Does anyone remember coloured toilet paper? Any other random disappearances?

Imsobored22 · 26/02/2023 00:07

Just this really.

I have recollections of toilet paper being available in lilac, mint, peach, baby blue. My husband thinks in lying.

its now white. I’m not sure when the colours disappeared.

I'd love some lilac loo roll to brighten up the day. I realise that this is a non-problem but I’m bored and have had a glass of wine (or two).

Has anyone got any other random disappearances that cannot be explained?

Love this thread.

Wouldn’t be an 80s bathroom without bath oil pearls, coloured loo roll and a bowl of dusty pot pourrie!

thinkfast · 26/02/2023 18:10

Oh his yes! Body shop bath pearls! They were soooooooooooo desirable

Winniewonka · 26/02/2023 18:52

@DorisParchment - Yes, I remember the transfer soap!

@KimberleyClark - It's only within the last year that Harmony have discontinued the the blue triangular boxes. It's still made but in a much larger tube in a white hoxwith enough for several applications. I bought Cherry Auburn a few weeks ago😀

Now, does anyone remember Knight's Castile soap?

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 26/02/2023 19:02

I used to buy lilac loo roll from Wilko just after I met (now) DH nearly 20 yrs ago. It was way softer than Andrex. Blush

Coloured tissues and cotton wool, yep, I remember them...either I'm too old now, or the world is a bit more bland than it used to be.

Used to have Bodyshop bath pearls too.

I don't think Fairy do household soap anymore. It was fab if you handwashed anything.

Siameasy · 26/02/2023 19:04

Loving this - was reminiscing about coloured cotton wool balls the other day

We had an aqua coloured bathroom suite, and matching loo roll. I wasn’t allowed to use the loo when I had my period in case of “soiling and staining” and was banished to the outside loo. My Mum loved that bathroom so much!

Does anyone remember the soaps you used to get with a transfer picture on - Holly Hobby or a pretty cottage - that used to get smaller as you used the soap?

I had a Holly Hobby doll - the little one.😻
I wonder what my mum did with her?

And I had an "It's nearly the same" seconds duvet cover with a flower fairy on it.
It got replaced with Pierrot everything thanks to some craze my mum had.
I never did like clowns.

I also remember the medicated loo roll my granda had that came in a wee box, it was like tracing paper.

I remember this it was like medicated toilet paper

APurpleSquirrel · 26/02/2023 19:37

We had a primrose yellow bathroom suite & so of course my mum bought pale yellow toilet room Grin

Oh & whoever asked about the fruit shaped soaps Body Shop used to make - they had to discontinue them as new rules were brought in saying soap can't resemble food - so no more banana shaped & scented soap Biscuit

APurpleSquirrel · 26/02/2023 19:38

Toilet paper not toilet room! Angry

CorsicaDreaming · 26/02/2023 00:19

My Grandma had this too. IZAL it was caused. Much better as tracing paper than loo paper!

Why was this ever invented, and why did anyone ever buy it?

Toilet paper that is shiny and non-absorbent, seems like the most useless product ever.

You sound fun.

Its just a random conversation that I’ve started that is lighthearted and appears to have provided a moment or twos amusement to some people.

Sorry, I didnt mean to spoil your fun, just genuinly wanted to know and dont get why you cant answer.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 26/02/2023 19:57

Peach in my house growing up. It matched the bathroom. The 90s were elite.

AlwaysLatte · 26/02/2023 20:02

I remember colourful toilet paper. Unfortunately so does my mum, and I do her shopping. Can't find her peach coloured paper these last few weeks anywhere (she hates white - I think it's a throwback to the days when white was all you could get, then suddenly these exotic colours came along). I do find it funny though, considering what it's used for!

Allthingsstrange · 26/02/2023 22:36

I don't think Fairy do household soap anymore. It was fab if you handwashed anything.

I bought a block from Poundland (I think) a good few years ago. It was great for running over the collars and cuffs of white shirts.

bendmeoverbackwards · 26/02/2023 23:19

Moth balls! I loved the smell so much. Why can’t you get them any more?

Housefullofcatsandkids · 26/02/2023 23:25

I'd forgotten they existed until I saw this. I used to get blue and lilac quite often.

snowtrees · 26/02/2023 23:28

We had a yellow bathroom suite & yellow loo roll

XenoBitch · 26/02/2023 23:30

I have not seen starfruit in any supermarket for years. Last time I saw them was about 10 years ago in the main market in Jersey.
Where have they gone?

benten54 · 27/02/2023 01:27

My parents installed a Sage green bathroom suit in the early 80's and were very self congratulatory about it as they had thumbed their nose at the fashionable/common avocado green suite.

They were FURIOUS that there was no such thing as sage loo roll and had to make do with mint green but told everyone they know how frustrated they were (as a stealth boast re the the sage green bathroom)

benten54 · 27/02/2023 01:57

Does anyone remember a make up brand sold by Woolworths and Boots in the late 80s early 90s? Looked well fancy, grey marble packaging, silver branding. The powder was in a pebble shape compact.

I thought I was the bloody bees knees when I bought that with my birthday money. Sure it started with an 's'.
Apropos of something: I was remembering Constance Carroll and Collection 2000!

ImustLearn2Cook · 27/02/2023 02:52

I vaguely remember coloured toilet paper but had completely forgotten about it until this thread. @Imsobored22 Thx for the reminder. I wonder why I never noticed its disappearance. 🧐

user1477391263 · 27/02/2023 03:16

Colored and patterned loo roll is still a big thing in Japan.

That white paper with little pink flowers is a bastard. When you are in the early stages of pregnancy, you end up having “OMG, I’m having a miscarriage” moments every time you use the loo.

Giggorata · 27/02/2023 03:40

We had the tracing paper in our loos, horrid stuff, and then I noticed when I left home, they switched to soft paper!
We also had Ponds lotion in a bottle, which was applied to every cut, scrape and sting. It smelt nice and didn't sting when applied.
Then there was a lurid green ointment in a tin called Cuticura, which was put on to soothe grazes.

ghislaine · 27/02/2023 20:16

We also had that loo paper at school. It was changed after a student petition which noted that it was also used in prisons!

Lincslady53 · 27/02/2023 21:40

I worked for a major toilet tissue manufacturer in the 80s. We had 6 colours in the range which were regularly tweaked to suit colour fashion trends. We had a think tank one year to decide what to call the new beige colour. After much deliberation, the sales team side of the meeting pushed for Champagne. The main reason being we could order loads of champagne to give away to store managers as an incentive to stock the new colour (and to have a bit surplus, for the sales team to sample)
