Does anyone remember coloured toilet paper? Any other random disappearances?

Just this really.

I have recollections of toilet paper being available in lilac, mint, peach, baby blue. My husband thinks in lying.

its now white. I’m not sure when the colours disappeared.

I'd love some lilac loo roll to brighten up the day. I realise that this is a non-problem but I’m bored and have had a glass of wine (or two).

Has anyone got any other random disappearances that cannot be explained?

cross posted - great minds think alike!

I also remember a funky body butter type cream too, it looked like whipped cream with a red gel (that looked like jam) running through it

I remember that body cream! I don't remember it being very good though.

@DahliaMacNamara Izal wasn't an 'upper class' loo roll!

Well, not unless you went to the right kind of ‘upper class’ boarding school in the 1970s.

Coloured toilet paper? No, but I do remember toilet paper from when I was a kid that we used to use for tracing paper - Jeyes medicated paper. It was like paper rather than tissue. We were always getting told off by my Mum for using it up.

frozenyoghurtyurt · 26/02/2023 01:22

I recall my mum buying recycled toilet paper. It was dark brown and was like wiping with butchers paper.

Funnily enough I was saying just this around Christmas time. When I was a child we were too poor for fancy toilet paper. I said when I grew up I'd buy myself pink or blue loo roll. I grew up. I can't buy it. 😫

You’re absolutely right. I’m remembering way back to the late 70’s, maybe the early 80’s. I can remember using loo rolls to paper someone’s house in brilliant colours.

AngeloMysterioso · 26/02/2023 01:26

I remember having purple loo roll as a kid. Loved it.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 26/02/2023 01:27

Yes, I recall seeing pink. Same with tissues!

LikeGolddust · 26/02/2023 01:30

I was just talking about this with my mum the other day. We’re in NZ though. When I was little you could get mixed packets of pale lemon, baby blue and pale pink. It was so pretty.

I prefer white - had to buy peach the other day as that was all they had for the brand/pack size I wanted.
Anyone remember the hard, shiny non-absorbent one you used to get in public toilets?

Not just public toilets - at one time this was the only type there was, unless you counted squares of newspaper threaded on a string. Yes, I’m that old.

LikeGolddust · 26/02/2023 01:36

Oh my gosh - the Vo5 tubes. I was definitely intending to buy those when I grew up.

The other thing I remember that I can’t find now I am an adult is very, very thin writing paper - I think it was called Onion skin paper and there were two types (maybe different thicknesses?) one with a blue cover and one with a red.

els6652 · 26/02/2023 01:38

Now youve said it, I remember my nana buying the peach one to match her peach and mahogany bathroom set 🤢😂 she also had all these bath powders in heart shaped glass bottles that we weren’t allowed to use and the bodyshop bath pearls in jars

MrsClatterbuck · 26/02/2023 01:38

My dm bought Andrex pink and blue. Also peach not sure about any other colours. Plus the wrapper was paper. You could also buy packs of 2.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 26/02/2023 01:39

As tovwhy is disappeared, I recall my parents switched to unbleached and white paper products to reduce toxins on the planet? They began buying only things made in our area whenever possible and switching to whole wheat bread. It was all associated with my mothers "education" via her radio and television programs, and joining a ladies fitness centre.

Pinball2023 · 26/02/2023 01:42

@Meandfour I'm sure The body shop still do fruity scented soaps

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 26/02/2023 01:45

Those bath pearls that would dissolve in bath water. And also in the fountains of the Pentagon Shopping Centre in Chatham. The fountain was about 30 feet across and surrounded by the mezzanine floor. So local school kids would throw them into the fountain from the 1st floor. It was like an Ibiza foam party every Saturday afternoon……

VeganFromSveden · 26/02/2023 01:47

As a child I was ecstatic when mum stopped buying the hard shiny stuff! At school I think I remember the hard paper had printed on each sheet “Now wash your hands”… you bloomin had to, coz you inevitably ended up with wet hands coz the paper didn’t soak up anything. Not even if you crumpled the sheets up in your hands first.
pp who remembers cut up old newspaper (in the outside loo at grandmas back in the late 50’s/early 60’s) squares… you ended up with newspaper print on your backside… I’m sure that couldn’t have been healthy for your skin.

echt · 26/02/2023 01:49

At 68 I well remember coloured toilet rooms with paper wrappings. It all began to go white with raised consciousness about pollution.

Also it was very very non-U to have coloured toilet paper.

echt · 26/02/2023 01:50

I also remember the terrible Izal and Bronco toilet paper public lavatories. Akin to wiping your backside with baking paper.

VeganFromSveden · 26/02/2023 01:50

The other thing I miss from childhood (in London was the ornate water fountains we used to be able to lean over the huge bowl like structure to turn on the tap to drink water for free.

echt · 26/02/2023 01:51

In public lavatories!! And the carbolic soap.

Spongeboob · 26/02/2023 01:52

To be fair though, when the pandemic was just starting to kick off and people were going apeshit over toilet roll, my DSis asked me to pick some up for her. She had two little ones on her own and was down to one roll. I was on the phone to her and it was 9am, I'd just done the school run. I was in Asda and in a bare aisle there were literally two packs of 4 left. I said "There's a coconut scented one I can smell standing right in front of it, or..."
As I said that a woman darted in front of my outreached hand, grabbed the coconut one and legged it. I shouted "good luck with your thrush!" and took the last unscented one for DSis.

We had that in school in the sixties terrible stuff.
When on holiday in 2008 we were in a posh supermarket which had coloured loo roll including black lime green orange yellow and a bright pink. We actually brought the orange home for the craic. They also did kitchen roll which I discovered being sold in Tesco a few years ago along with the loo roll. Think they only do the kitchen roll now but it's not very good tbh.
My dm only bought Lux soap which I have seen recently.
Anyone remember the beer shampoo which in beer barrel shaped plastic bottle and those sachets of shampoo for single use.
Plus Miners and Outdoor girl makeup
