Does anyone remember coloured toilet paper? Any other random disappearances?

Imsobored22 · 26/02/2023 00:07

Just this really.

I have recollections of toilet paper being available in lilac, mint, peach, baby blue. My husband thinks in lying.

its now white. I’m not sure when the colours disappeared.

I'd love some lilac loo roll to brighten up the day. I realise that this is a non-problem but I’m bored and have had a glass of wine (or two).

Has anyone got any other random disappearances that cannot be explained?

Thank you so much for that brilliant post OP. It was so light and fully entertaining with loads of nostalgia!

I remember all the celebrity shampoos being bought out in the 80s
My friend had Victoria whatever her surname is from Dallas. She had gorgeous hair
I remember all the fruity roll on lip glosses too, blue ice shampoo and banana conditioner from the bodyshop

BollocksToThem · 28/02/2023 18:04

Ooh and the peach range from Avon I think, everything was peach shaped

Mummys · 28/02/2023 19:14

YES! We had green to match our nice green bathroom suite 🤢

I recall a bright pink as well, we had that at school sometimes.

I do remember coloured loo paper. I read an aga saga book once , probably by Joanna Trollope, where one of the MIL type characters explained that anything other than white loo paper was common.!

Used to love bath gels. Also used to use a hot oil type product that would be applied to hair after washing. This in theory would make your hair glossy.

tsmainsqueeze · 28/02/2023 19:37

I remember 3 wishes soap it smelt lovely compared to the imperial leather we always had.
Vosene shampoo always reminds me of my family holiday as we usually bought a bottle from the onsite shop as my mom and dad forgot to bring some with us.
My nan always had andrex but used to keep izal in for my grandad as he preferred it 😬.
I remember aquamanda perfume ,avon pretty peach , bath salts and cubes ,and in my teens kept body shop in business buying bath oil pearls.

Sorry if it has already been mentioned but anyone remember Toast Toppers? Came in a little tin, can't remember who made them. They did cheese and ham which was gross but I loved the chicken and mushroom one. Toasted one side of the bread and then put the Toast Topper thickly on the other side and grilled until bubbling. Made a nice easy savoury snack and a change from cheese or beans on toast.

I bloody loved those - yesterday I bought a jar of chicken paste 😂 and ate it on hot toast and butter!

Toast toppers were VILE

Yes to Shaders and Toners, they were like the gateway drug of hair dye! After that we graduated to Wella colour mousse (which seemed to come in various shades of orange), I remember my best friends mum going nuts when we turned her towels and bath orange.

I used to buy pink toilet roll when I lived with two boys to piss them off, and I'm sure you can still get Camay soap, I had some during lockdown when everything else was sold out (Camay classic of course, classy bird!).

The one in the main picture on the home page is exactly the same colour as our's in 1971! Can't remember why we thought that purple loo roll was a good match though. The colours they're offering are fairly dull, a friend had, until recently, a suite which was the most amazing deep peacock blue/green colour, another friend had arich burgundy one.

We had Izal on a roll in the 60s, I'm not sure you could get much else

When the very first printers were available the ones we had in school were incredibily small, we used to use Izal for printing, that would be very early 80s/late70s.

Has flavoured Philadelphia / cream cheese also disappaeared? Was in a large supermarket today. They had full day, low fat and no fat cream cheese (Philadelphia and own brand) and about 20 different vegan / dairy free cream cheeses. There was no garlic and herb or chive cream cheese. I haven't had the flavoured Philadelphia for years but just fancied some today.... no luck though.

When you find those also see if Boursin Black Papper cheese is there too, I really miss it. Boursin do a herby variety.

Mummys · 28/02/2023 21:04

@DoraSpenlow that's a memory unlocked! My older sister seemed to survive purely on toast toppers in the 80's 😂

ACynicalDad · 28/02/2023 21:09

We had an avocado suite and I asked my mum to get green bog roll more than once, it looked awful, a different shade of dirty green. It definitely was a thing.

Yes. And Passionfruit Cleansing Gel. I can smell it now!

God i loved that, and dewberry shower gel and perfume

VonHorne · 28/02/2023 21:20

Oh yes those hair colour mousses!

Does anyone remember those ice cream pots with a chewing gum at the bottom? And feet shaped ice cream? And sunny d (which I think turned out to be mostly oil 🤮)

superplumb · 28/02/2023 21:23

Shaders and toners cost 49p in superdrug and it didn't matter what one I chose they made my hair orange. Then sun in made my hair a bright orange! Body shop mix your own perfume. Radox Bath salt when they gave away a £1 coin in the box. Body shop henna hair colour, loved it but it stank.

Mushroom double swiss burgers in Burger King - heavenly !

Loved these!

Our local Savers sell Camay soap but it's not in the shiny pink by wrapper anymore.

Old spice
Soap on a rope
Eau de Carbolique
Oil of Ulay
Mint coloured toilet paper
Tooth powder instead of tooth paste

All of these in my grandparent’s bathrooms

Meanwhile I craved soaps moulded in the shape of fruits, shells, animals… bath oil pearls, oval or heart shaped soaps with the muppets, or Holly Hobby sticker stuck on them… muppet shaped soaps! Oh the 80’s😀

I used to get a fancy shaped soap in my stocking at Christmas. Never used them, but hoarded them in a drawer to make my clothes smell. They ended up cracked and crusty.

The strange thing is that posh soap is now in bottles with a pump, but the poshest shampoos are now being sold in solid bars. 🤔

seven201 · 28/02/2023 21:35

Oh I'd love coloured loo roll, but my bits probably wouldn't. I do buy Christmas loo roll but it is strictly rationed. I randomly have lilac bin liners in my bedroom and was sad when they were running out as they bring me random joy. I found more in tesco and was excessively excited! I love colour.

Tracing paper toilet roll in public toilets was still going in about 2008 where I grew up.

Toilet matts. Luckily they're mostly a thing of the past!

Ilovechinese · 28/02/2023 22:08

Well Asda do this one with pics on it

Transfer picture soaps and talc in a tin from Boots...

Seriously, the older I get, the more I miss stuff ☹️
