Yes I can taste the difference. No it’s not the same great taste.

Put out a lower sugar or salt free version if you want but leave my shit alone!!

I bought some red liquorice cable sweet things they are now vegan omg they were horrific I had to freeze them to try and get any kind of sensible texture.

Namechangetimesigh · 24/02/2023 20:22

It's not just in the supermarket - McDonalds chips started tasting off last year. Nuggets had gone the same way last time I treated myself, but I happened to have a little salt sachet in the car from some long-forgotten meal. Problem solved, both back to tasting lovely. It's supposed to be a treat, surely a bit of salt is ok?

Fcuktherain · 24/02/2023 20:23

Sanpellagrino, the shops sell the tastefully light version, Amazon sell the sugar version, look for the darker cans.

Heinz baked beans......I opened a small tin the other day and they've messed with them - and they weren't reduced sugar/salt ones, they were regular ones. Bleugh

I can’t eat Heinz beans anymore. All of them taste far too sweet. Branstons are ok (at the mo)

They should stop twatting about with processed food. Life is depressing and changed enough post-COVId without ruining stuff like food that we used to rely on to stay the same.

ready meals are now shockingly low quality and rank. Except for the v expensive ones. But even those, you can tell they’ve cut back on some aspects of it.

fhe problem is that with the energy crisis and Brexit and other supply issues, manufacturers are looking to save money, so reduce the size of stuff or change ingredients to make it stay as cheap as possible to the consumer so that they still make their margins. But once the product is changed for the worse, even if the supply issues improve, the product is permanently changed to the shitter version. And the youngsters grow up knowing different. I remember my grandparents moaning about this to their peers: “ah remember such and such a product? They don’t make them like that anymore, it doesn’t taste as nice now.” I used to think they were just moaning for the sake of it, and exaggerating but now I know exactly what they meant.

Well if they've fiddled with the Squares they need to issue a profits warning. I shall find salty/sour snacks elsewhere (hopefully).

Co op own kettle type crisps will strip your tongue of its receptors with its glorious salty vingerary joy.

You didn’t pick up the 45% less salt version? Because I did that thinking they’d just messed with the original but turns out it was a different product (and definitely did taste different), original was still there too.

I was going to say this - I picked them up by accident and they’re AWFUL.

I still mourn the loss of full sugar coco pops. They taste like cardboard now. We found some original versions recently in Malta and I still regret not filling up my suitcase

I bought Sunpat peanut butter a while ago from the local Londis and it was disgusting, soooooo sweet, absolutely inedible. Yeuch, I’m shuddering at the memory of it.

Oh I stopped eating that years ago for that reason. It was disgusting if you wanted it for a savoury flavour (I like it on toast as a light lunch or snack). The Whole Earth one is the only one I’ll buy.

Applesandcarrots · 24/02/2023 20:38

LadyKenya · 24/02/2023 20:10

I was thinking the same thing. It is all processed rubbish that is being messed about with. It is all crap. No loss in not eating it.

It may come as a surprise but many, MANY people manage to eat wholefoods, cook, make their own, even grow their own, yet still have sometimes some ultraprocessed foods like crisps.

Today I had/am having salad (and yes, it had tomato and cucumber) with chicken (homegrilled) and yogurt (homemade), lime, chives (homegrown) and sriracha.
Pomegranate for snack
Beer (loads) and frozen sweet potato chips with chicken wings and crisps.
Setimes I fancy chocolate. Sometimes I fancy a cup of bovril.
Tomorrow I will have homemade bonebroth soup with vegetables and rice noodles (processed) for dinner. Salad with chickpea (dried one i cooked) feta and pomegranate molasses (processed, but I can make my own). I might have some chocolate I have here.
Oooh, the day after tomorrow it might be frozen pizza for dinner. The day after, I might fancy chicken nuggets. Or sumac fish with zaatar veg.

People can eat balanced diet which includes whole foods, processed and ultra processed.

Not having some version of orthorexia is not subpar lifestyle.

Basically all juice expect normal coke. I want sugar, not sweetener 😔

For example lemonade:
Diet lemonade = sweetener
Lemonade = sweetener
I don't care about sugar tax. I'm a healthy weight and have no fillings. I'm a grown adult. I'd like the option to pay extra for a lovely glass of sugary lemonade. Ditto Dr Pepper, schloer, appletiser etc. Coke is the last man standing

Applesandcarrots · 24/02/2023 20:46

I have a defence system afte major disappointment about childhood sweet.

I refuse to buy things I fondly remember now. DH laughs when I am looking at something saying "awww I used to LOOOOVE this". He then says to just get one then. The fuck am I! Not going to ruin the memory of it!

I will never forget when he first time he came to my country with me and I got us one sweet talking about how amazing it is. Took one bite, apologised and died inside.

Fuck you Mondelez

It's to bring products in line with the government's nutrition directive which says that products with high salt, fat and sugar can't be promoted by retailers. The retailers and manufacturers want to be able to promote their products as that's where the profit lies and so they have been forced to change their recipes so that they can promote and keep profits high.

A particular type of Ocado ham. It was expensive but really good quality. They have 'improved' it and now it is just wet, regular packed ham. If I wanted cheaper ham I would have bought it, I paid for the quality.

Also, Horlicks. Disappointment in a mug.

Yes! Can’t get decent ham anywhere now, it’s all fake and slimy.

saltrock123 · 24/02/2023 21:09

Agree with previous poster Twiglets are shit ! Opened a bag today and very disappointed taste rank !

Lostinthesouth · 24/02/2023 21:11

Hardly anything tastes right these days, I assumed it was some sort of post-Covid thing. Reading these posts makes me think perhaps not.
But out of the many things that have been interfered with or not available anymore, the worst for me is Ribena.
I wouldn’t drink it as a regular drink, a bit too sweet and expensive but when you have the flu or a cold or etc there is nothing like a hot Ribena.

That's good news. So all ultraprocessed food will soon be inedible. Hopefully it will save the NHS billions.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 24/02/2023 18:22

I used to eat everything that everyone has mentioned, but I now very rarely eat ultraprocessed food and drink.

I actually think that everything mentioned should not be sold at all as it is so bad for us and is killing us.

So it is good that people don't like the taste any more.

People with diabetes were advised to drink lucozade when having a hypo - it could literally save their life. Then lucozade removed the sugar and replaced it with sweeteners without telling anyone, making it useless to diabetics to counter a hypo. Is that reason why it's a dumb move good enough for you or does it dent your pious and superior attitude?

I thought it was just me with the salt & vinegar crisps. Glad to know it's now & other people think they're weak flavoured now.
