DP thinks my bag is 'childish and showy'

I'm originally from Sweden and back home people of all ages carry these bags. Last week, I decided to purchase a new Kånken to replace the one I've had for 10 years. Picked this colour (www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/kanken/kanken-bags/kanken-rainbow-mini?v=F23621%3a%3a7323450792466) this time around to replace the black one I had, and DH absolutely hates it. I use it primarily for dog walks and trips to the local cafe/shops and he thinks it's too showy/childish and feels 'embarrassed' when I take it with me when we go out for coffee together. Confused

AIBU to think that it's just a bag? It's not that bad, is it?

I just bought a Lilac one, with white straps, thanks to this thread!

Personally wouldn’t be seen out with a bright yellow rainbow bag… because I think it drawers too much attention. I can see what your husband means. I’d be embarrassed if a friend came out for coffee with that bag

If I was your friend I wouldn't stay your friend for long. What a pathetic thing to say. I couldn't care less what sort of bag a friend came out for coffee with - if I even noticed. Not everyone aspires to be a mouse hiding in the corner as you seem to think they should.

bringincrazyback · 26/02/2023 13:14

Question to those who think a bag like this draws attention to oneself. Why do you see drawing attention to oneself as a bad thing? Are we all supposed to blend into the background like a herd of neutral-toned unassuming sheep, and if so, why? Genuinely curious. 🤔

OldFan · 26/02/2023 13:38

I really don't think this brown colour is bold at all @roastedtomatoes . Then there are a few dainty rainbow straps. That's it. If this offends him then there must be a wide range of items he would disapprove of you wearing were you to try.

People are going on about the yellow bag but that's not the one you're talking about, is it? Confused

Grapewrath · 26/02/2023 13:45

It’s gorgeous! Your DH sounds a bore

TeaFagsand · 26/02/2023 18:52

Not my cup of tea, but your money; your choice. (Nothing wrong with it and as a carrier of a Shaun the Sheep back pack I am totally unqualified to criticise!)

In my country, England, we consider it to be a perk of parenthood to embarrass your children.

Buy your bag and enjoy it. Your ds is not your boss: in fact it's the other way round. Be patient: you can get your revenue when his grandchildren are embarrassed by him 😋

I meant homophobic.
As rainbows are commonly associated as a pride symbol I think this is why he is actually finding issue

She hasn’t even got a rainbow bay, she’s got the yellow one so not sure how homophobia is linked to the colour yellow…

I'm not wearing what I wore when I was a teenager, that's for sure. What's your point? People can wear whatever they want but I've found it helpful to consider how ageing affects aesthetics.

I’m 41 & wear things I wish I’d had the confidence to wear when I was a teenager. Including having bright orange hair & wearing shit loads of animal print, short skirts, Docs etc. Sod changing into a whole different person simply because I’m a year older & other people have sort weird age chart uniform that they think strangers should adhere to

It's like a child's bag and if I saw a grown up wearing it I would assume they had special needs. Maybe that's why he's embarrassed.

Ableism now. Wow. This thread is the gift that just needs giving isn't it? Having a cute little bag as an adult = special needs. I can't even.

Having a cute bag is ‘special needs’ and something to be embarrassed about. Why should anyone be embarrassed about a disability? What a weird thought process, massively ableist & really insulting

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 26/02/2023 21:02

I love it in yellow

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 26/02/2023 21:24

I am absolutely mind blown that people would be embarrassed going out with someone that used a yellow bag 😂

Get over your ridiculous selves fucking hell 😂

Fansandblankets · 26/02/2023 21:26

I’m struggling to understand why he cares or what it’s got to do with him 🤷

It’s her DH not DS that hates it.

TheOrigRights · 26/02/2023 22:48

@roastedtomatoes did you happen to be at Wembley Park underground yesterday?
I followed someone wearing the exact bag you have been talking about.

CarpetSlipper · 27/02/2023 00:34

He’s being massively unreasonable to be judging anyones attire when he’s wears 5 toed shoes.

bringincrazyback · 27/02/2023 08:43

@ThisMama1 I've got hair envy now, that looks awesome! Great outfits too.

This just about sums it up.

Glad he’s grudgingly seen the light.

I'm 71 with red hair and I absolutely love your skirt. Please - where did you get it? I'll never have a tattoo now, but that skirt is gorgeous and would go brilliantly with the orange biker jacket my daughter hates.

pictoosh · 27/02/2023 16:44

I totally disagree with him about neutral, muted colours being best. How the hell are they? There are so many beautiful, flattering colours to choose from why on earth would you limit yourself to a dull handful? I mean if that’s your preference, fine…but don’t be curtailing anyone else’s perfectly normal enjoyment of colour over it you boring fuck.

Mumof3andshattered · 27/02/2023 17:20

Don't understand at all what the issue is. Why does he think everyone is giving the slightest fuck what you wear? I can't be the only one with their own life that means what other people are doing in their has absolutely no relevance to me unless it actually affects what I'm doing ? Wear a yellow bag, a ping bag, a rainbow bag and even knickers on your head...none of anyone else's business.

The last time most people care what other people think of them tends to be in high school...Has your hubby not managed to mature beyond that age ?

whatsup00 · 27/02/2023 18:56

I don't like it because I don't really like the colour yellow, but I think it's ridiculous that he tries to dictate what bag you can wear and is also embarrassed by a bag. It's not like it's a big six foot plastic frog or something.

LadyFlumpalot · 28/02/2023 11:02

Thanks to this thread and the OP I decided to turf everything out of my boring, black, laptop bag last night and start using my bright BRIGHT pink Kanken bag for my corporate management job instead. It's definitely brightened up my morning so far and I had several positive comments on the school run and the way into work. It makes me happy and that's a good thing on a cold Tuesday morning.

Cam22 · 28/02/2023 11:07

It’s cute and nice. Your OP is being silly

24KaratCucumber · 28/02/2023 17:36

@LadyFlumpalot
Yay. I see bright Kankens here and there, some Really bright Roka bags too, they always make me smile... on the inside .. cause I'd look like a grinning fool otherwise.. 😁

I wonder what the OP's DH would have to say about my toting around a bubblegum-pink Roka in my mid-fifties.😂
