Fell down a YouTube rabbit hole and found this

AIBU to think it was so much more entertaining than reality crap now?!

My mate went on it 🤣
They were told what to wear and what to say !
All set up

Chamomileteaplease · 29/04/2023 10:52

Blind Date was great at the time but don't you remember things like:

The picker would choose perhaps the objectively least attractive one and the audience would go "oh no" or if they picked the fat one the audience would just laugh.

I mean it could be pretty cruel. I wonder how the "less desirable" ones felt afterwards 😞.

BeardieWeirdie · 01/05/2023 18:01

I need the follow-up show to see what happened, love the accountant!
The advert break was interesting too - the slim fast woman saying how “massive” she was before at maybe a 14-16. Slim fast, if it still exists, would be cancelled for body shaming now.

I know what you mean but I think people were a bit more self deprecating back then. They weren’t encouraged to see themselves as being ‘picked on’, they were all just there to have a laugh. And the women gave as good as they got - I remember one episode where the man made an unflattering remark to him and she brutally took him down!

TeamSpike · 01/05/2023 18:23

Came on to say don't forget about The Crystal Maze! Peak entertainment

RedToothBrush · 01/05/2023 18:30

Yes I remember the time my boyfriend went on it!!!

The episide I remember is where the couple picked a survival camp as their holiday (remember the choice of the 3 envelopes?) & they had to eat fish eyes.

And yes You Bet was amazing too, that should definitely come back. The one that sticks in my mind was someone who could identify any Beatles tune just by looking at one bar of manuscript. Such a good show.

I only discovered this year that it was the same choice in all three envelopes.

wombridgewalkabout · 01/05/2023 18:33

Yes! Loved it! One of my friends was on it!

What?! Well thats blown my mind. I've been feeling sorry for that couple for 30 years. Poor them, surviving in the wild was always destined for them.

Yes I remember the time my boyfriend went on it!!!

Not when you were dating him I hope!

nomoredrivingytu · 01/05/2023 18:37

I do, but I hated it!

McSlowburn · 01/05/2023 18:48

I LOVED it - favourite show ever I think!!

One of the producers used to drink in the pub I worked in and signed me up to be a 'Picker' on the show, but I pulled out the day before filming as I was so nervous!

Also, I remember Cilla announcing that the next picker was from my home city and me wondering aloud if I'd know him, and it was the guy I'd lost my virginity to!!

feellikeanalien · 01/05/2023 18:53

I loved it. Always felt really sorry for the ones who got the crap destinations for their dates.

I wonder if the couple who got married as a result of meeting on it are still together. I can't remember their names but it was all over the papers at the time.

There was another programme I can't remember the name of. Don't think it was a Saturday night but there were two families and they each booked a holiday and the other family had to go with them. Some of them hated it and used to refuse to do activities. Some of them hated each other by the end of it!

Ooooh yes I remember that show.

Normally a stereotypically working class holiday on the south of Spain where everyone drank loads and did Kareoke while the snobby middle class family mostly stood outside, arms folded, rolling their eyes. Then week 2 would be cycling in the French alps where the 1st family flat out refused to participate.

One of my favourite episodes was where one family went to Vegas to renew their vows dressed as Elvis (I think) and the other family had to be witnesses and cringed the whole way through it.

The saddest episode was where a family took a really unfit family on an activity holiday - probably to the French Alps - and they all refused to participate except for the chubby 10 year old who had the time of his life doing all these activities he'd never been on before.

Was it called Holiday Showdown?? I might need to rewatch a few episodes just for nostalgia now!

I was dating him!!

TBF we stayed friends for 20 years.

It was amusing even at the time.

He made a right twat of himself!

I know! When you think about it then it makes sense. They had to have everything booked for all the crew, planned, insured etc.

SmugglersHaunt · 01/05/2023 20:00

I know someone who went on it and went on the date. She said it was great fun

NooNakedJacuzziness · 01/05/2023 20:12

We used to love 3-2-1 with the impenetrable clues. Used to hope there were no Claires on Blind Date otherwise Cilla would do her professional scouser bit "her name's Clurrr and she's from Berkshurrr"

I'm about to make your day, jacuzzi
Name changed for this, obviously. My dad's techie mate edited the episodes so it's only my segments but I did pull one of the "pickees" on the second show when I came back to do the sofa chat Blush maybe I should do an AMA

JMSA · 01/05/2023 20:31

dontputitthere · 23/02/2023 00:00

Worked on it

Cilla was loathed by everyone.

My mate described her as the devil in a trouser suit

The destinations were pre determined. They had help with writing the 'witty' shit

But oh god Cilla was a nightmare.

Whenever you read 'vile celebrity' posts on here - especially past ones - Cilla ALWAYS pops up. Like, without fail. A bit like James Corden these days Grin

OurClurfromBristol · 01/05/2023 20:34

She was utterly lovely to me but I was only 20 and nervous! I was nervous but she put me at ease and said "auntie Cilla will look after you" with a twinkle in her eye

NooNakedJacuzziness · 01/05/2023 20:42

That's amazing clever clever Clurr! What a lovely memory to have. Maybe poor old Cilla gets a bad rap! Haven't watched it all yet but you don't seem nervous at all, what a fun thing to have under your belt ☺️

LookItsMeAgain · 01/05/2023 20:52

Comedian Ed Byrne was on it! I'd forgotten about that.

So was Jenni Falconer.

I’ve yet to hear anyone with a good thing to say about her.
I think someone once posted a link to a thread on a cabin crew forum just about what a cow she was in first class.

CurlsandCurves · 01/05/2023 20:57

Remember the first Blind Date wedding?

No idea if there were any more after that but the original couple still do interviews about it every now and then.
