DP thinks my bag is 'childish and showy'

I'm originally from Sweden and back home people of all ages carry these bags. Last week, I decided to purchase a new KÃ¥nken to replace the one I've had for 10 years. Picked this colour (www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/kanken/kanken-bags/kanken-rainbow-mini?v=F23621%3a%3a7323450792466) this time around to replace the black one I had, and DH absolutely hates it. I use it primarily for dog walks and trips to the local cafe/shops and he thinks it's too showy/childish and feels 'embarrassed' when I take it with me when we go out for coffee together. Confused

AIBU to think that it's just a bag? It's not that bad, is it?

Lots of school kids have them around here, I had no idea they were so expensive! How do you pronounce Fjallraven!?

TheChosenTwo · 23/02/2023 21:54

The yellow one is quite childish and bright - and that’s why I love it - I have one too! It’s so cheerful, use it as my work bag as carries my laptop and other crap and though I don’t have far to carry it I like that it has 2 straps for my dodgy back if I felt the need to wear it that way. I’m 38, way older than the college kids I see wearing these but it’s practical which is mainly why I use it.
tell your dh to piss off!

arghtriffid · 23/02/2023 21:54

I'm not keen but so what. I mean my DH used my DD's discarded fake one she got from ebay as a swimming bag for a while - it was grey.

Sparkleshine21 · 23/02/2023 21:55

Loads of people have them, they are trendy in older people (over 20) so not just for kids!

DDivaStar · 23/02/2023 21:55

Yes the yellow one is a bit mr tumble ! No one buys yellow bag to blend in so I know what your H is saying.

YesYou · 23/02/2023 21:55

The presenters of show me, show me deffo have your bag OP

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 23/02/2023 21:55

Tell dh your new bag thinks he's showy/childish and is embarrassed to be seen with him 😂

user375242 · 23/02/2023 21:55

It's not just a thing in Sweden anymore, I see those bags absolutely everywhere on people of all ages in all different colours. I first noticed them about 10 years ago only on adults and now I see them on children too and hundreds of them when I go into a city or somewhere busy like a zoo. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at an adult with a bright yellow one with rainbow. They are mostly bright colours. Has your DH been living under a rock?

Silvergone · 23/02/2023 21:56

He thinks it looks like gay pride rainbows (which it does a bit) but doesn’t want to sound homophobic by saying that.

roastedtomatoes · 23/02/2023 21:56

Honestly I bought the yellow rainbow one on impulse when I saw it because I was bored of my usual black/grey/navy wardrobe. It's definitely different but I've grown to love it. Blush

I’ve seen all ages with these bags.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 23/02/2023 21:51

Absolutely nothing wrong with it. I would say it has a fun, youthful feel, but certainly isn't childish. Your DH thinks it's "showy" - well, what's wrong with a splash of colour? Or does he object to the logo and rainbow handles? If he's ok with colour, maybe try Roka bags? Roka bags

Er. No. Even if it does look a bit much why should OP get another bag just to please him?

Shoxfordian · 23/02/2023 21:57

I also think it looks like a child’s bag but you do you op - hope it’s not some latent homophobia though

ferntwist · 23/02/2023 21:58

It’s so cute! I love it. He needs to lay off

PenguinsandHippos · 23/02/2023 21:58

I’m usually a very boring, grey / beige sort of person, but even I like it. It’s cheerful. You enjoy it.

FettleOfKish · 23/02/2023 21:58

Kanken's are cool. Your DP is not cool. HTH.

Seriously, I was in London the other week - with my new Fjallraven backpack - and noticed how many people of all ages and styles had Kanken bags on the tube. Hard-wearing, reasonably priced, personality demonstrated through colour choice. What's not to love?

ClimbingRoseBush · 23/02/2023 21:58

Loads of people have these bags. Popular with both students and mums round here.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 23/02/2023 21:58

Keep the bag,
Get rid of the DP.
Problem solved!

Dartmoorcheffy · 23/02/2023 21:59

It's absolutely fine. Its not as if its for a funeral.

ClimbingRoseBush · 23/02/2023 21:59

Silvergone · 23/02/2023 21:56

He thinks it looks like gay pride rainbows (which it does a bit) but doesn’t want to sound homophobic by saying that.

Ah yeah, I think this might be right. The bags are so popular that it would be weird to object to them. Is he homophobic?

Mouthfulofquiz · 23/02/2023 22:00

He sounds a bit weird to embarrassed by somebody else’s bag 😂
what a dweeb.

Eyerollcentral · 23/02/2023 22:00

I think it’s way too childish for an adult sorry. I quite like the design of those bags but yellow w rainbow trim is very juvenile. I would be surprised by any one over the age of 8 choosing it.

FreezyWater · 23/02/2023 22:00

Oh, I love it!!!! That might have to be my present to myself when I get through my therapy.

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 23/02/2023 22:00

It looks like a child’s school bag, but if you like it that’s all that matters.

FettleOfKish · 23/02/2023 22:00

*just to add to my previous post, I mean reasonably priced for the wear you'll get from it.
