Does anyone remember coloured toilet paper? Any other random disappearances?

Imsobored22 · 26/02/2023 00:07

Just this really.

I have recollections of toilet paper being available in lilac, mint, peach, baby blue. My husband thinks in lying.

its now white. I’m not sure when the colours disappeared.

I'd love some lilac loo roll to brighten up the day. I realise that this is a non-problem but I’m bored and have had a glass of wine (or two).

Has anyone got any other random disappearances that cannot be explained?

@Almostparadise I actually went in to the Body Shop to ask if they still sold the rice scrub about five years ago, the assistant was about 12 and had no idea what I was wittering on about of course.

It was amazing. I remember everyone at school using Aapril as well and smelling (very heavily) of Body Shop White Musk.

katepilar · 26/02/2023 11:50

I dont get why you think "it can not be explained"?
There might be so many reasons on manufactures side, in retail or on customers' side.

zingally · 26/02/2023 11:57

Oh gosh! That's something I haven't thought of in a looooong time!

I'm pretty sure my mum bought peach loo roll when we were pre-teen kids.
And when we were little-little, our bathroom suite was green... and we may have had light green paper to match.

I feel like you can still get peach if you look hard. But you're right, white has taken over. Probably just because people don't have the coloured bathroom suites any more. Although saying that, it's probably only in the past 2-3 years that my sister and her DP have got rid of the pink suite from their 1960s semi!

DemiColon · 26/02/2023 12:01

Yes, I remember when a lot of people matched tp to their bathroom decor.

I just asked my 18 year old daughter if she's ever seen coloured tp. Sh said no, was that a thing? I said yes, in the 70s and 80s, and she said, "of course they would do that in the 70s and 80s, they were so experimental."

Oh, gosh, yes - people loved that White Musk. It was so sweet smelling though!

Has flavoured Philadelphia / cream cheese also disappaeared? Was in a large supermarket today. They had full day, low fat and no fat cream cheese (Philadelphia and own brand) and about 20 different vegan / dairy free cream cheeses. There was no garlic and herb or chive cream cheese. I haven't had the flavoured Philadelphia for years but just fancied some today.... no luck though.

Weallhaveavoice · 26/02/2023 13:17

My parents had peach toilet paper to go with the brown suite.
She thought it was terribly posh
It was still there when the house was sold recently …the suite, not the toilet paper 🤣

Frlrlrubert · 26/02/2023 13:29

In my uni house (2004-2006) each housemate bought a different colour to avoid arguments.

Blimey
did you have to carry your own toilet paper into the toilet every time
what about things like washing up liquid, how did it work.

In my day ( 80s and 90s) we shared everything….I didn’t know this was a thing these days.
My boys are at uni now, I wonder if they do this …… ?

DixonD · 26/02/2023 13:37

You can buy patterned toilet paper in M & S. We had their Christmas one.

Frlrlrubert · 26/02/2023 13:41

No it could stay there, you got murdered if you used someone else's though. It was because the boys never bought any otherwise. Washing up liquid I think we managed to share.

You can still get Boursin. Food of the gods IMO.

AFrivolousDigression · 26/02/2023 14:26

I remember pink, blue, green loo roll from the late 70's. My mum had a pink bathroom suite with black tiles and some had little flowers. She used to buy pink loo roll. In our 'outside loo' we had shiny paper or, if that ran out, cut up newspaper. I preferred the outside loo because I could see the garden and hear the birds but I hated the cut up newspapers or shiny loo roll so sometimes I would smuggle the pink one down to the outside loo.
Later we moved and my mum had an avocado green bathroom suite but then she went with white paper.
I remember:
Camay
Imperial Leather (you can still get that)probably why I like Kelly Caleche (Leather smell)
Izal loo paper at school
Lifebouy
Shield
Fairy (like a green slab that my mum used to get the dirt of my dad's shite shirt collars before it went into the 'twin tub'.
My nan had a 'roller' attached to her washing machine and this was used to squeeze out the water.
Scrubbing boards (used to rub dirty clothes against with soap before washing in the days before a 'pre-wash' was created.
Ironing boards with asbestos backing (illegal now most probably).
Timotei shampoo
Vosene
V02 oil tubes (can still get them)
Some sort of Avocado cream type shampoo I can't remember the name of
Bath cubes (usually given as a Christmas present to grannies along with little boxes of handkerchiefs with embroidered flowers or initials).
Bath oil capsules in a long plastic tube
Omo (I can't remember what it was, just remembered the name because of the letter patterning).

