I’m a failed contestant.. was one of the 3 and wasn’t picked..am not bitter though ! Ha I got to meet Cilla and our Graham with his ‘quick reminder’… my kids find it hilarious as husband ‘kindly’ transferred it off VHS and onto YouTube for posterity..hmmmm

Cattenberg · 01/05/2023 21:21

I’ve posted before about the cocky boy who was one of the bullies at our secondary school. He thought the world of himself and could be quite cruel to girls he thought were beneath him. My friend once sent him a Valentine’s card and when he realised who it was from, he ripped it up in front of her.

Well, a few years later, when Blind Date was near the end of its run, Mr Cocky appeared on the show as a pickee. By then Blind Date had a nasty “date or ditch” twist.

Mr Cocky was chosen by the picker, the screen went back and the picker was asked by Cilla if she wanted to date him or ditch him. She ditched him 🤣.

Remember the first Blind Date wedding?

No idea if there were any more after that but the original couple still do interviews about it every now and then.

They're over 30 years married and they're still together.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/05/2023 21:29

They'd find it very difficult to do Blind Date these days, what with all the different genders and identities. Obviously, nowadays, they would do gay ones as well as straight ones; but other than that, the sheer number of permutations that they'd have to cover to avoid offending those with very exacting specifications - as well as how people identify not necessarily matching how others they would wish to date would perceive them to be. At least on something like Naked Attraction, you can see what/who you'd actually be getting before making a decision.

Does anybody else remember Friends Like These with Ant & Dec - with a group of girls and a group of boys competing against each other? The games in the main part of the show could be a bit dull at times, but the final was always tense - wondering if team-mates who had got safely through would risk their own in-the-bag holiday in an attempt to redeem those who didn't get through, so as to get their whole gang out there together.

MXVIT · 01/05/2023 21:30

SHES A JOURRRRRRRRNALIST LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

That's it. That's all I have to say.

Yes, I particularly remember the group of women who chose not to gamble and left one of their friends behind! Ian Wright said he didn’t think a team had ever chosen not to gamble before. It seemed especially unfair, because the woman left behind had won her task.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 01/05/2023 21:58

Ah, yes, I'd forgotten that Ian Wright took over hosting duties from Ant & Dec later on.

I suppose the makers couldn't really take the moral high ground when the integral part of the show's final was the jeopardy of will they/won't they do the dirty on their friends. A bit like Goldenballs with the split or steal, although that was strangers and not friends.

Terrible thing to do, though - how could you properly enjoy a mates' holiday knowing for the whole duration that one of you was at home, when they potentially could have been there enjoying it with you? It would probably represent the end of your friendship and forever change the dynamic of your whole group.

They just can't make shows like this anymore. I was a young teen in the 90s and Saturday nights were just fab - family fortunes, Blind Date, Gladiators, You Bet, Stars in their Eyes!

I loved watching Gladiators and Blind Date on Saturday evenings. Much better than the crap on TV now.

SergeiL · 01/05/2023 22:24

When I was at Uni, we’d watch Blind Date on a Saturday night with a cheap bottle of red, then hit the town drinking pints of cider for the rest of the night. Classy! I loved it! I always thought Cilla was a total legend so am always gutted to see her feature so heavily on the nasty celeb posts.

Womencanlift · 01/05/2023 22:37

Anyone remember the karaoke style show on channel 5 that was hosted by Suggs? I am sure Barry from Eastenders was one of the team captains. It was probably late 90s as I used to watch it before going out

So cheesy but great for a Saturday evening

ReadtheReviews · 01/05/2023 23:07

It was good until they started scripting the answers. When they had to actually think of a reply not just spout memories cheesy nonsense.

I'm about to make your day, jacuzzi
Name changed for this, obviously. My dad's techie mate edited the episodes so it's only my segments but I did pull one of the "pickees" on the second show when I came back to do the sofa chat Blush maybe I should do an AMA

Ahhh I just watched this, I was hoping you’d pick number two. Number one totally misled you by saying he looked like Ronan! Was that why you picked him? What an experience though! Glad you had some luck finding someone nice on the second show.

OurClurfromBristol · 02/05/2023 19:15

I knew I should've picked number 2 Blush I had plenty of feedback in the pub at university that night to the same effect, too Grin

Wow that’s really interesting, when did you appear on it ?

I was browsing YouTube today and Blind Date from the 80s came up..

CranfordScones · 30/11/2024 22:12

I recently saw a video made on the streets of NYC where they were approaching random couples and asking them how they met. One couple they approached happened to be Sue and Alex - the Blind Date wedding couple - still together 30+ years later! I think they were in the media a while back because they renewed their vows, and they looked soooo happy still. Can't find the video. Anyone remember them??

I saw that the other day too

CranfordScones · 30/11/2024 22:47

It was actually in London - it was a TikTok video, so I won't link to it, but the couple talk about it here - - on Good Morning Britain. They're so lovely.

Oh, You Bet! I still think about that programme from time to time, an episode where a boy said he could identify car models from their silhouettes. Does anybody remember that episode? Was it silhouettes?

Bizarrely I remember this very well and I also seem to recall that his name was Pratinder (sp?) and they called him the Great Pratinder. I remember it so we'll be ause my son was small then and could also do the car recognition thing. It was one of the more positive signs of what we suspected (later confirmed) was autism

Spottycarousel · 01/12/2024 12:02

Paul2023 · 02/12/2024 19:45

You Bet ! is back next Saturday! Same format I think..

Takes me back to the 90s. Matthew Kelly has been replaced though !

Paul2023 · 02/12/2024 19:51

Blind Date back in the early days , attracted something like 17 million viewers. I suppose it’s down to a few factors though, no internet, only 4 channels to pick from , no Sky tv. That’s probably why tv shows had bigger audiences.

Its sounds weird but the contestants seemed like just normal people and looked normal ( for the time).

Now it would all be fame hungry wannabes who are only on it for insta followers and their 15 minutes of fame.

Hello Cilla, I’m Paul from East Sussex !
Cilla- what do you do for work Paul?
Me- I’m a civil servant Cilla!

Paul2023 · 02/12/2024 19:55

I’ve always been a bit of a people watcher, been a bit curious about people.

Does anyone else ever watch these types of shows and wonder what happened to these people? Who did they eventually marry ? How old are they now ? What are they doing now?

Or am I a massive weirdo ?!

TeaInBed321 · 02/12/2024 20:00

I auditioned for it!! (I wasn't interesting or pretty enough to make the show! But I tried!!)
