DP thinks my bag is 'childish and showy'

I'm originally from Sweden and back home people of all ages carry these bags. Last week, I decided to purchase a new KÃ¥nken to replace the one I've had for 10 years. Picked this colour (www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/kanken/kanken-bags/kanken-rainbow-mini?v=F23621%3a%3a7323450792466) this time around to replace the black one I had, and DH absolutely hates it. I use it primarily for dog walks and trips to the local cafe/shops and he thinks it's too showy/childish and feels 'embarrassed' when I take it with me when we go out for coffee together. Confused

AIBU to think that it's just a bag? It's not that bad, is it?

My bag is currently a pink bag with a Princess crown on it.

StrawberryJam4Ever · 28/02/2023 20:45

At first I thought it was rather childish, & expensive, but I looked & looked, & looked again, & decided that I now rather like it. It bought back a lovely memory of a small backpack I once had which was a lovely yellowy orangey colour. I used it for holidays. I’ve got a collection of leather backpacks that I love.

nopuppiesallowed · 28/02/2023 20:59

I have a yellow leather handbag which I carry round all summer. And an orange biker jacket. I don't tend to wear them at the same time....I'm 71.

Is he always prone to overreaction, when it comes to fashion accessories?

Fansandblankets · 26/02/2023 21:58

It’s her DH not DS that hates it.

Still her choice.

Still her choice.

Well of course it is. But you said

“Buy your bag and enjoy it. Your ds is not your boss: in fact it's the other way round. Be patient: you can get your revenue when his grandchildren are embarrassed by him “

@bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza

are you 5?

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 01/03/2023 08:36

No not 5 but I don't care what people think about what I wear, my hobbies or what bag I use. Got too much going on to care.

LuckySantangelo35 · 01/03/2023 08:38

@ThisMama1

you look amazing!

I'm 71 with red hair and I absolutely love your skirt. Please - where did you get it? I'll never have a tattoo now, but that skirt is gorgeous and would go brilliantly with the orange biker jacket my daughter hates.

If I wear my pusheen T-shirt and find a yellow bag, can we all go for coffee together?

nopuppiesallowed · 01/03/2023 09:10

😅😅😅😅

CeriB82 · 01/03/2023 09:54

No my cup of tea, i do think bags like that are childlike.

but im not the one using it, and would not pass a comment on to you in your face.

each to their own

I would like to refer my learnéd friend to my previous remark.

You said it was her DS, instead of her DH. The other poster just clarified that. No need to be snippy.

journeyofinsanity · 01/03/2023 12:57

I can't imagine being with a grown man who feels embarrassed about such non issues. Ironic that he talks about being childish

VoldemortsKitten · 01/03/2023 15:22

Would go with my trainers! I like a splash of colour too OP

Are these comfy?? I keep eyeing them up but am never quite sure, I love Vans trainers but converse hurt my back so I’m never sure if they’ll fall into that category and be v flat!

Love that you still have bright hair, why have a hair colour you don’t like simply because you were born in a certain year..?

if it’s the tiger print one it’s actually a slip dress. They are so versatile as you can wear a top under them or over them, dress them up or down. I bought this one from Vinted, there’s some amazing bargains

nopuppiesallowed · 01/03/2023 20:00

Thank you! I'll check Vinted and see what I can find.
I'm a natural redhead. It's slowly fading but when it turns white, I'll go the full Judy Dench. However I'm aiming to still wear all the colours I've always loved. Why should anyone become like a beige painted wall just because of a couple of numbers?

Letsbekindplease · 01/03/2023 20:02

Your hubbys is being unreasonable. I got one of these for Christmas and it’s my favourite ever bag. Not same colour but I think your colours are fine. Enjoy.

mewkins · 01/03/2023 20:14

DDivaStar · 23/02/2023 21:55

Yes the yellow one is a bit mr tumble ! No one buys yellow bag to blend in so I know what your H is saying.

Why should anyone want to blend in though? Is that our purpose in life? To be inconspicuous?

Johnisafckface · 01/03/2023 20:17

I don't like it and I do think it looks like a kids bag, but I'm not carrying it so I wouldn't care. And I wouldn't care if someone I was hanging out with was carrying it. I'm friends with all kinds of people and they usually have some style that I dont particularly like but why should I care, it doesn't effect me. And i'm sure they don't like some of the things I wear either.

mewkins · 01/03/2023 20:17

roastedtomatoes · 23/02/2023 22:06

He's not homophobic. I think it's primarily the yellow that he thinks is too much as I mentioned that I was going to get the black or red rainbow one and he said 'those work'. We're usually quite low key with colours and I think this is the brightest thing in our house now. 😂

It's interesting your use of the word 'we'. Is he concerned that you having a bright bag reflects badly on him ?

mewkins · 01/03/2023 20:40

Brefugee · 24/02/2023 08:44

Showed him this thread and he has grudgingly accepted that this will be my version of his five toed shoes — other party hates it but it's there to stay

urgh, he has no taste (apart from his choice in wife, obvs)
but - how do you wear those shoes? do you have special socks? doesn't it make it uncomfortable and thick in the toe area?

I was wondering the same. I can't even wear normal flip flops so I can only imagine the many many blisters these would generate.

Count me in. I'm 61 and am the proud owner of a 🌈 rainbow coat. Whenever I wear it I get nothing but compliments.
We are only here once. Life is too short and , at the moment too grim, to worry about whatever people think.