On the sweetie front I remember:
Gobstoppers
Shoe laces (I see these in Wilco)
Sherbert dips
Bazooker bubble gum (something like that)
Mojoes ( not sure if the name is right but they were little minty chews)
Pineapple chunks
Cola cubes
Palmer violets (pretty sure you can still get these)
Love hearts (think you can still get them)
Polos (mint and fruit flavours)
Walnut whips (pretty sure they used to be a bit 'taller' that the squatty ones you get now)
Curly wurleys
Mivveys (? ice lolly with an ice cream centre)
Tip tops (ice lolly in a rectangular shaped plastic ruler shaped tube), which if you left it to go 'warm' you could then drink. Came in all sorts of bright colours and flavours including lime green that would then make your tongue go green

I also remember a cake which I used to love - individual 'Battenburg' slice and each end was dipped in chocolate.

Ellmau · 26/02/2023 14:45

You can still buy novelty patterned (eg unicorns or santa claus) : www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=toilet+paper+pink&crid=13LNQJOFG2LDW&sprefix=toilet+paper+pink%2Caps%2C143&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

Also some very lurid plain colours: www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=toilet+paper+coloured&crid=2ZLPWZIFDMFYX&sprefix=toilet+paper+coloured%2Caps%2C109&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

But apparently not the pastels we remember.

Violinist64 · 26/02/2023 14:49

I bought an unopened box of M & S coloured writing paper from a charity shop recently. I remember it being all the rage in the eighties and always liked it.

Violinist64 · 26/02/2023 14:57

Weallhaveavoice · 26/02/2023 04:05

We had it at school 70s

aaahh what memories😳

So did we. Ours was made by a company called Newcol and bore the legend “now please wash your hands” on every sheet. Dreadful stuff.

MsFannySqueers · 26/02/2023 15:12

Thanks so much for this thread OP it’s really enjoyable. My dear late DM loved a peach toilet roll. Also the PP mentioning Linco beer shampoo I loved that. It made your hair so shiny. I could never afford the beer barrel shaped bottle. Every week or so I would buy a sachet of Linco beer shampoo. The sachet was shaped like a beer barrel also. Anyone remember Toners temporary hair colours in sachets? I used to do my hair in the bath with them and the water would turn bright red. Goodness knows what they did to my skin!

You sound fun.

Its just a random conversation that I’ve started that is lighthearted and appears to have provided a moment or twos amusement to some people.

I remember the Harmony ones in the toblerone shaped box.

DahliaMacNamara · 26/02/2023 16:25

I seem to remember that sometimes there'd be a sachet of Toners or Shaders given away as a free gift on a teen magazine. You had to be careful to buy the right one. I don't know how well they worked, because I'd use almost homeopathic proportions of the stuff alongside my usual shampoo, in a bid to make it last longer. My hair was long and thick, so I daresay the only thing that got 'shaded' in any way was my neck. And the bathroom shelf where I left the open sachet, of course.

Goodyetalso · 26/02/2023 17:14

Toners were brilliant. There doesn’t seem to be any hair ‘dye’ like that that lasts up to 3 washes any more. It was great for giving your hair a slight colour lift and adding loads of shine. There was Hint of a Tint too which did the same thing but I was a Toners girl.

I remember my mum buying me loads of sachets of Linco Beer shampoo because she remembered it from her teen years. It smelled amazing. Haven’t seen it for a very long time now.

I was thinking about washing o the other day (I KNOW. My life is an endless series of thrills) and I remembered Radion automatic which appeared in lurid orange boxes around 1989/1990ish with the worst tv adverts ever. Weirdly it seemed to sell in shedloads despite the terrible advertising. I don’t know when it disappeared but it just have been a long time ago as I haven’t seen it for ages. Strange because it was so popular. Also, Organics shampoos in the green bottles (smelled really nice) - mega popular, everyone seemed to use it, suddenly disappeared l which never made sense to me.

It's normally available, although things are a bit weird lately. We've certainly had the herb one recently and DD likes the chocolate one.

Noo, they still exist! I was in weeny Tesco metro this week and they had black pepper, herbs, garlic and chive and sweet chili. I bought one of each except the garlic and chive. I think you were just unlucky and some bastards had been in there buying it all up.

Jourdain11 · 26/02/2023 17:56

Oh, and they also had a dairy milk one - chocolate Philadelphia. A bit weird!
