Fell down a YouTube rabbit hole and found this

AIBU to think it was so much more entertaining than reality crap now?!

Decades ago I worked with somebody a couple of years younger than me who had a successful pairing on Blind Date (prob late 80's). They did the date a month or more before it went to air. I can't remember whether I knew about 'the date' before filming or in the run up to it being aired.

Life was different then, so the couple weren't hassled by the press/social media. I don't think that their paths would have crossed without the TV programme.

threesenoughthanks · 23/02/2023 00:23

@uhOhOP that's funny the You Bet one that I always remember was the bloke who recognised cars blindfolded and listening to their door slam shut 😁

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/02/2023 00:28

There are several full episodes of You Bet on YouTube (which is very nearly an anagram of You Bet Grin)

That irritating, cringey little rap they did still resonates with me in a bad way, even though I can't properly remember it. Something like:

What you gonna get on it? YOU BET!
How you gonna bet on it? YOU BET!
So don't fret, get set, are you ready? YOU BET!

Passivhaus · 23/02/2023 00:29

I'm overly invested in the accountant from Edinburgh and how his date went now

While on the topic of older tv programmes can anyone remember the moment of truth, i think it was called. Family member used to get a challenge like remember all 500 kids names in a school and if they did it would win a prize. The few people ive mentioned it to look at me like ive grown another head.

There are plenty of episodes on YouTube to keep you entertained of the Moment of Truth.

I loved that programme as a young child. :)

BashfulClam · 23/02/2023 00:34

A senior guy I worked with had been on it. He was a sexist guy who loved himself. He was good looking and knew it, he said they shagged all holiday then he just ignored her afterwards. He went on it for the free holiday and opportunity for sex. Really sleazy, just like him he was vile.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/02/2023 00:40

I've just looked at a clip of The Moment of Truth on YouTube. That one completely passed me by. The opening credits are so cheap and 90s. Clip Art come to life!

They just can't make shows like this anymore. I was a young teen in the 90s and Saturday nights were just fab - family fortunes, Blind Date, Gladiators, You Bet, Stars in their Eyes!

Great shows. Gladiators (“ready”) and You Bet, I barely missed an episode of either. Noel’s House Party was another cracking show. Loved the “wait till I get you home” segment.

Baywatch earlier in the day was great (and before that A-Team).

Early morning Going Live, Timmy Mallet (Way wackaday).

TV was stacked then.

Aphrathestorm · 23/02/2023 00:50

Loved my 90s Saturday evenings.

@uhOhOP

I'd love it if they still had Wolf and the Scottish umpire

www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/take-part/gladiators

Shut the front fucking door!!

for me I want it to be just like the 90s one… remember when they started jazzing it up and americanising it as it came near the end of the run? It just wasn’t as good

I want all the old games, the costumes, staging —- the lot!

people will love it.

Nedmund · 23/02/2023 00:55

I'd love to see Blind Date (someone like Graham Norton or Maya Jama with actual personalities to host, not the usual Ant & Dec/Stephen Mulhern/Rylan hosts) and also Gladiators come back.

We need more family TV that works for everyone. Masked Singer just about worked for us. Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway is so cringe, I won't put myself through it.

CallieQ · 23/02/2023 00:55

Loved Blind date

On Moment Of Truth though it was quite cruel because they had all the presents behind a wall and the kids got to run to them if Mum or Dad won and had to Sadface at what they didn't win

I'm sure it ended because there were complaints it was cruel!

Ahh yes. Remember that one. Just watched the opening on YouTube and the theme is definitely familiar.

Another show from around then was Man o Man (Chris Tarrant presented it). They shoved fellas into the pool iirc.

Another brief show was Ice Warriors (Dani Behr presented it). Contestants jumping over stuff on ice skates. Bloody dangerous it was.

IamSuperTired · 29/04/2023 10:03

I loved it! Actually auditioned for it when I was 18! (Don't think I was either interesting or good looking enough!! as didn't make it onto the show!)

Coffeeandbourbons · 29/04/2023 10:11

‘I’m not an accountant, I’m Indiana Jones in the temple of debit’ Grin

So much more entertaining than the bleached teeth, fake tanned Ken dolls that are everywhere now!

I didn’t realise you had to audition!

CurlewKate · 29/04/2023 10:23

Ah Adam and Joe. Where are you when I need you?

wildinthecountry · 29/04/2023 10:24

jeffgoldblum · 29/04/2023 10:31

Loved blind date! , my favourite was the lady who wanted to choose graham!

KimberleyClark · 29/04/2023 10:32

Anyone remember those shows where they were casting for a musical being produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber?

Coffeeandbourbons · 29/04/2023 10:34

do you mean how do you solve a problem like Maria?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 29/04/2023 10:41

“It’s Blind-ah Date-ah”

Yes those shows. I remember Jessie Buckley was on I’ll Do Anything, for the part of Nancy, and she was just so fake. Every time her name was called out as having gone through to the next round she’d do this fake bewilderment act staring at the presenter, with her hands up to her face, until having to be led away to join the other Nancys. Every bloody week exactly the same. I have disliked her ever since. Thank god she didn’t win.
