DP thinks my bag is 'childish and showy'

I'm originally from Sweden and back home people of all ages carry these bags. Last week, I decided to purchase a new KÃ¥nken to replace the one I've had for 10 years. Picked this colour (www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/kanken/kanken-bags/kanken-rainbow-mini?v=F23621%3a%3a7323450792466) this time around to replace the black one I had, and DH absolutely hates it. I use it primarily for dog walks and trips to the local cafe/shops and he thinks it's too showy/childish and feels 'embarrassed' when I take it with me when we go out for coffee together. Confused

AIBU to think that it's just a bag? It's not that bad, is it?

@Emotionalsupportviper - got you. I mostly agree. But referring to the rainbow flag being appropriated by the term that poster used is offensive to me. Because it's been the flag of the LGB community for around 45 years and it's nothing to do with the slur that person used.

I'm GC, myself - I will support LGB (and their adoption of the rainbow to include any and all adult human sexualities) to my dying day, but feel that the T is open to misuse/ abuse, and that it isn't a sexuality, so shouldn't be included. Others disagree with me. I can see how the rainbow is spoiled for some people. I regard looking for offence in every little comment as being worse.

I'm not sure that I would regard "gender mob" as a slur - it certainly hasn't the sort of negative connotations associated with it that (say) "TERF" has. To misquote Freud, sometimes a remark is just a remark.

When you’re 20 you care what everyone thinks, when you’re 40 you stop caring what everyone thinks, when you’re 60 you realize no one was ever thinking about you in the first place. ;)

When you're 70 you realise that no-one can even see you any more, let alone think about you . . .

I think it's fab! I love the Loungefly bags and have a different Disney one, themed for each season as well as the new Elf one for Christmas. They are not subtle. Or grown up. Or classy for that matter. But they make me smile and people love them and comment (positively) on them when I wear them. They are made for adults, as is your bag, who like to not always take themselves seriously or who like to have a bit of fun with what they wear in even a small way.
Ignore your partner, there's nothing wrong with being a little childish and fun anyway!

Mabiscuit · 25/02/2023 09:11

Most people in my work wear backpacks and my mum was disgusted when she saw me wearing one after work! They're apparently only for school children and uni students. I ignored and wear mine daily because I love it. So practical.

Notsoivorytower · 25/02/2023 09:18

IMO You do you! 😉

Step99 · 25/02/2023 09:25

Which one brings you more Joy? Dp or your bag? Ditch accordingly 😂

LimaCharlieHotelPapa · 25/02/2023 10:21

If I saw you out with this bag I wouldn't think either of those things. And it's a handbag, not like your whole outfit is coordinated to match (and even if it was, if you like it that's all that matters! Not hurting anyone).

Skyeglitterfairy · 25/02/2023 10:51

Its fab, I want one!

I love the yellow, tell you OH he's a boring old fart, then decree that you want the silliest disney Loungefly bag you can find :)

Giggorata · 25/02/2023 10:57

It's a lovely bag, enjoy it and tell the miserable old git to do one.

I am in my sixties and have a lovely silly bag that looks just like a puppy. It wasn't expensive and isn't a name, but I just took a fancy to it. So there. 🙂

roastedtomatoes · 25/02/2023 11:51

DH is lovely and not controlling at all. He just always thinks that for clothing and furniture neutral, 'practical' colours are best. Since we met more than a decade ago in uni, I haven't seen him in anything other than black, navy, or khaki!

Anyway, after his initial bout of morning grump from being blinded by colour and realising that nobody stares because nobody cares, he's used to the yellow now. He still thinks though that his shoes are less bizarre than a brightly coloured bag. 🤣

Personally wouldn’t be seen out with a bright yellow rainbow bag… because I think it drawers too much attention. I can see what your husband means. I’d be embarrassed if a friend came out for coffee with that bag

ChrystalJollybottom · 25/02/2023 12:30

At least you won’t lose it!

Beautiful3 · 25/02/2023 14:07

I like yellow, it look's nice. Don't worry about your embarrassed husband, he'll get over it. My husband only dresses in grey/white/black or blue. He nearly died when I bought him a pink top! But now he quite likes wearing pink.

LovelyIssues · 25/02/2023 14:07

My daughter has one for school, she is in year 8. I wouldn't choose one for myself but if you like it and it's practical, who cares!

Manthide · 24/02/2023 19:46

He wouldn't like me then, I just pick up any old rucksack when I go out - normally one of the kids old ones - think purple intergalactic space , bright red graffiti! And I'm on the slippery slope to 60. I have never paid any attention to other people's bags or clothes though those shoes seem a bit out there. But if he likes them ...

I want a bright rucksack for church to hold my large print hymnbook and middle in yours sound perfect. I love colourful rucksacks and I’m 56.

Stealthfart · 25/02/2023 14:49

I’ve got one but it doesn’t have rainbow straps and now I’m sad.

Tlittle · 25/02/2023 14:55

That's kind of cool. I have a pushed bag. Ok maybe two...

Tlittle · 25/02/2023 14:56

Always4Brenner · 25/02/2023 15:08

Just found a yellow rucksack I’ll be getting next week.

I think nowadays
people are turning to backpacks because they’re better or posture/backs than shoulder bags

CountryMouse22 · 25/02/2023 15:21

My only comment is I can see the yellow one getting grubby quite quickly. prefer the dark green one. But perfectly OK bag.

fancydressjess · 25/02/2023 15:54

Well most of my wardrobe has the "kids TV presenter" vibe, so he definitely wouldn't be able to handle me....
He's got off lightly with just a funky bag, jeez......
Life is too short to be dull and boring in case you look "childish".... Why should kids get all the fun?!

Justbefair · 25/02/2023 17:42

Hej! Jag älsker fjallraven! Me, dh and dc all have one in different colours! In Scandinavia and on the continent people seem to dress more for the weather and being outdoors than showy and glam in my experience, which I completely prefer! Xx

He is definitely being unreasonable about the shoes! Those toed shoes would 100% draw more stares than a yellow backpack?

HeckyPeck · 25/02/2023 17:56

! Not ?
