding or not, and it was impossible to tell against this dark pink paper (and the atrocious 10W bulbs in the loos)

Nsky62 · 26/02/2023 00:49

I also remember coloured writing paper, pink, lilac and blue, and loved coloured tissues.
Used to buy butterfly yellow nouvelle kitchen roll, very pretty

MeinKraft · 26/02/2023 00:53

Someone should really invent a bright sort of rainbow toilet roll for the Frugi/Grimms sort of parents. They could advertise here on MN!

butterfly yellow nouvelle kitchen roll sounds fabulous. A Google search hasn’t helped me with visualising this but I’d definitely like some.

Simon Cowell used to buy black loo roll from Harrods. This was not THAT many years ago. It was a fancy brand that came in all sorts of jazzy colours.

(Why do I remember this shit?)

OldFan · 26/02/2023 00:59

Ah interesting, I hadn't noticed that but you're right.

I bought some sort of cheap fragranced one by mistake a while a go. It was disturbing.

TheSpottedZebra · 26/02/2023 01:01

etc voila, Renova

And the other jazzy colours.

lapasion · 26/02/2023 01:01

VO5 hot oil. They were little tubes you’d put in warm water to heat them up and then squeeze them on your hair. I wanted them so bad as a kid because the adverts made them seem so glam.

Those apricot scrub pads like Brillo pads for your face. Where did they go?

Wow, I loved these when young. Last found then in a pound shop about 15 years ago.

VonHorne · 26/02/2023 01:03

Yes the colour toilet paper is also reminding me of my nans carpeted bathroom! 😭😂🫣

Which reminds me of shake-and-vac!

The days when I thought having different types of radox was the height of sophistication

VonHorne · 26/02/2023 01:08

Yes vo5 hot oil! I remember pilfering one to try when I was a school kid, it was such a let down - plus don’t think I heated it correctly / or washed it out properly.

I think this was when I would read Sugar and Just 17 magazine - and some musical ones too, during peak Brit pop - and the crappy fold out posters

FallopianTubeTrain · 26/02/2023 01:08

My housemate at university (early 2000s) used to buy scented loo roll, it was peach coloured and patterned 😱

CountingMareep · 26/02/2023 01:08

I remember blue and pink and peach loo roll (my gran used to have pink to match her bathroom). I also remember multi coloured boxes of tissues in my childhood. I sometimes wish they’d bring them back, though they’re probably environmentally polluting or something nowadays.

NevieSticks · 26/02/2023 01:09

Yes and I hated it. White all the way - quilted or with aloe 😂

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 26/02/2023 01:10

I'm pretty sure the daily fail ran an article in the mid 90's saying that coloured bog roll gave you bum cancer. I'm sure that's why my Mum stopped buying it. Happy to be corrected.
